Not Sure Where To Put This, but I am Looking for a Relatively Easy Pattern for Making a Buckskin Shirt? Can I use a Jacket to Copy Off Of? Maybe a Flannel Shirt?? :readit:

Mike
you can use an old shirt that fits you well. It's best to cut it apart and trace the pices onto paper. you can then customize however you want by adding a hood, armpit gussets etc. It's also not a bad idea to use the pattern you've created to make a shirt out of an old sheet or something to make sure everything fits right before cutting into that buckskin. Are you using braintan? If so i can offer a few more tips if you're intersted. good luck

This is exactly what i did great advise
Are you going to use bought chemical taned skins or are they braintaned?
also make sure you stretch the leather very well in all direction before cutting paterns and make it just a smidg small as the leather will stretch a bit.

Bill if your using leather from tandy
i would suggest you smoke the hides before doing anything.
Smoke the Hides?? Like....I am going to show My Ignorance here...HOW do I go about that Process? Liquid Smoke? p.s. AWSOME SHIRT!!
With braintanned buckskin smoking is an absolutely necessary step prior to turning skins into clothes, it prevents the skins from drying stiff if they become wet. Chem-tanned skins will be perfectly serviceable unsmoked, however either the color, smell, or both may be unacceptable to you (or the critters), smoking will remedy this. You gotta use real smoke.
It will also help make the chemically tanned skins more water resistant and enhance the color. Smells great to.
i will forward how to smoke the skins if you want.
