Title: North Carolina Public Land
Post by: xroadshunter on December 22, 2009, 03:24:00 PM
Heading to Piney Creek NC at the end of the week and was wondering if there is any public land near there that I can sneak away for an afternoon hunt or two.

Not sure about that area, but check out the maps on  http://www.ncwildlife.org/

The game lands maps can be downloaded to pdf. Good luck, I'm in the Northwestern region and our season ended on the 19th. Post some pics if you have any luck.

George,
I'm not sure if your talking about the Piney Creek community of Ashe County (aka God's Country), but I think there are two game lands, Three Top mountain and Cherokee.  Check the maps on the site Tim listed.  Getting around could still be an issue, as I think they got hammered with snow.  I'd love to be "stranded" at the hunting shack up there right now!

Far rider thanks for the link I'll check it out today.

Olddog Piney Creek is in Aleganey County just northwest of Sparta.

Hey Terry I hope to get out at least one afternoon while we are up there.  Freddy has been working pretty hard with his new job and hasn't been shooting much.  He has also been helping me on weekends to make some extra $.  I almost headed back to Ray's the weekend of the 12th, but a job came up and had to postpone the trip.  We were at the site this past Saturday and Sunday from 6:00am and I didn't pull into my driveway until 12:00 midnight.  Work is work and I'll take it anyway i can right now.

Merry Christmas to you guys and have a great new year.  George

My mistake,  I was thinking about Grassy Creek which is another 25 miles or so up the road on the New River North Fork.

George,
If you are north of Sparta, then you are in driving distance of Thurmond Chatam, which is a super good spot to hunt. Not only lots of deer, but lots of BIG deer. Hwy 18 is one way to access, it fills the left side of the road as you drop over the Eastern Contennental divide. We used to hunt it. It is a huge game land and I believe there are a few access point off of the Parkway, which I believe would be A or B sections. Talked with a biologist a fews years ago and he was convinced the next state record would come out of the back side of that section, nearest the parkway. That area is difficult to get to and most the pressure comes from the Wilksboro side off of the little dirt road that cuts across from Hwy 18 to hwy 21. Good luck, check the regs though, that area may be over for the year!

Ashe and Allegany is my neck of the woods. Just about anywhere you go has some serious deer problems. Drive carefully when your up the mountain. Our season closed last Saturday and I saw nine on our property tonight. With  3-4 gone this season , I did not even put a dent in them around the farm.

I am going to try and make back to Ray's in the spring if possible/openings...would love to put a turkey/hog hunt together. Tell Freddy to get back to shooting....otherwise he may revert back to the training wheels....LOL

Hey man, i live in Ashe hunted both game lands. Low deer population, real hard to concentrate activity. but with the foot of snow on the ground you may can track one. best of luck to ya all the same!!
