Any one seen this new movie yet? My family and I
went yesterday to see it and I was surprised to
see a "Traditional Bowhunting" part in it.
I think they did a good job two thumbs up.
Was someone actually bowhunting in it, or just shooting a trad looking bow?
Guru, Yes they were bowhunting in it.
BTW, Do you know why my reply message box is so short or how to fix it thanks.

i think yer talking about the 'quick reply' box that's shown below all the posts in any thread.
if you click on 'full reply form' you'll get essentially the same reply box window but with all the added features.
all reply windows can accept as much text as you wish to type.
Ok I get it now thanks Rob.
While I have not seen it yet, I'm anxious to see the the bows in it, strangely enough our local post office ladies son did most of the animation for that movie as well!
I was told it cost 500 million to make !!!
That's Crazy !!! 1/2 a BILLION Dollars !!!
I've got a headache..........
I liked the movie, it relates bowhunting with the love for nature
In the movie you can see that he shoots a deer and then she says a prayer and says it was a clean kill, then she says that the meat will provide meat for them
Sounds like I need to put this one on my important things to do list. Thanks for sharing with us.
God bless,Mudd
Amazing, a movie that doesn't make hunters look bad. I wonder how they slipped that by the PETA nuts.
Might have to check this out. Most of the time it seems that what pass for normal values in my world are very under represented in Hollywood.
from a preview, one shot show it may be a prescot (sp) style bow.. I may be wrong tho.
Good flick. The bows are cool looking. The stone broadheads looked awesome.
I will have to see it. Had no idea about the bowhunting.

I went and saw it yesterday with my 12 yr old boy and my girlfriends 14 yr old girl. Excellent movie and portrays the respect for nature that I try to show others. That is one that I would see at the theater again!!!! The hunting scene was cool and a prayer for the "deer" was great. Talked to the kids about that on the 2 hr drive home. Definately not the typical hollywood message when it comes to the hunt scene.
I can't wait to see it looks great. Widow
This movie is definatly on my Must see list. Guess I may take the kids sometime this week.
Brian
I have seen it in the 3D-Version
what film, what for unbelievable pictures
Markus
i haven't seen the flick yet, but definitely will at the local imax theater.
the previews show the 10' tall humanoids holding at full draw what appear to be stickbows, using a reverse 'inside out' asian style of string grip, similar to using a horn ring. for that style of string grip, the arrow needs to be on the opposite side of the bow's riser. oh well, it's all 'made up' science fiction, anyhoo.
it does appear the film has a good message, and that it treats hunting in a spiritual light indicative of the american indian. kudos for that.
a 'must see' flick, for sure!
I saw it at IMAX this week.Being a big Sci-fi fan and loveing bows it was a no brainer. :) The artwork in the movie was excellent. With the long draw those aliens have penitration should be a none issue with those hoe handle length arrows. :biglaugh:
Best movie I have seen in awhile.
$500,000,000 to make? Well then, they only need to sell 50,000,000 tickets to break even, before the merchandising. lol
Helen and I saw it in 3D. We thought it was a good movie, their arrows were huge.
Saw it this past weekend great movie great hunting seen all around an awsome movie, I may have to go and see it again.
I wanted to see it when I saw the trailer, but I'm a little worried now. I heard that they do not portray our military in the best light and (of course) they all are (or sound like) Americans. If I go, I will be taking my three godchildren with me in tow - their father is a Marine Major. I really don't want to brainwash the kids with any thinnly veiled Hollywood tripe metaphors about the wars in the middle east.
You guys that saw it - whatcha think? Did you take that away from it?
Ya we watched it the other day in 3D, and when the bowhunting scene came up, I leaned over to my Bro-in-Law and said "look Brad, spot 'n' stalk bowhunting, this movie keeps getting better and better"...
As Arctic Archer said, not a typical hollywood message when it comes to the hunt scene.
Oh and I believe the points on their arrows were knapped!
Tom - Maybe one of our sponsors will start selling "avatar" bows and we all will need one :-)
Sounds like a BIG SCREEN "Go-See"!! I have seen the Commercials and it looks awsome!! Its like "Star Wars", when Seen on TV its good, but when on the BIG Screen its AMAZING!! :archer:
So far 3 of my kids and I have seen it. They have taken friends a cousins to it as well. The got back again last night late from seeing it. I was already in bed so didn't get the report again. I will have to call in a while to see how they felt about it again.
I didn't feel like they portrayed our military in a bad light. They may have portrayed the mercenaries in a bad light through. You should see it to make your decision.
Call me a prude, but there was one scene that didn't add to the movie. They could have cut it a little closer and not left anything out of the movie.
The bowhunting and connection of all things in nature was a cool theme. One that reflects very much how I feel about the hunt and the habitat I hunt in.
Have a MERRY CHRISTMAS!
All you southpaws should like it since all the shooters were lefties, huh?
It could have been named, "Dances With Wolves Meets Star Wars."
BTW, the hunting sequence was only a few seconds and I too felt it had a strong anti-military message which is typical of Hollywood.
Still, it was a visual treat and worth seeing.
The movie made 73,000,000 the first weekend in ticket sales, only 427,000,00 more and there in the green :)
Wy wife and I are going to see it tonight.
Saw it last night and enjoyed it very much. Lots of similarity with native american culture: the respect for nature and game. Imagery is second to none. You'll want to see it twice!
Hmmm, seems as though there are some mixed reviews as to how our military is portrayed.
Since that's the case I will not give them one red cent to help them get out of debt on this one. Sorry.
Robert
Former military here and as far as Im concerned this was no reflection on the military as we would know it. The "Marines" portrayed in this film were not our Marine Corps as they were hired out to a private company as mercenaries. I do feel the choice to use the word Marine was unfortunate but the portrayal of hunting and especially trad archery and the connection to nature was a welcome surprise. All in all I would say the movie is worth seeing.
While the Marines were in fact mercs in the movie, they did get a lot of the attitude correct. I actually enjoyed that it was closer to spot on than most movies as far as Marines go. I'm a former Marine. The guy yelling "get some" while shooting the door gun was perfect. The Col. wanted to fight. That's what Marines do. The main character even states that they are fighting for different reasons in the beginning of the movie.
I really enjoyed the bowhunting scene as well. I've recently got into trad. My girl leaned over and whispered to me, "I bet you loved that part." I really liked the movie.
Well I won't spend a dime on it either! (Because someone gave us free passes!)
If you get a chance to see the "making of", watch it. Very interesting new technology......this movie is not animation in the traditional sense.
The actually used a variation of live action, that was then adapted. Very unique. The facial expressions that you see on the actors in the movie are the actual facial expressions of the actors as they were filmed.
In the "making of" they discussed having to teach the actors how to ride horses and archery. There is a short scene where several are being instructed with traditional equipment.
yes we just saw it in I-MAX 3-D it was an awesome action flick. I want to try that backwards two finger release!
Avatar is one of the greatest movies ever. The kids and I have seen it twice already. I think the hunting scene although short was well filmed considering Hollywood did it. And I agree with Rascals post the Marines were hired merc's.And although they were pretty bad I think the real bad guys were the CEO's of the mining corporation.
I'm going to see it. It sounds great. As far as how it portrays "our military", I understand in the movie it is the year 2154: Not "our" military anymore by then, LOL! Really, it's a movie. You know, fiction.
We went last night, WOW!! Great special effects. My wife love it !!
We give it two thumbs up
My family and I are going tonight to see it in Imax/3D. The reviews posted in thread makes me pretty excited to see it. Thanks all.
Java Man
We saw it today. All I can say is it is one of the best movies I have ever seen. I have never gone to see a movie twice at any movie theater, but I would this one. It was that good!
AWESOME flick, i tried painting my wife blue afterwards but she had none of it!
I am former Army and served in Iraq. While the warriors were merc's they definitely referenced Marines. Having fought overseas, and knowing how soldiers act. I also gotta agree witht he earlier post that the door gunner shouting get some is exactly what happens when a 19 year old packing a machine gun is in a full blown fire fight. We all talked tough and a whole lot of smack. It is part of being a soldier or Marine. It is how you cope with the stress, adrenaline, and testosterone that is pumping at 110%.
As for portraying coporate greed, military type agression, and mankinds tendency to take what they want, the movie was fairly close to exactly how we as a people, our government, and military treated the Native Americans in our country 100 + years ago. The actions portrayed in this movie are happening all over the world today. Look to Africa or South America for some really good examples.
I have the ability to differentiate between good and bad, so do kids. I am taking mine to see it here soon. I believe that kids can see the movie, and having a conversation with them about reality and fiction will help them see the movie as just what it is, fiction.
I did not see any ties to Iraq, Afgghanistan, or the war on terror. If that was the movies intent then they failed horribly. I did see some very close ties to how we as a nation treated the indigenous peoples of North America.
The bowhunting and fighting scenes were awesome. I liked the way the showed how the natives honored their kills and thanked them for providing sustenance to the people.
With those super long arrows, and massively long stone heads, I bet their arrows weigh 2,500 grains and have a 30% EFOC! No Problem with penetration! Definately a must see in my book
I haven't seen the movie yet but a female archer I know says she did the spots on the lead alien woman's face when she worked at a graphics company a couple years ago. She didn't know what the movie was at that time.
She also saw that same female actor at the local archery range getting lessons.

That's exactly my concern. Haven't seen it yet (probably will tho) but I'm anticipating a US = warmongers = bad sort of metaphor.
I enjoyed the film very much. It certainly was a retelling of what happened to Native Americans, and what happens whenever an arrogant culture decides to take what they want from an indigenous people. That is not a strictly American behavior. There are many example throughout history of other cultures doing the same thing, and cultures within cultures being greedy and murderous to their own members.
One aspect of the story that I really liked was the fact that the Na'vi people prevailed, with stone age culture going up against cutting edge military. When that helicopter was brought down with an arrow through the cockpit I nearly jumped out of my seat!

My feelings exactly !!!
Too my son to see it today, thumbs up! Special effects were amazing, and the story was great too. Worth the coin to see it on the big screen.
Took the wife, 19 yr old and his g/friend last nite...
As a former Marine, I did not like the Eagle ,Globe and Anchor being on the lead character's t-shirt. It, IMO; relays the
anti-USMC hollywood mindset.
Other than that, beautiful colors. Wonderful effects and critters. Very much a version of American Natives(Wes Studi portrays the Chief).
To me; it was typical, anti-corporate,
bash the warrior, hold hands and sing the coke song, love story.
The archery and respect of nature was great!
Personally, I'm glad I saw it, it was eye candy and entertaining. Would not pay for a second viewing. Will watch the 2d/HD version at home though, when it's available.
I saw it and
God bless,Mudd

Seems to me the this happens routinely throughout the history of mankind. Why "Americans" are always called out is beyond me. Read history, some tribe or group is nearly always taking someone elses "stuff", be it land, food, women, whatever.
This is very likely not even relegated to being a "human" issue either. Every couple years the big buck or bull is beaten down by an arrogant newcomer who wants the ladies.
It is nature, like it or not.
ChuckC
my family and i saw the movie and thought the special effects and the action was awesome. I like how the portrayed the connection between the hunters(avatar) and nature and the bond we really all have reguardless if we realize it or not. The things we do on a day to day basis really do matter to all the inhabitants of our planet.
Sounds like it might need to be my first trip to the "picture show" in many years.

A good movie, as to being anti military, I suppose it depends on viewpoint.
In this case, the movie was about invasion and conquest for corporate greed.
The soldiers were mercenaries.
To obey orders blindly, is not something I would like to think any soldier should do.
I dont like to think any thinking person would be at ease with how the native American peoples were treated by the US military in history.
If we cant watch a movie with a similar theme, and see "thats just wrong" we havent really made any progress in the last 150 years.
We saw it in IMAX 3D...$15.50 each...it was amazing!!!
I went to it - the archery seen in the previews got me to go. I liked the spiritual view of an interconnected ecosystem and reverence for game and non game animals killed.
The archers had good form and shot ELB or primative African style selfbows, two fletch natural yellow/black feathers and extra long arrows - again similar to some African or South American tribal arrows. Clan head person bow was R/D with lumpy (horn or bamboo?) nodes. As others mentioned they did have an unusual string grip - so did Ishi.
Portrayal of military not that flattering, but then Apocalypse Now was not that nice to the army either and the archery scene was a lot shorter. Fortunately no politics is allowed on this site so we don't have to go there.
I plan to go back and see it again maybe even in an I-max.
Isn't going to be in town this week either. Guess we'll just have to drive 90 miles over to Grand Forks to see it today (and stop in at Cabelas to pick up some shafts, and get a good meal...).
How Outback, just keep repeating, "it's only a movie, it's only as movie"... :D I live 7 miles from a major reservation, how things went and still go between whites & NA's aren't so black & white as you seem to believe...
I am proud to announce that one of my former graphic design students, Allen Hemberger, was one of the CG supervisers on the film Avatar. Allen works for Weta in New Zealand and has created special effects for a number of other films , including King Kong, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and two of the Matrix films. Not bad for a boy from Kentucky!
Just got back from the movie and I'm ready to grab the bow and mount a bird---------------Now that didn't come out right.
Allen also worked on XMen, Fantastic 4, and Ladykillers. He did a lot of the Skull Island water effects in King Kong. His team won an Academy Award for that film. I'm going to find out which scenes he worked on in Avatar.
i googled the cost to make it.james camaron says 230 mil (he should know)the ny post claims 500 mil (how the hell would they know) just another case of the media talkin out thier a**** because thier mouths know better? who knows.good movie though i went and watched it.good trad scenes.cool looking bows.

Lol - man, does that paint a weird visual image.
