Title: Forward riser bows
Post by: Greg Owen on December 01, 2009, 08:34:00 PM
I am thinking of getting a new bow. I like the forward riser bows. What are your favorite forward risers? How do the handles compare from Shrew to Kanati?  Anyone own both a Shrew and Kanati and have a comparison. Thanks

My favorite is the Black Widow TF now known as the PTF. I started building my own bows in July 2009 and went with the one piece Binghams design but will be making a forward riser bow of "my own design" in a month or two...

I shoot a St. Joe River longbow and it has what I'd call a forward riser.  Most forgiving bow I've ever shot.

I have had both shrews and a kanati.  Both are good bows.  The grips are different and I think the kanati is more center cut.  I had trouble going back and forth between the two because of the center cut issue not the grip.  The shrew grip felt a little better to me and the shrew is offered in a TD thus I no longer have the kanati.  I think the kanati may have been a little faster (never chronoed).  Like I said both good bows.

You might want to consider a BlackCreek Banshee. They are great bows at a low price. Delivery time is 2-4 weeks.
He has one and 3 piece forward riser bows.
Contact Jim Gainey 205-272-2656.

Ok one more dumb question. How is a riser measured? When a riser is 14 inches, does that mean measured around the curve or straight tip to tip? Thanks.

Black Widow and Habu make forward riser recurves.

As does our good friend "Sixby" here on Trad Gang.

Check out the Striker Stinger.  Rick Ellis is a sponser here. (Striker Bows)  Anyhow, the Stinger has a deflexed riser.  It points very naturally.  I have one that's 58" @ 50# and it doesn't stack or pinch my fingers at a 28" draw.  it's fast too.  Rick also makes a 3 pc take down longbow that has a slightly forward handle on it. His customer service and prices are excellent too for what you are getting in a bow.

I really like Kanatis. For me forward handled bows are forgiving. They're all I shoot now. JD Berry makes a forward handled Taipan.

Might want to check out Lee Hoots. He makes a sweet bow similar to Shrew and Kanati
