I have quite a large amount of quality basecoat/clearcoat paint that I would like to try on some arrows. Has anyone ever used this type of paint? I have Spies/Hecker paint, House of Kolor, Alsa and DuPont Hot Hues paints. I also have quite a bit of acrylic urethane clearcoat. I plan on using an airbrush or small detail gun to apply the paint as I can apply it in thinner coats as compared to dipping. I hate to buy any other type of paint if what I have would work. I have some pretty exotic colors to choose from
Do you think this would work? I only plan on using it on carbon or aluminum arrows for now.
Any info would be appreciated
thanks
David
Are these automotive type paints?
I have never used any of the paints. If you already have them, the best way to find out if they are compatiable is to experiment.
Fletcher,
Yes, they are automotive type paints. They do have to be clearcoated though. The basecoat itself is not solvent or weather resistant like acrylic enamel. The clearcoat is though(to a point of course).
I was planning to try it on a few, I just thought maybe someone here had done it before. I figured it would probably work but I wasnt sure. Some of the paints are really neat(marbalizer, chrome etc) and if it works I think it would make for some really cool arrows.

Alsa has some incredible special effect paints that I've been tempted to try. I'd sure be interested in your results.
I don't think you'd have any compatibility issues but I wonder if the paint is flexible enough to not crack when the arrow flexes.

To sidetrack just moment - you may want to
'test' some of your paints with the various
fletching glues before you get in deep.
A good bond is when you firmly pull on
the fletching and it stays put.
I'm sure it will work, you will need to prep the aluminum shaft with a metal etching primer so the paint doesn't peel off. I did some with the "cheap" auto clear. I did not put hardner in the clear and I dipped them. I did not like the results but I think if you use the air brush and add the hardner to your clear you will have awesome results. You may test it on a carbon shaft to to see how it works before doing a complete set.
