A fat doe got a haircut.
I spent the weekend hunting with Basinboy in the Atchafalaya Basin, he hooked me up with a good stand this morning, overlooking a beaten trail. He dropped me off before sunrise and I didn't see much action until about 0845 when 2 does came in from the left, noses to the ground. The lead doe looked to be pretty mature while the second one looked to be a bit younger.
The lead doe passed right in front of my stand not even 10 yds out. All I could think was ' Holy sh@%, this is it right here, this doe is going on a boat ride'. I drew back, anchored in, picked my spot, and let her fly. Let's just say I must have had deer fever pretty bad. It all happened too fast. The arrow went clear over her back, she jumped the string, and I realized I should have aimed a little lower to compensate for it.
It kills me because I know if only I could relive that moment, that'd be one dead deer. Just one more chance at her. But that's how we learn I guess. BB came to get me a little after 10 and found hair on the ground where the doe was.
Next time...
They came through here

And the lead doe passed in front of me here, my clean arrow buried in the brush

Hang in there Leo.
Are you going to Tensas in January?
Billy
That is a great looking spot!
Hey Leo,
I just got my 1st kill last week....and 2 days ago,I had an experience earily similar to yours, but I was on the ground....missed a doe from 10 measely yards.....she was standing broadside but looking straight at me.......my arrow went barely over her back. I actually woke up in my sleep last night knowing if I had the shot to do all over again, there is no way I would miss. What I did wrong was forgot to pick a spoty when I shot. It happened so fast and I was so pumped up that I just shot at the middle part of the silhouette. Next time I will pick an exact spot....maybe you did the same. At any rate, you hang in there like I am doing up here in NY....your 1st kill is coming, because we all learn from these experiences...
Leo congrats on the close call.
Ahaaaaa close calls probably will not be your last sad to say.Did you have to hold on to the tree after, still can replay it it in your mind, mad at yourself don't ask me how I know but bet you get one soon.
The look on his face when I picked him up. I looked at where his arrow was and looked back at Leo in the stand and all he could do was smile!
I know the feeling. If we could just hit the rewind button and do it again. lol
Looks like more rain for our hunt tomorrow Leo.
Suit up, can't kill 'em on the couch! lol
Been there, Done that, might even have been the president of that club for some time. LOL
It will all come together and be even sweeter. Hang in there Leo!
Hang in there Leo... I smell backstraps in your near future!
