Awhile ago I bought a 16 strand string for a 55lb recurve that the deal eventually fell through on.

As luck would have it a friend aquired a recurve the same length, but @ 41lbs.

So the 16 strand is a little on the beefy side for a 41lb bow don't you think?

If thats the case, why can't I clip out a couple of stands, if I'm careful.

Or am I just poking a hornets nest??

A little beefy yes. Two strands would not make a noticeable difference in performance, though. The way to reduce it would be to take it apart, remove the two strands, and rebuild it. Might as well make a new one, 12 strands.

I would, given that maybe I do not have the wherewithal to build a string, just go ahead and use the string I have until I learned how to make a string. Make sure that the nocks on the arrows are big enough to accommodate the string without binding.

For the cost of a couple of strings, you can buy Chad's video "Doin' the Twist", and learn how to make your own strings. Start with B-50 Dacron to keep the costs down and soon you will be able to make all your strings exactly how you want them.

You can if you clip the same strands on both ends,unless you take the serving off and untwist the string so you can be sure to cut the same strands.This would be on a flemish twist,you can't do this on an endless loop.It would be easier to get another string.For 41# I would use a 12 strand dacron if it is a dacron string.

Well, if you are up to it, you can dismantle the string and make two 8 strand strings from it.If not,you can do as jry309 suggested.

Live with two extra strands...or order a new string.

Don't take a chance cutting it.

Clipping strands is a great way to ruin the string entirely.

I suggest making a new string. If its b-50 use 9strands padded to 15. If its 8125 or another fastflight use 6 padded to 15.

Thanks everyone. I can live with it until my buddy decides to get a proper string for it. Looks like "string craft" is in my future though. I liked the sound of " ... soon you will be able to make all your strings exactly how you want them."

Don't cut it have one made...I know that's easy for me to say!

I tell you what is worse than that...I made one up this morning for an order and while I was trimming the tag ends I cut a strand.  :banghead:    It was a beautiful Brown/Yellow 10 strand BCY 8125 padded to 16...I even had it double served already.  I had to leave the room for a while!

Yup...I'd have to go along with the consensus. At best, it might work with a Flemish string if you remove the serving first, but definitely not advisable with an endless string.

Personally, I often find the matter somewhat difficult to comprehend when bowstrings and arrows enter the equation. A bow is useless without either, and I view a spare string as a necessity...much like the quantity of arrows I choose to carry to fit the occasion (...never understood ½ dozen purchases, either).

For all that people are willing to invest in a bow, shorting oneself the experience of using it to the fullest just simply fails to compute. IMO, after acquiring a bow, strings and arrows are not luxury items, they are necessities. Who would buy a rifle and try to get by on 6 bullets?

I don't think it would be worth the effort. The string may be a little overbuilt for that bow, but it's usable. I think removing 2-4 strands would be a pain.

For the cost of a string, get what you really want and you will be happier with it. Heck, buying lunch out during the week can cost more than a new B50 string. Whatever you do, enjoy that bow and shoot lots of arrows and wear that string out so you need a new one. Happy Holidays to all!
