Well got to tinkering with the skinny string I built a couple weeks ago again tonight.
Got to the serving part, trying to find something I have that will make a nice, (not lumpy like my last attempt) serving.
Not sure if anyone else has tried it...but I hand served mono onto the string and then served spectra over it. 12lb mono with the tag left long to add to the thickness, with .026 serving seems to like 5/16ths nocks....I'll keep ya posted if the mono squashes down.
Doing testing the spectra didnt slip on the mono...it actually held great.
Anyone else try this?
ok made a slight adjustment....was originally using the .021 not the .026 like I had thought.
Found that a smaller mono serving underneath left a smoother transition between the 8 strand dyna and the double served section...so I went with 8lb mono served 3.5"es and .026 diamond back serving. (the .21 is 62 braid if you're wondering). I did not extend the tag end long enough that my nock would be on this portion being it'll be too tight.
The smaller poundage mono is much easier to hand serve then the heavier poundages as I sorely found out. What a pain. The 8 was pretty easy, as was the 10 and 12lb.
A pair of hemostats comes in handy when you want to clip the tag end on the jam knot to keep it from unraveling. Just like in fly tying, clip the standing line witht hemo's and let the weight of the hemo's keep the serving from unwinding while you're trying to cut the tag end.
For what it's worth I've also noticed that 5/16ths classic nocks are slightly looser on the string the 11/32nds. So if you're shooting 11/32nds you'll have to adjust accordingly.
The serving is definatly smooth, no lumps or snakes underneath. Thought it might help someone whose tinkering with them like I am...also saves some of the serving.
Lastly make sure on the inline whip finish (your finishing knot), you do sufficient turns to keep it from coming undone (on both ends). I went 20 wraps for the final knot and things help up fine..originally it was coming apart with 10.
When I serve my 8 strand D97 and my 6 strand 450+,I serve with No 62 .018 first and then serve with No 62 .021 over the area where my nock fits and long enough for my fingers. This combow gives me around a .108 diameter which fits great for my 3D Super nocks and G-nocks.
only reason I tinkered with the mono was local supply...there isnt much around when you need it. So far it's working well, and being an xfishing guide, I have quite a bit of mono on hand ;)
I used to use mono serving all the time years ago.I liked that I could see the flemish twist with clear mono.
Yeas, mono is nice, on my fishing reel! If it works for you that's great, you know how to make a string and can oversee the use and fix any problems.
For the average archer who doesn't, I won't, because of the unforseen use. But I do understand using what's at hand!
Hemistats are a third hand. I take a file to the teeth, so not to have fraying problems, when clamping.
Good shootin, Steve.
Sorry Steve, I should have mentioned they had no teeth for the first 2/3rds of the end.
As for strings, it's just serving, you dont need no jigs just a serving tool. This could be applied to any string that you have that's too loose. Doing a serving is very simple.
Just thought I'd pass the tip along lol.
