Title: Arrow selection and draw weight
Post by: WhiskeyTango on December 26, 2009, 12:47:00 PM
Hi, I have a new Dwyer Dauntless 90# at 28" on the way and this will be the heaviest bow in my collection.  I have been using nothing but carbons with my compounds and POC for my re-curves and long bows.  I have been out of the trad shooting for some time so my question is this, whit this new bow would you all recommend carbon with weight tube or POC (possibly some other wood?)

I would recommend wood for any bow, but I'm kinda ate up like that.  It will likely take some looking to find POC that will give you good arrow weight; you can get more with fir or some of the hardwoods.  How long are you drawing it?

I have ordered some 23/64, 90-95 spine POC from 3rivers along with some 160gr points. I am a little concerned that the total arrow weight will not be in the 8-10gr per pound.  My draw length is 29 3/4 with my compounds.  I have yet to measure it with my trad bows but i would guess 28 1/2 to 29.  Also i have a half a doz Grizzly Stick Safaris with a total arrow weight of 770 that i will be trying out (I have not been impressed with them so far but my other bows might not be high enough # for the Safaris).
One last question... Where is a good place to buy wood shafts? I am looking for a good variety of wood types with heavy spines
Thanks for the help.

Wow, you must be young. I don't think they make an arrow that heavy, do they? Man I'd be looking for some 1" Bamboo garden stakes.
Give Tim a call at Braveheart Archery a call.
He's a good man to deal with and if he doesn't have it, he will send you in the right direction.

Lol at the bamboo. I'm 28 (sill old enough to know better than to have a 90lb longbow). I'll give Tim a call, looks like I might have to go with carbon+weights   :(    Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I'm very glad I found this site, hope I can help others in the future.
