Anyone set any goals for 2010?
It's kind of a tradition for my family to set goals for the next year around the Thanksgiving table. The subject came up on an elk forum so I thought I'd throw it out and see what some of your goals are related to hunting. Here are mine.
First, foremost, and unfortunately the hardest to know how to approach is getting my fire back for hunting.
In conjunction with that this is what I plan on working at:
1)Primary: Secure an elk hunt either through the draws, landowner tag, or OTC. In the event I draw something like a sheep, goat, or moose tag the elk will become secondary. And, to kill an elk!
2)Physical fitness. To get in the best shape of my life. To increase strength, stamina, and to get to an acceptable BMI level. Compete in an Xterra.
3)Gear. To continue on my quest to acheive the lightest yet highest quality gear and master it.
4)Accuracy. 100% at 35 yards with my recurve.
5)Calls. To go from sufficient to great.
There it is. Let's see where we can get by next September!
I have been waiting six years for a turkey tag here in Utah. Now they switched the hunt to an over the counter purchase so I really want a gobbler. I have purchased archery elk tags for the for ten years and have only killed one cow with a compound, so elk are on my list as well. Good luck to you.
Talking about bowhunting: to dwarf Chuck Adams world records and animal harvested.LOL
I have always been a goal setting type.
My fun goal for 2010 is to visit as many 3d events as possible and have some fun. For about 7 years I attended as Sipsey River vendor and worked my tail off. I enjoyed it, but it was a lot of work. In 2009 I sold out to Big Jim and had planned to go to the events for fun, but I had two operations and that really slowed me down. I missed a lot of events. Not much fun in 2009.
This coming year, I will be attending a couple of events as a "Hot Shower" vendor, but most I plan to attend for fun and shooting only. My goal is to punch some holes in the foam!
Goals-
Moose tag for VT
Learn knapping. :goldtooth:
Settle on a wood shaft for this years' hunting use.
- spend more time learning about tuning and working on bow/arrow setup
- move up in bow weight and see how I like it
- hunt more often
- get proficient enough w/ recurve to compete in the 900 round held by peacock archery each labor day wknd in belton tx. shoot a bunch of 3d courses.
- hunt and kill a free ranging Goat/Sheep (that was a 2009 goal that went unmet)
- tag out on white tailed deer (thats 5 deer...got close this year but dont think I will tag out by the time work ramps up Jan 1)
Simply put I would like to shoot a deer. Any deer, doesn't matter to me. 2010 will be my tenth year hunting so I figure my first big game bow kill would be a good way to celebrate it.
Take my first elk after several years of trying. I will be hunting in WY, CO, or ID. Will see how the draws play out.
Continue to learn the public hunting areas near my home. I just moved here a year ago and I am chalking this year up to a "learning season".
Take more than one whitetail in a year with a bow. May seem like a greedy goal to some but it is something I would like to do.
If I accomplish half of this I will have had a good year, but you have to aim high.
Nathan
My goal for the upcoming year is to increase my effective range to a solid 25 yards. I am currently comfortable to about 20, but that next 5 yards seems like a long ways.
Mine are to be a better husband, father and of course Hunter, learn from my mistakes and those of others and be humble and get wisdom from those who know more than me.And pass it all onto my children for they are our future and they are gonna need all of our help!
100% at 30 yards.
First trad deer kill.
Shoot, hunt, have fun, shoot, have fun, hunt, hunt, hunt, and may be have some fun!!! I would also like to become the master of some of the longbows I have. Oh yea....have fun and hunt!!! Maybe a bear or elk hunt would be good also!
spend more time in the bush chasing sambar ...get fit ...hunt for elk in the USA ... teach my dad to shoot his longbow that i bought for him ... stump shoot more ... take time to take some " newbies " out bush, hunting and shooting longbows ... whack a lot of rabbits [ all missed this year !!! ] and in general be nice and understanding of my fellow man .
ben

Since i just got divorced, find a young blond whos family owns a bunch of land full of big bucks and millions in the bank. :biglaugh: Just kidding, to become more familier with my bows since i just started shooting trad and to become the best person i can become.
This may actually belong on the trail cam thread but I got a pic of a really big doe in '06.
I had a chance at her last year but....well...it's one of those long stories...she won the contest.
I hadn't seen her this season while hunting or on my trial cam. But last nite she showed up. She is my goal for 2010. And no, she is not a buck that has shed its antlers.

Wow! Looks more like a small cow. Big deer.
My goals are to start making all my own trad equipment, bow, arra's, maybe a quiver, and strings...
Good lord thats a big dang doe.
I would like to shoot a buck with a selfbow,Improve my shooting and hunting skills, and harass the local smallmouth population.Hopefully help some friends make some bows.Glen
Hunt more for sure. Have done very little this year due to work. Stock pile more hunting and camping gear. become a better longbow shooter.
Shoot a deer, turkey, and coyote. With trad of course.
Pure and simple. Shoot more often and spend more time huntin' in 2010.
Shoot alot, shoot some more, take a spring turkey, maybe a rabbit on the run if that's still happening, do a little bowfishing, spend more time shooting with/against some of the folks on this site, see some friends in the nearby green mountain state, check out one of the big trad events in the region, win the Muzzy....the list goes on...
Am returning to south TX to get revenge on a hog and a javelina (elusive little suckers aint they?). Week long trip. Last time we went I was still shooting a wheelie bow...so really looking forward to this trip. Hopefully harvest my first black bear in September during a week trip to Canada with trad gear to boot. Either way it will be 2 awesome weeks in the wilderness.
1. Rio Grande turkey with my TallTines.
2. Get back into "sheep shape"
3. Have a safe and successful hunt with my buddy Chimaster in the wilderness of Prince of Wales Island next September stalking black bears and blacktails.
1-shoot my recurve solely and become accurate out to 25 yards consistantly
2-harvest a turkey with my bow this spring
3-harvest a deer with my bow this next fall
4-take a deer out of a groundblind
5-shoot some 3-d rounds with my recurve
6-join the local trad bow 3-d league
when i say "bow" i mean recurve bow. all of the above pertain to my trad goals.
I have one goal in 2010: Kill a backcountry bull elk and get it all on video.
Tule Elk tag in my home State CA
Antelope tag in NV
Mule Deer in CA,NV.OR
Blacktail in CA,OR
and if I am real Lucky California Big Horn Tag.
Water buffalo, Giraffe with longbow
Get more accurate at 30 to 50 yards.
1. Become one with my new pronghorn 2. Get Greywolf shooting out to 40 yards 3. Get in shape for hunting Elk trip next August. 5. Line up Bait for Bear hunt in September. 6. Find a straight route to New York for Oct hunt with Adkmountainman. 7. Find a cheap place to hunt Bison. 8. Keep healthy.
Okay, here's a lofty goal for sure: to win the IBO Traditional World Championship! :biglaugh:
Well, maybe just to attend the shoot, anyway. Now that's not too high a goal, surely.
to make it to 2011 with bow in hand!
take a kid hunting
kill 3 groundhogs with recurve
hit 10 out of ten quarters in air
get archery in schools involved in trad equipment
learn how to knap a sharp arrowhead
First trad elk. I'd be just as happy to call them in for my partner. I like talking to them as much as shooting them.
To become more proficient shooting left handed. Past few years I have been practicing to become a "switch hitter". One of my hunting buddies is left handed and I'm gonna ask to borrow his one piece Fedora. I would like to take a deer this year lefty....
Mines pretty simple and the same every year.I hope to have fun and make it to the next hunting season. :)
I think I am going to design and build a new hunting bow this year.Build a couple of them and get rid of every other bow I own.Might just shoot the same bow the rest of my life or at least for a whole hunting season. ;)
1-To stay healthy. (I just had hernia repair surgery last week)
2-To use my canoe and bow together more.
3-To introduce my daughter to her fathers other love.(bowhunting)
my only goal is to learn how to shoot a trad bow and take a deer with it this next fall. if I dont learn to shoot it as well as I'd like though I'll be hunting with the compound again.
If you find he Joe see if she has a sister and shoot me an e-mail :D
1. elk hunt, first one is planed for august/september 2010
2. Lose another 30 pounds, this is for the elk hunt. Already lost 25.
3. Put some more hogs in the freezer, love that hog hunting
4. Im even thinking of deer hunting for the first time in 20 some odd years, might get a mulie tag to go with the elk.
5. Last but not least, get my hunting bow set up and leave it alone, i have a big problem with tinkering and it never fails,it always messes me up.
Eatin' hogs is tough on losin' weight 8^). Good luck to you wtpops.
I wan't to stay healthy; buy my lifetime Pa. hunting license; and find a Custom Kodiak at a flea market with a $50.00 tag on it 8^).
Well, I'm with George on the weight thing, and doing well so far... losing slow but down from 210 to 188 and aiming to try to hit 180 by summer.
Other than that, I have winter bow building goals. I plan to explore the wonders of take down bows. I'm currently building my first one, Connexion hinge, then I want to try a glass sleeve bow and then my first three piece. New techniques to learn.
I'm stuck right now... a record low 17 degree day in Seattle and no heat in the shop. The bow is all laid up and ground to a blank, and I've done a practice installation of the hinge on an old riser from a broken bow, but can't get back at it till the temp gets up to at least 40.
(If anyone is interested in the hinge thing, I webbed the practice installation as a "hinge-a-long":
http://oldpharttsarchery.com/bowbuilding/connexionhinge/connexionhinge.html )
The purpose of playing with the take downs is to have bows that can fly with me. Having hunted once, man, I want to do it again! I'd like to get two javies next year, and maybe try hogs.
Naturally, as many 3D's as I can get to, starting with Moses Lake.
This was a great year. I can only hope the Good Lord lets me have another like it.
Just shoot and HUNT...
Kill a really nice buck like the ones my friend Steel routinely shoots in OK! I am the DINK king.
Buck all it takes is being at the right place at the right time, correct moon phase, correct temp, right barametric pressure, perfect rut timing, focusing on the right food source at that time, catching the buck in a relaxed state, forget it maybe just hunt where there is a big buck and hope you get lucky! I think for my 2010 goal I would like harvest a Bobcat with my Trad bow I missed one last Dec this year maybe it will be my time.
i would really like to go and hunt winter tahr and chamios.
a donkey and another water buffulo.
shoot something with a stone point i knapped myself.
just get stuck into it really.
this year has been a real lean year for me hunting wise. the 1st six months were spent in canada where i couldn't go hunting, now i'm in arnhemland (aboriginal land) where it is really hard to get permission to go hunting.
Get my health back to hunt the Grayling,Mi area ONE MORE TIME.....
Get surgery on my right hip or do PT to get it usable
Lose some #'s and get in better shape
Spend more time enjoying Family, outdoors and life
To get a coyote with a cane arrow with a nap head, with my board longbow. To get my son doing this stuff. Win the lottery and retire LOL

To become more consistant with my form and accuracy, and go 4 for 4 next season, Elk, Muley, Hog and Turkey with my Longbow.
Oh Otto you ain't near old enough to retire!

That about Covers it for Now, and None of the Goals are in Any Order except the way I thought of them!! God is Number One, Period!! The Rest will fall in Line!! :readit: :archer:
Overall, spend more time with my family.....outdoors!

Make it to 2011 in one piece.
I'll add one more.

Tom
In 2015 I'll be 55 and hanging up the corporate gig for sure.
I do however plan on having the wife continue to work till she's 80. I gotta pay for my toys ya know.
I want to serve the Lord by helping those whom I can, be a good father, husband and friend. Hunting is secondary to those things. I would like to build a selfbow and continue to improve my knapping. I would like to take my spring turkey with my longbow. I would love to find a way to hunt elk or mule deer this year.
Get a new JOB!!!
The wife and I are expecting so my goal is to become a good Father first and foremost. She should be here May 1.
Bow-related goals?
1) Take my first deer with a longbow
2) Take my first rabbit with a longbow
3) Take my first Turkey with a longbow
1. Take a deer or rabbit with my longbow.
2. Practice more, much more.
3. Attend a local 3-D shoot to connect with local trad guys.
Shot my first trad turkey and buck.
Hunt a lot more as I did not get to hunt as much as I would have liked this year.
And try to get someone new into trad archery. I did it this year and its a goal for next year.
mine is to be missouri asa trad state champion again, I would liek to hold the title for at least three years in a row that is a long term goal for me
I'd like to get back in shape and stay there! I'd also like to kill 7 hogs and three deer with my self-made longbows. I'd like another chance at "hogzilla" this year, if he is still around. :)
I have a few archery/hunting related goals for the year:
1. Become proficient with my longbow to the point I can hunt with it next season
2. Following number one, take a hunting trip of some sort out of state and be able to kill something with my longbow
3. Try to get my wife into shooting. She likes being outdoors, just not the hunting part. I would love to get her into archery, if nothing but shooting a few targets in the yard.
4. Try to give back to the sport in some way, namely introducing at least one new person to the outdoors and helping them grasp the basics of the sport we all enjoy.
Draw a moose tag.....don't care if its ME, VT, NH or New Brunswick....This has to be my year!
This year will be the start of my grandsons hunting with out Gram pa or dad sitting with him. My goal is to teach and help to get his first deer.
whitetail with selfbow. Elk hunt
Backpack hunt to the cap one more time & invite a TG member to hunt sika deer in the rut.
Kill a deer or turkey with selfbow and bone point. I was close this year had a six yard shot and biffed it! :knothead: :knothead:
to get my first trad kill on a whitetail and continue to improve my shooting
First off loose about 50lbs.
Kill my first ever hog this spring and maybe a turkey too.
Be the best father that i can for my daughter.
Last but not least talk my wife into letting me buy a few more bows without loss of life or limb.
Kill a turkey with an arrow I make, guided by the feathers of the turkey I took this year with my Widow.
Get into bowfishing.
Drop the string on a nice whitetail buck if I don't do so by next week.
Double my net worth..........
make alot of stuff out of my old deer hides
practice with my recurve
get some wooden arrows
get a longbow if my wife will let me
harvest a buck or doe, or both with my recurve
eat my 2 bucks from 09
Biggie, that may be a big goal for you, but I could probably do that by finding some change on the ground! Plus it could depend on who you ask about how much my net worth is. Something over nuthin is a huge increase!
Good luck to everyone on having a happy and successful new year!
I'm itchin for payback on a black boar hog that swatted my arrow away with his leg on last years florida hog hunt. I head down on jan 10th and this "ninja" hog or one of his buddys is on my list. Second, is be more consistent ar with my shooting at the muzzy stump shoot, to hit 17 the first round and then 4 two rounds later wasa killer
And third is to actually put my stand in the proper spot to get a 20 yard shot instead of watching that nice buck walk by at 35 yards.
