You can look on the bright side. I couldn't afford a new bow now if I wanted one. Unemployed and no jobs here. Not even slingin' capuccinos at the local coffeehouse. Couldn't even get that job. On my bright side, I am learning what a SWEEEET bow my Martin Saber recurve is.

Good advice from Drewsbow...  You can build board bows quite inexpensively, and, speaking from experience, once you've done a good bow yourself, you'll want to do it again, and again, and again.  Best feature is that you'll find you only want to shoot what you build.  I haven't bought a bow made by anyone else since I started, and I used to buy several a year.  I'm not doing board bows, but only because I prefer the work and tools involved in laminates.  Just put #17 in the oven a couple of hours ago.  Just my opinion, but building increases your understanding and enjoyment of archery.

Building bows is tremendously gratifying and does not have to be expensive. Boards are real good for learning; do a few, and move on to some good staves of local wood-do some research on what's good and how to season it etc. Lots of fun!!

yes, start building your own. I sold a bunch of my custom bows last spring /summer and bought bow building tools. I started off by ordering a dvd from Binghams Projects and using the search function on this site, lots of late nights reading old threads..I had never used a band saw, table saw or sanders before but somehow I was able to build my first recurve with no help. The next bow I am building is a KennyM design longbow.

Well, if you think about it...if ya built your own you could pretty much get the tools and equipment you'd need for the price of one custom bow. With enough left over to get the making for SEVERAL new bows.  That would getcha outta that "1 per year" budget. How much wood, laminates, glue, etc., for how many bows could you get for the equivalent $XXX for that ONE bow/year?  :saywhat:

Jerry, sorry to hear about your accident at work!
All the more reason to keep busy, and i second the suggestions stated above.
Start building your own bows, at least when time is no problem..
Though i would start easy, just to see if you really enjoy it  :)
You don't need much, in the way of tools either for making one piece self flatbows..
You can also start making some arrows, or even do a bit of leatherworking if ventilation does not hold a problem.

Anyway, best of luck to you, and keep those hands busy  :)

Being a God fearing man and so richly blessed, you certainly understand the rewards of reaching out.
Maybe it's time, to give back,, Both to God and to archery.
How about donating all of those custom bow to a boy's club, or selling them and donating half to an archery club.
I can give you a hundred suggestions on ways to share your good fortune.

Sell some bows and use the cash to buy entry level bows. Set up an archery group for youth in your area and share your experience with youngsters just beginning the journey. It will alleviate the boredom and make you a much richer man.
