With all the talk of wool clothing lately, I made my first purchase from Fred and Teresa this past week! Now, I'm wondering what you guys and gals have on your noggins, what do ya wear when its COLD out..... post a pic if ya have any!
When your bald outside and empty inside the warmest and wind ressistant has to be it.Wool seems to be the answer for me!!

When its real cold, I wear this.
Being hair challenged, I need more head covering then most. During cold weather I use/wear two or three at the same time. I have and use the following: KOM bomber (the warmest), Gray Wolf Bomber (I use this one the most), wool watch caps, fleece balaclava's (made by my wife), wool/synthetic ski Balaclava's (full head but open faced), neck gaiters, and scarf's (Silk). I mix and match combinations of these as the weather dictates. One note, both the KOM and GW bomber are large enough to fit over the other head coverings and are insulated wind stops. The biggest drawback with this setup's is the loss/decrease of hearing but I'd rather be warm and deaf then cold and able to hear.
If I'm moving around, say bunny hunting or still hunting, I go with a wool watch cap. If I'm stand hunting, I pull a Fratzke knit hat over that (I like the camo pattern.). When the wind is really howling, I remove the Fratzke and wear a hood. On stand during cold weather, I also usually wear a neck gaiter or scarf.
BLAZE Orange, Knitted Store-Bought Beanie!! I would LOVE to have a "Mad Bomber" Hat!! :campfire: :archer:
Stormy Kromer..Really nice and warm

Polypro pullover, wool hat, and 2 handwarmers tucked into the neck area.
Ball caps, a Noggintop fedora, Under Armor beanie, knit beanie...I like hats!
Stan
I usually wear this or a brown wool one like it. Sometimes a fleece beanie too

Heck, all I have is a regular old full face toboggan that is reversible from camo to blaze orange. It works well, all except for making my head itch!
Fleece face mask and a fleece hood/gator over it.Wool on my head makes my hair hurt...LOL
wool boggin in the winter, light cotton boonie in the heat.
KOM wool hat, or under armor hats
KOM or my Gray wolf bomber hats.

... but I just got an incredibly silly looking Mad Bomber hat for Christmas that's going to get some action. :-D
When it's not super cold, my wool felt fedora...

Effanem crusher or a Swanndri beanie. Ballcap in the warm months.
GingivitisKahn On another post someone said they cut a small hole in the ear flap a sewed around it so you can hear better with them down.
Stormy Kromer
Here is my go to cold weather hat. It's from Gray Wolf Woolens and is by far the warnest I have found.

For stand hunting in really cold weather I have found a fleece face mask with a wool watch cap over to be very warm. In medium cold on stand just a wool watch cap.
Either a Kromer or an OD watch cap.
WalMart had knit wool caps on sale for $5 each a few years ago. I picked up three.
Mike Mitten recently brought up a great point about wearing multiple hats (layering). As much time as I have spent outdoors layering and dressing properly I feel really dumb for not thinking of that myself :banghead: . Thanks Mike, better late than never.
This morning it was my firstlite balacavala, smartwool watch cap and mad bomber rabbit fur hat. Usually it is the balacavala and Dayone wool ski cap. Wish I could find a wool bonnie in ASAT.

On the hood or the mad bomber or what? I'm not cutting any flaps in my fedora. :D
When it's COLD, I grab my KOM Bomber or a double layer wool balaclava with a brim. Both are very warm.
I wore a headnet in the warmer months but will most likely switch to a felt fedora or stetson of some kind with a bandana next year.
I sport a cammo fleece hood with facemask in the winter. If I get a little too warm I can pull the hood part down and where the mask like a bandana.
I wear a ballcap sometimes too.
I wear a bandana when it warm out.and a fleece cap when it starts getting cold out.
I have left a long trail of hats and caps while out hunting. I figure 10,000,000 birds have been raised in wool lined nests I have supplied the material for.
In hot weather; I wear a baseball cap; and put it on backwards to shoot. I have an anchor that does not allow for hat rims.
When its cold; a wool watchcap is about the best thing going for me.
When its bitter cold; a fleece balaclava and the watchcap.
If I am putting down the miles; I overheat; and the cap goes in my pocket.
Then birds; squirrels; weeds- whatever it is that steals my caps - ( maybe the wild relative of the sock monster): goes to work.
Cheaper for me to have a couple watchcaps in a zipped up pocket just in case...

Hey GK, whats that hood attached to, looks like some decent wool?
Cold for us is zero and below, lots below. I wear a homemade windbloc fleece hood with an opening big enough for my eyes. Sometimes I put a ball cap on top of it or a wool cap if it's really cold.

That's a Ron La Clair heavyweight hood in a heavyweight longhunter shirt. In that pic, I'm also wearing a Filson vest over the whole thing. I think it's good wool (but what do I know :p ) and the price is very reasonable.
Thanks brother, looks toasty warm!!
I have two stormy kromers one original and one rancher, the rancher style is very, very warm.
I love my fleese hats thats all I wear when its cold boony when its warm. Widow
I wear a polypro balaclava. Very toasty.
I ALWAYS wear my Cabelas Camoskinz head wrap, when it's warmer I use my short bill ball cap but when it gets colder I use a German surplus hat I got from Sportsman Warehouse. I got two for 9.95 and payed 9.95 in shipping typical for them though. I love this hat, it's OD green, got a short soft brim and ear flaps that can be velcroed up or pulled down under your chin to cover your entire head minus your face. I cut big ear holes for on my bowhunting hat and run super glue around the cut whole. The extra one I use for trapping, snow blowing etc never bothered to cut the ear holes out on. Works for me great hat. I always thought someone could make this and sell to bowhunters would make a killing!
I wear a Cabela's polar fleece balaclava, the one that you can adjust to go over your mouth, or just the chin. I then have a pair of wraparound tinted safety glasses on a strap that then go around my glasses. Keeps me from getting glare headaches off the snow and keeps my glasses dry. I look like a Soviet fighter pilot, but I like it.
I have a filson wool hat with fold down ear flaps that is pretty decent for warmth, but doesn't hug close to my ears and neck. After seeing Mr. Mitten wear nit hats and also Don Thomas. That's also my go too, sometimes I wear 2 wool nit hat if it gets real cold. There also real easy to pack.
cool - stormy kromer
cold - grey wolf wool radar cap
really cold - KOM Bomber
When its super cold.. say teens/single digits with winds... I wear one or two fleece hoods depending on the amount of chill.
Milder cold I wear my Kromer or just a boonie hat and bandanna around the neck to cover the neck (part not covered by beard or jacket).
May have to look into one of those heavyweight longhunter shirts... they look like the bees knees for cold weather.
Not to cold - fleece stocking cap.
Cold November - lightweight camo balaclava with camo stocking cap
Cold December stand hunt - add a camo fleece balaclava over the two hats worn in November.
Layering makes it easy to adjust to wind/no wind, walking to stand/walking out, etc.
I love my Stormy Kromer Rancher. My head hasn't been cold since I bought it.
Stormy Kromer short bill. When it's real cold I wear a balcava under the SK.
