I thought the morning was going to be a bust. I set my alarm on my cell phone for 5:30...p.m. :knothead: When I woke up and looked at it this morning it said 5:59...damn! I scrambled around, making coffee and getting dressed, ate a piece of toast and headed for the woods. It was starting to get light when I got there, crap! I headed for the closest stand...the one Dave killed his buck from last weekend. My cousin's son-in-law had hunted out of it yesterday morning and hadn't seen a thing, so I wasn't optimistic...especially with my late start.
I climbed into the stand, buckled my HSS, nocked an arrow, hung up my bow, fished my grunt tube out of my pack, and sat down to wait. Within a minute, I saw a buck moving west along the creek about 75 yards away. I hadn't even had time to put on my face mask...ugly was going to have to do. I can called and he turned and started heading right for me. There is a scrape about 12 yards from the stand and he stopped and turned broadside in that. Unfortunately, there was a limb in the way, so I had no shot. I thought if I could just step forward on the stand a bit, I could shoot over the limb. I stepped and the stand squeaked! Up came his head. I tried to hide behind my bow, but it's skinny and I'm not. Exit deer stage left. :(
I watched him run about 50 yards, then slow down. I hit the can call and he stopped and looked back. I thought, what the heck, so I hit it again. Here he comes! He got to about 22 yards and turned broadside again. There were some small branches about 8 yards in front of him, but I could see a window through them. I came to full draw and thought to myself, I've got this shot. From the corner of my eye, I saw his head turn away from me. Then I saw an arrow on its way...dang, I don't recall releasing it.
I saw him duck then run west. I looked back at where he had been standing and could just make out my fletching (it's kinda dim here at 7:05). The color just didn't look right. I climbed down, walked over to the arrow and this is what I found:

Yup! I just imagine deer looking up and thinking, "What the hell is that? It can't be human." And that's all the time I need. :biglaugh:
Great job Russ. What a week for you and your boy! Jason needs to put you two on his web-site!
Yeah, Katie, it has been an awesome season. We have had some encounters with nice deer, and we each took a nice buck. If Jason ever puts a testimonial link on his page, he can count Dave and me in! As you know, he builds a superb little bow. Mine just feels like an extension of me.
very nice congrats
how you liking that bow?

Russ,
Heck of a buck and a great story...looks like curiosity killed the buck in this case! Did I read that correctly that this is your first buck? Is that with traditional or overall?
It may not be as big as your son's deer but it's definitely a very nice buck and as you stated more typical of what a person should expect and be VERY excited and happy about. I think everyone would be excited to see deer like that every day all day!
Awesome!
Josh
Great job on a fine buck!
Great job!
Congrats. That is a sweet looking deer.
That's a dandy buck Congrats on hsving a [lan come together!
Yup, Josh. That's my first buck ever. Even the one I hit with my car was a doe, lol! I've never been much of a horn hunter. I like the meat. It was nice to take a buck, but to be honest, had a nice, fat doe stood in the same spot, I would have been writing a slightly different story. No complaints on this buck though...it's backstrap on the grill for supper tonight! The antlers will look nice in my den too! ;)
  WTG Russ, beautiful bow and a beautiful deer.
Now,... for a black bear in Kachemak bay, eh?
That is a very handsome buck.
Nice bow too...jason is starting mine next week, is that the walnut riser?
Russ-what quiver are you and you son using on your Kanatis? How do you like them? Been thinking of puting one on mine.
I like the black bear idea Tom. I have a savings account going ;)
Katie,
I use an Eagle Flight and really like it. It is very light weight. Dave uses a Linx by Thunderhorn and also likes that. I have a Linx too, but like the EF better due to the lighter weight on the Kanati. It's almost like shooting bare bow. If you like to add a little mass for stability, then the Linx is a great quiver. I think that's why Dave likes his. I don't think you could go wrong with either one.
I like a bow quiver. I usually have a backpack with me, so hanging a quiver on my back just doesn't work out for me. You also don't have to reach around to find an arrow. If you have your bow, you have your arrows.
Russ it is unbelievable that we are shooting through deer of that size with 45-50 lb bows :)
Congrats on a fine deer !
Very nice deer Russ ,I just traded for another kanati so maybe it will bring me luck again .

Congrats on a fine deer !
These bows put a lot more zip on an arrow than any others I have tried. My arrow weighs about 520 grains. I think Dave's were right at 500. That also helps.
Shooting them in the chest helps too.
Awesome Russ! I have been away all weekend so I missed this thread, thanks for sending me the link. I will be adding the father son pics to my sight real soon! Congrats!
Awesome deer! Thanks for sharing the story too!
Thanks to you Jason! I am still amazed at how fast that arrow zipped through my buck, even at 20+ yards. Pushing a 520 grain arrow with a 46# Kanati is no big deal and the trajectory is surprisingly flat. What a great little bow!
Can't beat those Zwickeys!! Congratulations. Very nice.

nice deer!! nice looking bow, too. :archer: :clapper:
