Post by: vanishing point on December 17, 2009, 11:28:00 AM
Hi gang.I am looking for advice?I will be going deer hunting on public land.I want to hunt from the ground.I am wondering if i should wear a leaf suit or a ground blind? What would be a better choice ? If i wear a leaf suit do you suggest sitting on a chair still? Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

From my experience, deer are fine with pop up blinds as long as they are left out for a period time. I wouldn't recommend hunting from one the day it wwas set out.

Since you are hunting from public land, I'll assume this would not be possible. I would go with the suit and maybe try to get in a few weeks before the season starts and set up some natural sources for your blind. And yes, I would recommend using a chair.

I've used the asat 3-d leafy suit for 15 years and its amazing how well it works, I carry it in a day pack and put it on when I get to my stand to keep it from getting torn up, I don't have any experience with the ground blinds but I won't hunt without that asat, hope that helped some     Tony

I wear an ASAT leafy suit all the time and have hunted on the ground with a good back drop and have had good luck.  I also use a chair and kick back and relax.  Later in the season, you can usually see quite a ways.  If I see a deer coming, I wait until it goes behind a tree and ease up to a standing position...and go from there.  When I was younger I could sit for hours in a dead fall or whatever.  Now I need a chair with a back rest.  Hope this helps.

Leafy suits are great as are ghillies. Be sure you have a comfortable seat so you can sit still, a pair of hand pruners to clear lanes and a small hand rake to clear the ground around your feet. If you like to hang your bow put one or two screw in hooks in your pocket or pack to hang or lean your bow on. Shooting a deer  on the ground is way cooler than from a treestand but is a lot more challenging and rewarding, IMO.

I prefer the laefy suit or ghillie rather than a ground blind if possible for any conditions

I am also a big fan of the ASAT leafy suit - it has proven to me that it does work!

I my self would go with the ground blind. Gives you more concelment to move around and keeps wind off of you a little to.

Use the leafy/ghillie,but carry a pair of pruning shears and utilize natural cover also......
