Title: ? for you Silvertip Owners
Post by: jamed on December 21, 2009, 10:13:00 PM
Currently searching for a used Silvertip and have a question about bow length vs. draw length.

I would prefer a 58" bow, but see the recomendation is 60" for a 28" draw.  Do any of you TIP owners have any issues drawing the 58" bow to 28 and beyond?

All help is appreciated.

Rusty

I think KentuckyTJ shoots a 58" Schafer but I don't know what his draw length is. Might PM him and ask him. I have a 60" and 62" and a 28" draw. I would not be at all concerned about shooting a 58" with my 28" draw however.

Got one on the way (a 58" bow and the previous owner drew 29" without problems).

I draw 28", and I have 2 Schafers that are 58"'s....no problems at all.

the schafers are real smooth and have no trouble handling longer draws w/ shorter length bows. 58" or 60" would be more a matter of personal preference.

dave will send you a 58 or a 60" bow to try too

Just keep in mind that all 58" bows produce the same string angle (and finger pinch) at 28" draw...assuming they have normal riser configuration and hand placement/brace height.

In theory at least, a variety of 58" x 55# bows will feel the same to the string hand/arm at full draw. Some guys can shoot the shorter bows with better results. My hunting pal shoots a 58" recurve for deer currently, and he's completely deadly with it. Me...I have meat hooks for hands and don't believe a 58" would feel that good. I know I could kill game with it, but would shoot a longer bow somewhat more accurately and comfortably.

The try before you buy advice is very sound.

My two are 60" and 27" draw length. Both super smooth. I wouldnt worry about the length vs. draw length. Go with Daves advice, he definately wouldn't steer you wrong. Trying before you buy is always good too.

The Silvertip has a relatively short riser so the long limbs make the bow easy and smooth also for longer draws.I don't have any Shafer but at my 29" DL don't have any problem to use very short bow 52" and less.

My 58" Silvertip is smooth as silk and I love it! I don't think you would mind the length, but like posted above, try a 60" and and 58" and see what you think.

Yep I have a 58" Tip but only draw 27". I can tell you though my brother of the bow (LoweBow) has a 29" draw and has shot my Tip and will tell you he has felt absolutely no stack. You will be fine with your 28" draw.

Only thing you may or may not notice going with a shorter riser if you have never shot one before will be a shorter site window.

X2 What Kevin said. I love my Shafer, but I shoot a 62 inch for comfort reasons.

I shoot a 58" 'Tip and have for the past 5 or 6 years. It has been my go to recurve, at least until my Tall Tines recurve arrives which is 58" also. I have a 29" draw and have had absolutely no problems with the bow length being an issue. If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact me at (434) 444-3111.

I too have a couple of 58" Tips. Great for tree-stand hunting. I have also done quite a bit of stump shooting with them and trad archery shoots. Very comfortable at my 28" draw. I will say that I also enjoyed my 62" Silvertip that had quite a bit more draw weight to it. I think if I were to Elk hunt out west, I would carry a 62" bow walking through the mountains. Hunting Whitetails here in Michigan, I would prefer my 58 or 60" tips.

I failed to mention I recently acquired a 58" 1 piece Silvertip curve. It has moved to the top of the go to list for hunting. It is smooth on the draw and throws and arrow like a 90mph fast ball! I am thinning out a few of my Silvertip t/d curves in favor of finding a 60" 1 piece Tip curve just to compare against the 58"   :)   If you get a chance, give a 1 piece Silvertip curve a fair shake, I think you will like it!

I have a 28" draw and have owned 5 Tips. One of these was a 58" bow and I did not care for it. It just felt too short. I own a 60" and a 62" and find them much smoother. I really like the 60" and find it funny that 2" can feel so different. If it were me I would definately buy a 60" bow if you pull 28". jmo

Having shot 58", 60", and 62" Silvertips. I would lean toward the 60" bow personally. I have a 28" draw and liked the 60" bow. I know it might not be possible but it would be ideal to shoot the different lengths to see what feels the best for you.

I've always shot 60" Schafers....just a personal thing I guess, I draw 27".  I always thought the medium riser just looked the best

Good info here guys, I have been shooting a 60" silvertip and thought about going to a 58", hopefully be a little easier out of a treestand, without dropping accuracy.

I always shot 62" recurves untill I tried  a 58 " schafer. tried the 3 pc and the one pc and came to prefer the one pc, I have a couple of 58's and 60's  and I draw 29" and don't notice any loss of smoothness with the 58"er's. Hard to go wrong with a schafer but if you do there's plenty of people willing to take it off your hands  :bigsmyl:    good luck     Tony

I have both 58" and 60" Schafers and have a 28" draw...I prefer the 60". The 58" is plenty smooth but I like the longer sight window on the 60" bow for shooting off a rest.

I have two 58" Silvertips, and I draw a little over 28". Most of the bowyers recommend draws under 28" for 58" bows. I believe if the bow is well made it won't matter. Schafers are the best. I shoot 65# and there is no finger pince or stacking.

I have owned an awful lot of schafers over the last 20+ years and I agree with Tim 60" will feel just a little smoother. I have three now 2 are 60" and one is 58"  and almost always I shoot the 60".  You can't go wrong with a Schafer.

Good luck,

Thanks for the responses.  Don't see many 60"ers for sale (compaired to the 58".  Mostly stand use for whitetails, so the shorter seems to be better.  Don't think the site window will make much difference coming from a 12" riser Fedora.

Thanks Again, and great to know such a wealth of knowledge is available here!!!

Now to find that "perfect Tip"

Ditto what Warden609 said.  I bought a 60" and draw 28" on a good day.

As been said , the sight window on a 60 is a little longer and I like it better than a 58.

For tree stand a 60 is great. I could see a 58 for a ground blind.

LOVE the looks of the 60.JMHO

I would go with the 60" one. It has a longer sight window,is a little smoother, and the one inch longer on each end should not be a problem. Bob

Terry,

I agree with a lot of what is being said here.  You won't find your answer written in these responses.  You'll have to decide for yourself by getting your hands on 58" and 60" bow.  Even then, you'll still be uncertain.  Both have their advantages.  You'll eventually own one of each anyway, so don't sweat it  :) .  This is the one of those things you'll debate for as long as you shoot a bow. I have a 60" & 62" Tip.  I draw a recurve 29" and shoot both lengths well, but with my big hands and wide fingers, will always side with the longer bow for real  shooting comfort.  58" will work just fine for your 28" draw, then you'll shoot a 60" bow and say, "wow, that's much easier and more pleasant to shoot"!  I have also shot the 58" Silvertips and love them, they are sweet!  There are so many variables though, you have to compare apples to apples. Draw weight has a lot to do with it as well.  The heavier the draw, the more you'll appreciate a longer bow.  Short "heavy" bows can be miserable to shoot.  Longer bows shoot nicer for all day events, stump shooting, etc.  Longer bows hold a little more stable, hence tend to be more accurate for the shooter (not always).  Having said all this, I preferred my 60" Tip over my 62" Tip this past fall.  Short bows definitely carry nice and are a dream in tree stands and ground blinds.  You want the 58", that's what you should get...we're splitting hairs here anyway, either length would be appropriate for you!   Call if you would like to talk more about it  (608) 798-1103.

Good luck,

Kris
