I am looking at the Ashby heads (315 grains) and the grizzly stick safari's.
I have a Shrew 58# Classic hunter.
What do you think.?
Do you know if there are weight tubes for them (they are tapered)....looking for about 750-800 grains for the finished arrows.

Jerry, you might look at the carbon express line of shafts as well. They have some pretty heavy weights and you can add weight tubes and brass adapters to push it on up. I tried to tune Grizzly Stick Alaskans to fly from a 57#@28" Super Shrew and I never did get what I consider acceptable arrow flight. There are alot more component options available for the Grizzly Sticks now so that would help. I AM NOT bad mouthing the Griz Sticks in any way, shape or form. I shot a 29" Alaskan with the 75 grain adapter and Woodsmans w/the long aluminum adapter and got excellent performance with my 57#@28" Widow SA. Shot completely thru a bull caribou length ways on a follow up shot. In the right hip and out the left fron chest!!! Great shafts!!! Just not sure if the Safari and a 58# Shrew will be compatable. Bison aren't that hard to penetrate with an arrow. My wife got right at 24 inches of penetration on a 1400 pound bull with a 48# at 28" recurve that she was only drawing 26 inches. I don't remember the exact arrow weight but it was somewhere in the low 500's weight wise. It would have been a perfect shot if it had just been 6 inches farther forward. Considering it was the first animal she ever shot with a bow, it was starting to turn away from her, and she was standing in the middle of about 100 of them I think she did very good :D Unless you hit them in the elbow like I did the first time I shot one just about any arrow running around 10 gpp should do just fine. We were not hunting them, it was a kill it so you can eat it deal but still a lot of fun, tasty, and educational!

Talk to Ed or Garrett at Alaska Bowhunting Supply. They'll get you the right set-up as far as GrizzlyStiks go. I think the Alaskans would be perfect for your bow weight.

why not shoot ash? great arrow, extremely durable and you can get some great weights with it!
Got to agree with Joseph. I harvested a bull and was shooting about 9 gpp with a 65# bow that I draw to about 61#. The arrow penetrated just up to the fletchings and at a quartering angle. Although they are deep critters, they actually aren't that broad in the kill zone. Like Joseph has already mentioned, you should not have a problem unless you hit the elbow. A buddy has harvested, or witnessed many bison harvested. His experience, I listened to. He said, wait for the buff to take a step forward and simply replace the position where the elbow joint was with an arrow. the heart is low in the chest. Just my experience, they aren't much different than shooting an elk or moose. 10 gpp is plenty withoiut beefing up the buff arrow.
BTW- They are tasty!
I shot mine with a 63# Robertson Vision Falcon. Arrow was a laminated birch with an Ace Super Express total arrow weight was 800 gr +. The arrow went through the elbow and penetrated the heart, he was down in 30 seconds or so and went about 25 yards. 25 yard shot.

arrow = back of nock to tip of broadhead - 33.5"
MFX - 340 Classic.
BH - Magnus - 135 grain - I think they are called magnus 2's with an aluminum adapter - 41 grains
75 grain brass insert
I added some 3/16 wood dowels tonight
Total weight right now is 754 grains :bigsmyl:
The FOC is 13% with this set up using FULL LENGTH measuring for the calculation (don't go there ok - i know there is a bunch of ways to skin this cat but it's close enough I think) :rolleyes: .
I have ordered some steel adapters which would put her at just over 810 grains, but not sure if I will need them and I have some weight tubes ordered to play with later too. I also picked up some Steel force BH that are like the Ashbey ones at 300 grains to play around with later too, not sure they are the same quality but the weights are about even ...3 RIVERS is out of ashbey's.
I ordered some safaris for later..to play with
Anyway I think she has plenty of weight and still shoots plenty fast so I think we will be ok.
