Title: 2nd Annual WI Bunny Romp.. Jan 16 (Post Hunt Report)
Post by: Paul Mattson on December 04, 2009, 09:27:00 AM
We had a great time last hunt, with over 30 people showing up.  The romp was also featured in the Premier issue of Trad Archers World.  Let's make this coming Bunny Romp even better.

Dates, Once again it will take place in Jan.  I was looking at Jan 16 or 26, possibly the 30th.  The meeting place will be again at the Waterloo Gun and Archery club house.  I think this worked out great last year.

It will be a pot luck, if possible bring a dish to pass.  Last year no one left hungry.  I will have the Coffee and Rolls ready in the morning.

Jan 16th.            :archer:

Direction to the Waterloo Gun Club.  And a map Link;
     http://web3.userinstinct.com/47891051-waterloo-gun-club.htm

From Milwaukee-  I-94 west to Lake Mills/Waterloo Exit.  Take Right on Hwy 89.  Follow 89 into Waterloo which will become 89/19, take a right (North) at 4 way intersection, stay on 89 until 89 takes a sharp left.   Keep going north which will be Cty T; follow for about a mile, you will see a sign on the right for the Waterloo Gun Club take a left at the sign.

From Madison-  I-94 east to Marshall/Deerfield Exit.  Take a Right on Hwy 73 to Marshall, at the stop light in Marshall take a right on Hwy 19 to Waterloo.  Take a Left at 4 way intersection 89 North.  stay on 89 until 89 takes a sharp left.   Keep going north which will be Cty T; follow for about a mile, you will see a sign on the right for the Waterloo Gun Club take a left at the sign.

You mean the wolves haven't eaten all the bunnies?  8^).   Sounds like a great time, just a little to long of a drive for me.  I'm still using those Legacy arrows you made me.

Can we order up some warmer weather this year? Ten below zero loses its appeal after a while. Depending on the snow, I may bring my beagle along this time...or some snow shoes.   :)

Bunnies and bows are as good as it gets!
The last weekend in January is the Kalamazoo expo, so if we could stay away from that weekend it would be good.  Not sure how many of the others go to that, but I know I will be there.

You know, I was talking to my daughter this evening and told her that if the weather was better I might bring Emmett (our beagle) on the hunt. She said, "is that the hunt where you...(you know)?"

I have to stop telling her when I do embarrassing things. What the heck, bowhunting wouldn't be half as fun without making a fool of oneself every now and then.   :biglaugh:

I'll pencil that date in on my calender.

Would anyone be up for another bunny hunt in February ? In the Monroe,WI area. it's about 1 hour south of Madison.
We usually have a bunny hunt on Super Bowl weekend.

Blind One: A WI nonresident 5-day small game license is $55, full season is $85.

Kevin: I'd definately be up for it. Monroe is only about an hour and a half away from me.

How does Feb. 6th or the 7th sound for those of you that would like to do a bunny hunt in the Monroe area?

I'm checking with my wife to make sure we are not committed for that weekend. We could do the pot luck thing and either gather at my house or the Rod & Gun club if it's open on the date we pick.
According to the weather man we should have plenty of snow.    :campfire:

Next year I will have to remember about the Rib Mtn shoot.

Forecast is looking great.  If you have snow shoes, I wouldn't leave them at home.  If nothing else they make great brush stompers.

I plan on being out at the Gun Club getting the coffee on by 7.

I went out yesterday for a little warm up, kicked up 3 rabbits, got off 3 shots, scared the heck out of one of them and only lost 2 arrows! I chased these 3 rabbits around for about 4 hours, it was a blast!

I would very much like to bring my beagle, but the deep snow and his old age has me a little concerned. He's healthy, but he just doesn't have as much energy as he had a few years ago. As they say in football, "it will be a gametime decision."

I'm definately bringing my 12-year-old daughter. She can't hunt (no license), but she's excited about tagging along.

One other thing on the use of snowshoes there is no right or left for the shoe itself it's how the bindings were installed making sure that the buckle is located on the outside of the foot.  That way the buckles don't rub against each other. Have a great time.

I can't decice who's more tired, my beagle or me. And I still can't believe Emmett and Cricket cornered two big raccoons in that tunnel, and not only got out unscathed but treed them.

What a good time! I'll try to update when I'm able.

I wasn't on the hunt, stayed back and kept an eye on the crock pots. But, I was told a lot of Bunnys were kicked up.  They were just to fast to get a good shot off.

It was a great time, guys came from around the state, and one young lady came with her father from out of state.  The weather man was somewhat off but it was still warmer than last year.

Many were at last years hunt, but we also had some newcomers.  It's always great to put a face to someones website handle.

I know pictures were taken, hopefully they will be posted soon.

I would like to Thank Everyone that attended.  And of course there will be a Bunny Romp 3.

Yeah, there were plenty of bunnies kicked up, I kicked up 5 different  ones, chased a couple of the same ones around getting 2 shots off, one went right between the ears... doah! My friend Andy got a shot off at the same rabbit I missed, sure was a good time! Andy had the biggest Fox Squirrel coming his way just when he was about to shoot, his lab, Coot gave a little warning whine to alert the Squirrel and he darted off into the thicket never to be seen again!

The Story about me climbing the tree is, Old York, Tim, took a shot at one of the coons, his arrow got stuck up in the tree, after the coon fell down I went up the tree to get his arrow! He was kind enough to pass along 2 excellent flu flu's to me! Good times, good eats and new friends! What else could you ask for!

I know Jason and Tim both had there cameras and were taking pictures. I'm hoping they chime in here soon with pics!

Joe, thanks for posting the pics....and for getting my arrow. I'd still be stuck in that tree and mistaken for a very large ugly racoon   ;)

Had a great time, met some fine folks, fell in love with that Coot-Dog too!

Thanks Paul for heading up the 2nd annual hunt, may there be many more

Thank you Paul,  for organizing the day and to Joe and Bob for being gracious enough to let us hunt your property.  A great day overall, with probably at least 30-40 or more shots taken that morning!  Some of those shots were even at rabbits!

Thanks again.  Very generous of you all.

It was good to see you guys again, and meet some new guys as well.

Paul, my son and I left without saying THANK YOU! We had a great time and really appreciate all the work you put into the hunt. Thanks to Joe and Bob for the use of their hunting land!

Jerry K. told me how to straighten my old Ben Pearson recurve. I've almost got it perfect. It's over 30 years old, my first hunting bow. My oldest wants to shoot it. He won a set of Beaver Balls at the raffle and I put them on the bow, it's just about ready to go. The bow he is holding in the photo with the coons is mine from 35+ years ago. I guess he wants to upgrade, HA!

We didn't get any shots at rabbits, but we did help put a dent in the coon population.

Notes for next time:

(1) Don't forget the venison sausage and cheese in the refrigerator next time.

(2) Bring a couple of arrows with broadheads next time in case we run into raccoons again.

(3) While others are still out hunting and you are standing around by the truck shooting the bull, keep your bow strung and arrows handy in case you see a rabbit!

(4) If you leave your truck back at the range and ride with someone else to the hunting area, don't forget your snowshoes in your truck back at the range.

(5) Blunts, even metal ones, don't penetrate raccoon hide. (see number item number 2)

(6) No matter what happens you will have fun!

Thanks Again!

BC

Sorry about the delay. As promised, here are a few photos...

My daughter, Rachel with our beagle, Emmett, and Ben and Chuck with their beagle, Cricket.

Emmett with a nose full of something that he and Cricket were trying to dig out. A couple minutes later, both dogs had found a tunnel into the source of the smell, which we discovered was a pair of raccoons cornered in their den. The dogs were nose to nose with the coons when I scrambled to pull them out of the den.

Both dogs made it out unscathed, and the raccoons treed.

Shot angles were steep and tight. Being a nonresident without a furbearer license, I was content to watch events unfold behind my camera lens instead of my bow.

Emmett inspecting one of the raccoons.

When it was all said and done, both raccoons were brought to bag. Fortunately, neither raccoon attacked the dogs. A friend of mine's black lab needed several stitches after a similar encounter with a raccoon last year, so I'm still a little perplexed as to how these beagles avoided disaster.
