Title: suggestions on how to fix
Post by: Earl Jeff on December 26, 2009, 12:21:00 PM
I posted this on the bowyer fourm got some good feed back and am greatful but it was limited maybe some one on pow wow can give some suggestions I purchased a homemade Hickory bow from e-bay and as you can see the tiller is way out the bottom limb is weak other wise the bow is pretty nice it is stoutly built but only 50 to 55# @ 30 inches. 72" long. my question is what can I do to bring the weight back up after I weaken the upper limb to correct the tiller problem. can I shorten the bow and or back it with something to increase its weight again. Also the bow seen to take a slight set after strung and shot for a while, I would appreciate any help Thanks.   (http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss115/earljeff/hickorybow004.jpg) (http://i567.photobucket.com/albums/ss115/earljeff/hickorybow015.jpg)

Yep.  Backing the bow with something like sinew or shortening it a couple of inches will increase the weight.  However, given your long draw length, shortening probably isn't a good idea.  Also, if the lower limb already has a hinge in it, sort of an angle not a curve, where it bends coming off the riser, it means the lower limb has been overstressed and will likely break before too long.  Regarding the string follow, almost all wood bows follow the string an inch or two or more.  Sorry the prognosis couldn't be more positive.

Thanks Jerry I don't think there is a hinge in the lower limb but I'll go slow thanks for the info.

The only way to gain poundage with out cutting it off is to sinnew. Then retriller it.Alone once set is in your bow it's there. But sinewing it can take it out if you ad enough.
