Title: Deer season is over, now what?
Post by: far rider on December 20, 2009, 12:16:00 AM
Just wondered what you guys have planned now that most of the fall big game seasons are drawing to a close. Whitetail in my area ended today, empty handed for the season, looking for more adventure!

Once season ends here me and my buddy ususally start seriously hunting crows. One of my favorite things we actually took our recurves last year and shot at a flock of a couple hundred crows as they flew to bed. My Beagle is getting anxious ill have to take him out for rabbits and see if I cant get some with my longbow. Ahh I love winter

While the deer are all still in the state of mind hunting season puts them in I would get out and start "hunting" escape routes. IMO understanding their escape routes is paramount. It gives you an advantage when trailing sparse blood. Also it gives you a better idea where they are going when you jump a few stillhunting, possibly leaving you with the right info to cut them off and set up for a shot on the "one that got away."
I'm always learning something new about the local deer whenever I get out and "study" their current escape routes.
This is also a good time to sharpen tracking skills. The more you do it the better you become.
For me even though the season is over I always try to put a positive spin on everything so I just see it as next season's hunt has just begun.   :)

Rich that thing looks yummy!  Nice Bow!

Small game, stumps, basement shooting after work.  If your resourceful the season never ends.  I might be trying Ice fishing/target practice on the ice this year.

I'm looking forward to felling a few wabbits with fellow TG'ers.

Well I hate too mention it, but we have PIGS!!!  Have 3 different ranches that are good too go as soon as deer season is over.  They want us to thin the herd on the pigs and we intend to help some by exercising them plenty.

Nows the time to kill a bunch of stumps while you roam you deer hunting property. Absorb all the sign you can find and file it away for next year.

What you find this year, that appears again next year is important stuff.

We have one more month of whitetail season here and two more for cottontails.  After that - coyotes and groundhogs are always in.

This summer, I'm going to try to do a better job getting my fly line wet though.  Whitetail hunting is my passion but fly fishing is just too much fun to neglect.

I saw a lot of deer in range this year but never got one broadside so I didn't even take a shot. I am going to try some slightly different stand placement next year to get those broadside shots. So, I will spend some time in the deer woods looking to make some slight changes in stand placement. I'll hunt antler shed in the winter too.

I will also get out about once a week with my Brittany to go quail hunting with my side-by-side shotgun. That's fun and quail is good to eat.

Than there will be a spring bow hunting trip for hogs. The shooting practice for that will keep me pretty occupied until I go.

Then a few 3-D shoots over the summer and fall will be here again.

You guys further north must have bunnies on a different cycle than down here........I have seen a grand total of one......one....this year!  And that was walking back from a treestand this fall.  We saw none this year around the yard or garden, when we are usually overrun with the critters.  Got to be some sort of down cycle.  Either that or the raptors are really having a field day with them......it's just of opposite with squirrels.....have not seen this many in many, many years.  Mother Nature hard at work!!!

Regardless, like everyone recommends....small game and stumps (but small game is lots more fun and delicious to boot).

Our season isn't over until the end of Feb.  Anyone like to come hunt Arkansas I'd be happy to take you to some of the public land I hunt.

43 degrees outside right now and that's about right for this time of year.

Even for those who don't fancy themselves as writers, I can tell you most state bowhunting associations are in dire need of stories for their newsletters, successful or otherwise.  You can help make those state editors' jobs easier by penning something and attaching a few photos and sending it off to them.  Don't worry that you're not Hemmingway (or Don Thomas, etc.); most editors are used to cleaning them up a bit.

We have a archery shop that sets up a 3D shoot beging January they have 15 targets 10 to 40 yards three days for the wheels and 15 targets 10 to 25 yards for us one day twice around for about three months . Always a good time to hear all the storys from that season !!

Deer season never ends, only harvest dates do. Post season is the best time to scout. If you bump deer now, it's no big deal.
You can find the heaviest travel area's, slip into bedding area's, look for sheds, etc.
This is also a great time to start planning and building natural ground blinds. If you cut pines to use for blind material, they slide nice on snow.
It's also chainsaw/deer habitat improvement season. You can do hinge cuts and create some great bedding area's out of otherwise poor habitat.
And as always, practice shooting and hit the occasional sport show. A great trad bow expo is in Kalamazoo Michigan in late Jan.
Anyone within a few hours drive should go. Here's the info...

I'm hunting deer up here in Dutchess and Putnam Co. 'til Tuesday sunset, then off to Westchester 'til December 31st, then I go to Jersey the whole month of January. There's nothing like Winter bowhunting in the snow and the cold, still hunting mountain laurel ridges up high and frozen swamps down low.
And this year, for the first time ever, I've decided to try killing a coyote with my longbow. I spent all day today studying their track and routes in the snow. I got 'til March 28th to kill one.
We are just gettin' waaaarmed up!

Coyotes are possible, bunnies not so much. Squirrels definitely, ducks and geese are not. Turkey in the spring. Thinking about a western state wild boar, they're in until the end of Feb. By then spring should be just around the corner, and I hope a good turkey hunt! Thanks guys. I do some stumping and scouting, those are givens, just wondered what everybody had planned. Enjoy, and have a Merry Christmas and a super New Year!

Since I haven't killed a deer yet this year I'll take out my muzzleloader for our flintlock season starting the day after Christmas. (I have to admit I like the smole-pole almost as much as my bow).  If I get one, I'll take the longbow back out (have two unfilled tags).

Build another bow.  Build one for my daughter. Start tying some flies for next fishing season.

Well deer season is over on the 31st so hopefully I will still score for the season. Then on Jan 10th I head to Fl with a few buddies for our annual hog hunt. When we get back our archery club outdoor 3D snowflake league starts up where we brave the weather but have a game menu lunch each week. I'm making venison chilli again thisyear for the 2nd shoot. When that is over in early March I'm all set to do some scouting and stump shooting waiting for the whittingham NJ shoot and turkey season.

Deer season never closes,, For about 3 months I can actually shoot them, but the hunt goes on 365 days a year.
Great time to walk your area and read the trails that are not as evident without the snow. Soon it will be shed season.
