Title: The Shaman World Tour
Post by: Brent Rudolph on December 08, 2009, 12:59:00 PM
Actually, national tour. Svein and I couldn't figure out how to get the bow to Norway, so I thought I would do the next best thing. It will start the tour in The Republic of Texas.

Each shooter will have the Shaman for 5 days. Please ship it on the 6th day. Shipping instruction are as follows:

1) USPS
2) Notify me and the next shooter that it is in route. A list will be provided with the bow of each shooter including phone number and address in the order in which it is to be mailed.
3) Ship insured with a tracking number. Provide the tracking number to the next shooter.
4) ENJOY!

And........................It begins!

I had to start buying more 3 piece bows because my wife does not spot the smaller square packages and know its another bow vs the tell tell long tube which she knows right off the bat!   :bigsmyl:   Give us some feedback when you get a chance and when is the Bow coming to Oklahoma!

Got the bow unpacked and put it together. It is a pretty little bow.
I strung it up and it had a low brace height to start with. The profile reminded me of the Little Delta bow (except a lot shorter ntn). By pure happenstance the brace height was 6 5/8". The pics look 7"+.

Yep bring it up to 7 - 7 1/2 I put a new string in with it and didn't shoot it.  Might take a little while to get it to settle.

Yeah, I set it at 7 1/4 and started on the nock height. Have it at 3/8".
I have some 2016s and 2018s for another bow; Shooting them with 100 grain points.
Here is my best 15 yard group, so far:

This little bow will force a good release.
The green-fletched arrow all by itself was the last one. Just threw it out there I guess.
This bow will make me shoot my bows better.

I'll suggest you have your feathers lined up better than I did. Cut the top of my hand up.  :smileystooges:

You might have the nock pt a bit low if your hitting yoru hand with the fletch.

This is my 28 yard group (measured with a 100' tape, not estimated).
Imagine this is the kill zone on a vile black hog. That's what I do.
I raised the nock height to a little more than 1/2" and it really helped. Thanks, Wingnut.

I really feel for the all the fine folks working for USPS, UPS and the other private carriers.  Heck the UPS guy dropped a package off here the other night at 9:30.  He is usually here about 4.

The Shaman World Tour has made it to Alabama.  What a neat little bow.  I shoot 64" lonbgows and 60" recurves so my initial reaction when I opened up the box was "wow - this is a little bow!"  I assembled it and strung it up and was immediately impressed though.  Great craftsmanship.  It was dark so I turned on the yard lights and shot maybe 50 arrows through it.  Within minutes I was shooting some "heart-sized" groups at 20 yards.  This is gonnna be fun!  More updates as I get to spend more time playing with it.  Hopefully I can squeeze in a hunt before I send it off to the next lucky guy.

This thread will be a good and long read!

Sorry we couldn't make it work Brent, I shall be strict with the Norwegian Postal Service, so that they will make this kinda stuff easier in the future  :D
Or maybe I'll just move to the States! Probably easier, lol!

To everyone, enjoy the shooting, and keep writing the good stuff!

I got home before dark tonight so I was able to shoot some more and get the bow set up.  The first pic is a group shot with broadheads from 10 to 25 yards.  I think she's ready to hunt. Unfortunately its going to blow hard and rain all day tommorow.  Ughhh!

Maybe the weather will hold off long enough for you to get a hunt in. How long are the arrows? Wondering when quivered if they are longer than the lower limb. Great looking setup, and not a bad group. Enjoy.

Svein, you got a place to stay if you are looking at relocating. Might be a bit drastic to move all the way here from Norway because of the postal service. Just saying.......

Ty for the invite! If opportunity knocks, I will drop by  ;)
It might sound a bit drastic, but if so, i'm moving because of archery, not the postal service  :D

Doesn't look like Shaman will get to hunt Alabama.  Her time will be up on Christmas day.  Between the weather and all the Christmas activity I don't see it happening.  I will send her on to the next stop on Saturday.

Brent - those arrows are 31" bop and are just about even with the limb tip.  That little quiver works nice on that bow though - its a Mystic Longbow quiver that I've had for quite a while.

Shot a few more arrows between rains today.  This bow is quick and quiet. Just a soft thump when you drop the string.  The quiver and 4 arrows added just enough mass to the bow to make it feel just about right for me.

I want to thank Brent and Mike for the opportunity to try her out.  I like it.  Shaman gets a thumbs up from me!

Post by: Winterhawk1960 on December 30, 2009, 04:33:00 PM
Yep......she arrived in "hillbilly land" yesterday. I took her out of the box, put her together, and strung her up.

This is one gorgeous little bow folks. She got quite the workout today indoors at the club. Usually, a friend of mine (Horner) and myself get together at least once a week and shoot for a few hours. Today was that day.

Like an idiot, I forgot the Selway stringer that was packaged with the bow, and couldn't unstring her while we were there, to change the brace height. My draw length is right at 30" and this little bow handled it just fine. I've gotta tell you.......she flat out "smokes" an arrow downrange. Absolutely no finger pinch, and as quiet as a church mouse. This bow was built for performance, and it sure showed it's stuff today.

My buddy was shooting her, and he put it in the best terms, that I have ever heard. He said...."You can't help but smile, when you shoot this bow". It will truly surprise you, in many ways. The worksmanship, the looks, and the performance was absolutely flawless. She definately shoots as well as she looks.

I'm gonna have to make another trip out to the club, before my time is up, and this time I'm gonna remember the stringer. I also forgot my heavier spined arrows. Up until now, my GT 35/55's with 175 grains up front have shot out of everything that I have put them through. The spine was weak with this bow. I will also, remember my 55/75's next time.

At Bryan's shorter draw length, the 35/55's were just fine........I can't believe that I forgot the dang stringer    :knothead:   I'm also gonna try to take a few pictures of the bow, at full draw. It's almost unbelievable that those limbs will take that much bending. I'll keep you guys posted, and I would like to thank Brent....once again for sending this bow out for us "common folk" to try out.

I have shot numerous bows of short length, and this one........sure feels nice.

I'll report back later........   :campfire:

I am pleased you are enjoying your time with the Shaman. You and your "Billy" buds are very welcome. I get a kick outa this stuff. It is a fun bow to shoot. Thanks to The guys at Dryad for the workmanship. They always turn out great work. And thanks to Jason "Son of Wingnut" for his computer savy. He made this project SO easy. I do agree that a 30" draw pic would be fun to see Winterhawk.

I shot the Shaman!
(But I did no shoot the dep-yoo-tee...   :smileystooges:   )

What a smooth little gal she is, too! All the snappy charm of the Sheepeater in a sleek takedown bow design... what's not to like? Many takedowns strike me as clunky and heavy in the hand. I know that lots of folks like heavy bows, but I like 'em a little lighter. This fills the bill.

Thanks for the opportunity to try another fine bow, Brent, and congratulations to you and Dryad in the development of the Shaman.

I can't think of one word to sum her up but elegant, not gaudy comes to mind. Maybe WOW is what I'm looking for.

Killie, she said Hi back at ya'.

Mike & Brent, we're gonna become really close friends in the next couple days.

Owlbait, she shoots like a bow 8-10#heavier. So far GT 55/75's, Beman 400's, AD trads & trad lites. She seems very tolerant of different arrows. Tomorrow we're going to try some sweet POC's on for size that I got here from Dave Pagel  :bigsmyl:

You have to love that !!! Some of the bows I've owned were down right picky with arrows  :)  I wish she was on the Pacific not the Atlantic  :(

Larry,

Last time I heard "Mike & Brent, we're gonna become really close friends in the next couple days"  was when Rusty and I headed for the hots springs while elk hunting.  Upon arrival another truck was parked and had a selfbow in the gun rack.  Rusty was thrilled that we'd run into another trad hunter.  Anyway we got down to the springs and the two guys were in tubs.
Rusty walks up and in his best Texas accent says "we're gonna become really close friends in the next couple of minutes."

Rusty and I proceeded to fill our tubs and turned around to see the other guys running up the hill. Wonder what they thought he ment?

Hey Coaster,
No worries, she'll get over this direction. With the correspondence I've had with Brent, she should be here in Montana sometime around April or so. The schedule is give or take based on shipping, etc. I'm really looking forward to shooting it myself.
The reviews are all sounding positive so far.
Have a great weekend all.

David,

There is a string headed your way and Brent said he had one ready to ship the other day.

Also your new Sheepeater in on the build list now and should be ready within two weeks.

Brent,

Dang that's too bad about the sudden change in work schedule.  Don't worry we may be going to Colorado instead and not have the hot tub issues at all.  LOL

Well, its been a pleasure to shoot that little beauty. Its "CUTE".My wife asked if it was a kids bow its so compact.
Looks can be deceiving.Although its small in stature it performs as well as any bow Ive shot. For the size of it it is extremely forgivig,no finger pinch at all, shoots a heavy arrow flat out to 40 yards, the riser points like a an extension of your arm, super quiet and it just looks good.
What else can I say?Everyone that shot it here was amazed at how quick it shot my 29 1/2" MFX 500s with a 145 in front.
This is a bow that will suprise anyone who has ever assumed that short bows are unforgiving. This thing can shoot!
Last of all is the price.Very, very reasonable for such a well built piece of equipment that will shoot right along with any bow.
The bow will be delivered to David Kretschmar next and hopefully someone will poke a bunny with it.I tried but didnt see any the 2 times we hunted.Killed some stups though, they didnt have a chance.
Thank you Brent and Wingnut for giving me the opportunity to shoot the bow and congradulations on building such a fine bow.

Brent and Mike any way that bow can find its way to Minnesota. More than a few up this way loking for a shorty: kind of thick in the woods up this way if your hunting the right spots.

Fathers day weekend would be a great time to have that bow to show off. There is a great shoot in Coon Rapids MN June 18,19 and the 20th. This is the 18th annual and more than a few folks attend.

Funny you should ask.  I got an e-mail about an hour ago that something in a box came to the house.  I had no idea what it could be because I had nothing on order.  I had the wife open it up.  She e-mailed back it was a bow!     We were both surprised someone sent me a bow.  I was not faking it this time.   :D     Then I thought wait a minute.  I asked if it was yellow wood and a 3pc TD.  She e-mail back a couple minutes ago that it was.  So now I am checking this thread to see if I missed something because I had no idea it was on the way.

We had company tonight so I just got a chance to bolt her togather.  What is the brace height range on the bow?  It is at 7" now.

I don't have any full lenght 500 spine shafts, but I do have some at about 30 1/4" along with some 50 gr. brass inserts.  I will try some 125 and 145 points to see what happens.

Shaman arrived yesterday. Thanks Tom. I was surprized at the lightweight for a Takedown as was memebers of the Trad league I shoot in. The Dryad owners thought the riser was very similar to the longbows they own. Comments: Very smooth draw, quiet, a bit of a "thump" at the end of the shot, perhaps from those deep hooks returning to the brace height? I have a week to shoot her and am looking forward to more personalized testing and review. My initial thoughts: the bow was quick for 45# and very smooth. I need some time to dial in the nock height and play with arrow weight but my 29 1/2" AD HammerHead trad lite with 145 gr up front seems to fly well. Thanks for the chance to shoot her Brent. OHIO? Really? WE still have Pony Express mail here so don't get too anxious. I'll try to wrap her in some Maize and Blue when she ships out.   :bigsmyl:

Well I have been a little delinquent on my comments.  This last week has been jamb packed, and because of it I only got to really shoot the bow Friday and Saturday.  I did get a fair amount of shooting in on Friday.

I strung her up, steeped out the door of the barn and launched three arrows at 22 yd.  1.5" group!  My 18 n 1 is on some slick hard packed snow and with the warm up it rotates on the impacts so it is tighter than it looks.  I thought WOW the holy grail of bows!  Then I shot a bare shaft, and I realized it was a really stiff arrow.  My next couple of groups were not as tight, but still good.  I always seem to be able to shoot a bow I have never touched well at first.  I got centered up and then of course sent the bare shaft off the side and into the snow not to be found Friday.  I should have changed up point weight faster.  I upped that and kept shooting.

Not the greatest pic's, but I just had my phone out with me and the bow in my hand and not in the photo's.

The bow shot very stable and consistent for a short light bow.  I did get some sensation of the string angle at 29 1/4" draw.  I wouldn't say pinch, but I noticed it closing in more than my 60" bows, but not all that much more than my 60" TD LB.  It was very tolerable.

The two things I noticed right off other than the accuracy was the thump in the hand and the way the bow loved to hit my arm.  It had a lot of forward jump that didn't bother me at all.  It seemed to jump right at the target and not flip around or bother my hand or elbow.  I turned up the brace from the 7" it was at to 7 1/2".  That as better, but it still got my arm.  I would have liked to go up to 8", but the string was a little wound compared to what I am used to on strings, and I was not sure what the brace range was.

The grip is very slim.  My other bows have more of a flat or large radius section for me to push my base of thumb into.  This grip is very narrow.  I tried a few different grips and found three to work fine.  One was more of an off the side suitcase grip, one was three fingers tucked into the riser, and the other was a medium grip pressure controlling grip that worked well.

My groups were not the best with the unknown arrow spine so I switched over to some 400's I had.  They were longer with 100 gr. brass. I played with a few points in the afternoon on Friday.  I got a combo a little stiff, but it was shooting a bare shaft like a bullet.  I was having fun shooting that 25-30 yd. and watching that shaft just disappear in flight when all of a sudden OOCH! there goes a new arrow.  That was my first ever robin hood with a bare shaft.  Typically they are not going so straight that they will do more than damage a nock.

I had fun shooting the bow.  It was very light and compact all around.  I am not sure it is really 54" as reported.  Has to be at least 56".  I think someone is just pulling my leg.  I should have taken a tap to it.  It is real stable and accurate for such a little bow.  I have not shot a curve much in a while so I thought it was very quiet.  I loved how smooth it was on the draw.  I wish it was 5-7# heavier to better feel how it was drawings.  It had very good cast for the weight.  It sure sparked my interest in the static limb bows.  I don't know if it is for me, but 2" longer, a little grip shape adjustment, and a few more pounds could have gotten it lost in the mail.

Thanks for the chance to shoot it!

No pics but just finished an extended shooting session. I shot AD Hammerhead Trad lite shafts 29 2/3" 145 gr field pt Total weight 535 grains, and Victory 400 30" 225 up front total weight 532gr. Both arrows shot well. I shoot 3 under and had to move the nock set to 5/8" high. I tried moving the silencers as there is a distinct sound that I couldn't get rid of. In fact, the top silencer fell off. Brent, how do you want it replaced?
I also tried multiple grip options. The grip forces my hand into an uncomfortable position(for me). I prefer deeper locator grips. I was able to rotate my hand out 45 dgrees and the bow was very comfortable to shoot like that. Without the noise, the bow shot well, and drew very smooth. My tradgang friend shot it and the bow was harsh for him at nearly a 30" draw. I draw close to 29 and felt comfortable with it. Construction is nice, bow is extremely light for a 3 piece. She nods straight at the target on release. A bit jumpy when unstringing those big hooks. I will try to get after some bunnies on Monday or Tuesday and ship her out Weds. Thanks Brent.

Leatherneck, did the Shaman make it to you? Like I said, mail service is slow from our village.
Brent, have you considered a limb with slightly less hook? I wonder if that would change the noise I heard or would it impact performance too much?
Title: Re: The Shaman World Tour
Post by: xtrema312 on March 21, 2010, 10:19:00 PM
It is a tricky bow to string for me, but I think that goes with the static tips.  It is one I would leave strung most of the time if I had it.  However, I only shoot R/D LB's right now so that makes it seem like a much bigger difference than what it would be stringing it vs. a standard limb curve.

Leatherneck should have the bow. Anyone? Owlbait, I havent thought of less curve in my bows. I went with it in order to start the compression process earlier in the draw. The thump you were experiencing could probably be worked out with brace height and a bit more tuning. Hard to say, usually a test bow comes to you and you wont have the right arrow selection so forth, so getting one to shoot right for everyone is pretty much not going to happen. Stringing a preloaded static tip bow is different. You should take care until the stringer gets the bow past the breakover point. In reverse, unstringing, one should go real slow when getting it back to relax. Just a short spot that they all will be a bit tricky. My friends at Dryad do a limb with less curve.

Well, since you guys twisted my arm. I shot it tonight and was sure wishing I had a couple more days. I'm off wed/thur and go back out on Fri. How about I get it shipped on Fri. morning Nick?
Thanks again guys, I appreciate the understanding. I'll even get some pics to post up. I better go and unwrap it now  :D

Brent, the vacation was great. We go fishing in Texas every year. We also try to get on some pigs as well. Nobody allowing hunting for pigs in this area so fishing it was. We go to Texas to try and break 10 pounds on a largemouth bass. We've been going since 1997. Well I finally did it. I caught an 11pound 11oz. largemouth! Trip of a lifetime. Oops, better keep this trad. I swear that bass was carrying a longbow.

Sorry for the late post but really busy this time of year. I want to thank Brent for the opportunity to shoot this wonderful bow. I loved the small handle. Was very, very smooth on the draw. No habd shock whatsoever. I didn't have time to get some other arrows ready so I was shootin my 610grain ones. Although a little heavy on the spine, this bow shot them really well. I definately would like to shoot one in a heavier poundage. One of these might just find their way on my bow rack sometime. Thanks again.

Mike

Mike, glad you got some arrows through it, AND glad you got that bass before he got an arrow off at you! I grew up in East Texas lake country. Chased lots of hogs and deer in what is now the bottom of Lake Fork.

Ohio! Has the Shaman provided any meat nkw880? Remember I like my ringnecks medrare.
