Title: South Carolina archery businesses
Post by: stanman on December 14, 2009, 10:00:00 AM
I live in Columbia, SC and want to know where the nearest traditional archery businesses are located.  I need some place that sells wood arrowmaking material and long bow related supplies. some places claim they are traditional but sell mostly wheel and pulley archery stuff.

If I lived in Columbia, I would be the biggest pest around Jeffery Archery, especially if Owen is there.  Can you just imagine the history locked up in his head.

You know stanman, Owen was head designer for Bear Archery during the Super Kodiak and Custom Kodiak era, from about 1967 into the early to mid 70's.

Most of Dan Quillian's bows were made by Jeffery. Dan loved to debate bow design with Owen. Dan considered Owen and son Tom to be the best. The only reason he used other bowyers was because Jeffery couldn't handle the volume after a certain point.

I lived in Columbia for several years, George, and was unusual for two days to pass when I wasn't hanging out at Owen's. And you are right, it was a great ongoing history lesson. I left there in '89 and Owen and Tom were about the only things I missed. Lots of good stories and great times. Stanman, having said all that, you may be able to buy some longbow supplies, like strings, etc. at Jeffery but you'll probably have to look to mail order for wooden arrow building supplies unless things have really changed.  Grant
