Title: camo face paint....any one use it?
Post by: ozy clint on December 21, 2009, 11:05:00 PM
do you use it? do you prefer it to a mask? using a mask seems to interfere with my anchor so i'm wondering about camo face paint. on the week end i was hunting water buffulo and i swear my face was giving me away to these well sighted creatures.

Use to use it a lot, actually liked using it because there was nothing to interfere with my shooting. Only drawback was having to remove it. No real problem just inconvenient. Started using Spandoflage masks in the 80's and have been using them ever since. Don't even know for sure if they still make them, I bought up a supply in the early 90's that will keep me good probably for another 20 years. Have every color they made, ready for any type of cover.

I use the camo paint when I cannot find my spandoflage face mask. The paint does not interfere with shooting but the mask is a good compromise. A lot easier to remove then the paint.

I've thought about it.  With my pasty white complexion it would probably do well.  I just like the convenience of using a mesh facemask that can be taken off quickly.

I used the spandoflage net from 3 Rivers this year and really liked it a lot. To me it seems to have all the advantages of paint/cork without all the messy clean up and I don't have to worry about it messing with my anchor or catching my string when I release like a head net can. On cold days it even keeps my face a bit warmer.

I use it when it's early season or warm and I like the Larry Jones face camo. He sold his call company a few years ago but the new owners still carry it and were a pleasure to deal with.   www.jonescalls.com (http://www.jonescalls.com)

I picked it because it was easy to get off with baby wipes and did not shine like some of the other brands.

I mainly use the Halloween makeup from Wal-Mart. Cheap and does the job. When they clearance it the day after Halloween I stock up. The worst I have used is the military stuff in the little compact case. It takes forever to get off!

CARBO MASK......good stuff, washes off easily with plain water.

Used to use a mask......have never used nor plan on using face paint.  Not to say it doesn't work....its just something that never worked its way into my "setup".

I feel it falls into that "other" category....along with scentloc suits, scent-killing sprays, etc.

I use the hunter's specialties paint.  It works great and comes off easy with baby wipes.  only problems I have with it is it's messy when first applies, and it does sweat off, but down here, it's 95 degrees when we're deer hunting so I'm almost always sweating buckets.  I just reapply when I get to my stand and cooled (as much as can be) off.

Well once again, most other folks support the economy better than I do 8^).  I have a wine bottle cork that I carry in my coat pocket.  That, in conjunction with the Bic lighter that I carry in the other coat pocket, creates an environmentally-friendly face cover;  it hides the shine from cheek apples, chin and forehead...even those expressive ears 8^)....and it's cheap, just like me.

Oh yes, one cork, if not lost, will last years, much longer than the wine that it sealed.

I used camo face paint and it was a pian to get off.Went to a spandoflage mask and it fits tight and blocks alittle wind too. I can feel my anchor point very easily.

Love paint!!!!
It almost feels like a ceremony before heading into the woods. Painting the face has been done for thousands of years and it's cool to carry it on.

Carbon mask.  Absorbs the funk of a seven day hunt but comes off easy as it gets.  May try a cork, but like the carbonmask.  Got mine from a ghillie suit site.

I also like the CARBO MASK it will even come off with ice water.I tried the burned cork but it was a little harder to take off and I have to go through a guard shack to sign in and out. I would use the burned cork if I didn't have to deal with the public as much.

Same here Arwin, I tried the masks, but I don't like anything over my ears, guess I'm a freak like that, and wearing glasses doesn't help either!

When u r 8+ miles from the truck you take one of some, and none of most!  It absorbs the oils on my face that takes a bbunch of wipes otherwise

The burnt part of cork is carbon.  I don't smell it right next to my nose, but perhaps I'm odor-challenged.  It's been used for a few centuries, in both hunting and war.  One could say it's.....traditional.

I'm sure burnt cork would be least of my worries regarding odor.  You probably absorbed more odor from your car seat than you ever could overcome with some face black.    :saywhat:

I've been using the same homemade mask I made out of deer skin 40 years ago.  I cut the eye holes large to see when I turn my head to shoot and cut out the mouth area so I can grab my anchor to shoot.  It's held on by two thin deer skin thongs.  Basically it just breaks up my white face into a darkish mottled blob.  I can post a pic if you'd like but I've never seen myself in it so it may be scary even to me.

During the 60's, 70's and early 80's just about every bowhunter you met had it on and it was socially accepted.  Sometime after that it seemed to draw more public attention if you stopped to get gas or snacks.  I finally got tired of being stared at and switched to a face mask.

I use it, don't like the feel of a face net.   And it helps cover up my ugly (with this face, I could scare away critters).   Also, I feel like it is part of my prehunt ritual.

I use it extensively, as I use the back of the feather as a secondary anchor.  Gets a little tiresome to remove it.

While hunting in Missouri earlier this week, I forgot to take it off before retiring for bed at my cabin one night.  My buddies had a good laugh the next morning!   :biglaugh:

I started doing the cork thing back when I was in the Army...ever try and scrub off government issue camo-stick? After a week in the bush that stuff is like a tattoo. Cork comes off easy, I like it.

I have also started using a cheap cotton camo mask, which I like quite a bit, especially for turkey's. The mask doesn't bother my shooting at all (very thin)

I started using face paint a few seasons ago, I am convinced it works. This season I called in a bull elk to five yards. He had swung around to get my wind, where I had no cover. I was facing him and trying to be as still as I could, he was looking right through me. Never once did he see me. I'm sure he thought that weird thing wasn't next to that tree yesterday, but he never spooked. After that I will always use the stuff.

I can't shoot with a mask so paint is my only option.  As fart as getting it off My wife has the wipes for taking off makup and with two of them and one minute I'm clean as a whistle and the wipes have no smell that I can tell.

I always wear facepaint. After many years as a "grunt" in the infantry, it is second nature.
First thing on, last thing off.
No problem getting it off, buy the "makeup" remover wipes" or dawn dish soap, or even baby wipes. A few minutes of scrubbing is no big deal, especially if it gives you confidence.
I hate a baggy screen hanging around my face and head.
And I like what Arwin said!

I used when I was about 12. Then graduated to spandoflage and now nothing. I think the last straw for camo paint was some USMC issue that took a wire wheel to get it off. I wore enough of it after on government time.  ;)

Haven't used it for years.  Mostly I'm out in open country that's fairly light.  Seldom in a tree.  I think the dark face paint actually makes you more likely to get caught in these circumstances.

Same with most of the camos.  You just look like a pounded thumb out there in dark camo.

"The worst I have used is the military stuff in the little compact case. It takes forever to get off!"

Thats exactly the reason that I use it.  I don't have to worry about it sweating away.  I learned this the hard way while training in Okinawa.  The stuff in tubes stinks, and it comes off way to easy.

We are blessed with a very long season in SC and I start with a bit of face-paint, just a few vertical lines of carbon stuff to block the shiny cheeks and forehead. Use a Thermocell for the skeeters and I can hear well with nothing over my ears. Now it is relatively cold (27 F this morning, cold for us) and I wear a face-covering balaclava that I cut ear-holes in and can slip off the nose cover if I need to draw and touch the cock feather to my nose which is my method of double anchor along with thumb nuckle on the ear lobe. Worked real well last evening when I got a mega-doe at last shooting light. And my face stayed warm, warm the whole time. So, I use various methods but always use something to cover my face (and hands). I kind of like it when the deer look right in your eyes but don't alert. 'Course I'd rather they not look right in your eyes, but now with the leaves off, it is likely to happen!

Started with the military face paint 35 yrs ago.  Had to use cold cream to get it off.  One application lasted for days, except what came off on the pillow case at night. ha
Still use face paint - just feels right, like the indians going to war or a hunt.
Only problem I have had is during a hot day, the blow flies want to land on the paint.  Don't forget to put some on your bow hand. My bow is camo painted but my hand really shows up without camo paint.  Put some on with your camo clothes and stand in the forest and have someone take a photo. You will be suprised.  Only movement will give you away.
Fun coming up with different patterns to put on your face and different colors.
Had some on with my camo clothes, stopped at a filling station for gas.  The girl thought we were robbing the place.

I always use it.  I agree with Arwin that it is part of the ceremony before heading into the woods.  I usually paint the same pattern on my face similar to indian war paint.  I also put some on my bow hand if its warm enough to hunt without gloves.  (Its got to be pretty cold for me to put a glove on my bow hand).  I don't understand all the people saying they are too cheap.  A $2 Hunters Specialties paint kit will last a long time even if you use it all the time.  You don't need to use much.
