Well i was very excited to go hunting these morning ,

Our season goes from the 27 of nov up to the last days of January and our rut is normally on the last days of December
I took these pic last season after it was over on the last days of January , these buck was already broken on the right main beam, and we already saw him these season

Went last week to hunt in Texas, on public land, it was a real challenge and the weather did not help, it rained mostly all of the days i was there and it was pretty windy ,
I had a nilgai come and stop at 40 yds, i hesitated to shot and well it went away but going there and hunting on public land was a real experience for me, I did not see another trad hunter , and everyone asked me about my camo
Here is for me a hero pic , just going there was a real adventure
(http://i465.photobucket.com/albums/rr20/gerardz17/geralagunaatascosa.jpg)

Good luck to you Gerardo. Hope you will be posting some pics.

I will post some pics later on , but (unfortunaly) they will be of my bloddy arrow.
I need some help and here is my post to get some help of the gang.
I saw a very nice old 8 point about a 130, and made a shot but my arrow went about 10 inches from the front leg same line but to the back so you can say at about the middle of the stomach.
After the shot the buck ran about 30 yds then decided to walk and my cedar arrow with stos broadhead was hanging from the nock on the other side.
At about 80 yds he stopped and stayed there for about 3 minutes and came back towards me but never presented a follow up shot. The arrow was no longer hanging from the side of him and the cut was very clear.
It was about 8:10 and 20 minutes have passed since I shot my buck and I was still seeing him.
He was walking slowly like if he was wounded and heading for the thick brush , the fog was really heavy and i didn´t want to lose sight of him , so i got out of my blind (ground blind) and headed to try to make a follow up and mortal shot, but i never saw him again, and didn`t try to get in the brush as the wind was not in my favor and the fog will not let me see him
I waited for an hour and went to see if i could see some blood where i saw him walk, the floor was covered with very red dark blood (to my surprise)and i went where the deer had stopped about 80 yds or so and there was my arrow really covered with blood.
Seeing the arrow got me motivated i had taught it was a gut shot but if there was a lot of blood these was good. I started my search(1hrs after shot, big mistake) and I went after him only to find more signs but no deer,
these was yesterday morning and after lunch we searched again and we think we jumped him two times so at 4pm we stopped and here i am
What to do?
Did I hit the liver? if so how much time for him to die?
I want to see a good deer anatomy pic and can`t find one in the web
maybe the air squadron ( vultures ) will find him , but i really want to find him before them
thanks
-
Get back out there and see if you can pick up
the trial. If not do a grid search and good luck.Let us know how it unfolds.
-
I would have given the deer five or six hours on a hit based on your description, wihtout pressuring him.
-
Turkey522 is right go and look again if it was a liver shot he has to be dead by now.look to see if the spots he has laid down are getting closer together and then spread out and you should find him.good luck
-
Sounds like a liver shot. Do what Ray said and you should find your deer. Good luck!
-
Does anyone have a dog?
-

I can't go today so i will go tomorrow morning and
come back with my deer
(that is motivation)
the problem is that today it is a sunny day and tomorrow there is a a probability of rain and cold weather,
but I will do what I can , I have heard that sometimes deer go back the way they came in and i did not check a field on the back of my blind so , i will go tomorrow and finish the soles of my boots
-
Good luck, Keep after him.
-
Good luck ill keep my fingers crossed for ya.
-
Update????
-
No luck on finding him today,
I walked all over and repeated the blood trail but nothing, no coyote sign or vultures (which we have many and they find the deer quick) so maybe and these is my positive thinking again he is not dead and will come back.
It started raining at about 2pm and it will keep like these till thursday so i will go to my stand on friday morning, they say it will be sunny and maybe he will be around for a second shot.
I don't know has someone had an experience of a deer taking several days to die, or survive a shot like these?
thanks
-
All I can say is stick with it. I made a horrible shot on a mule deer buck a few years ago. The first arrow struck him at 8:00am I trailed him two canyons to the south and put a second arrow in him at 4:00pm. Still no luck, we found the deer dead two days later. I have been there and it is tough, try to stay positive and learn from the blood trail.
Buena Suerte!
-
My lesson is painful and the taught of that day doesn't leave my mind , I should have waited more time to search for the deer , the problem is that i knew i had to wait more and the bloody arrow and peer pressure told me to go after him, I hope i recover him but, it feels horrible to watch the woods and know he must be laying some where and feel incompetent about it.
-
Go to the closest water where you shot him. If that is a gut or liver shot he will go there and stay close to it until he gets better or dies. I have found several deer that way. God bless and good luck Steve
-
Gerardo
i had a similar experiance this year hit a big buck in one lung with a high shot ended up finding him almost 5 days later when the other finally collapsed Best wishes with the search but in my experience hes going to stay in the area so keep at it and good luck you may get another shot at him
-
The sky opened up and we woke up to a sunny day, So the search was on, and a picture is worth a thousand words.

I am proud to call you a brother of the bow. I have the utmost respect for how you stuck with it until you found him.
God bless,Mudd
-
Wow,way to keep after it..nice buck.
-
nice going, good looking buck
-
nice buck...VERY nice buck!
-
Gerardo, Im glad you found your Buck, CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SHOT!
Its incredible to see an arrow with that much blood and actually no blood trail.
We have been hitting deer and have been having trouble finding blood trails. We think that they are still too fat and the wounds are closing up rapidly after the arrow exits them.
We will continue posting pictures, good luck to everyone!
-
Gerardo,
Congrats on a FINE buck! I am glad you found him.
What bow is that???? It's pretty!
-
Subcribing

You should be very proud of the fact that you hung in and found him. Bad shots sometimes happen. I have done it and many others as well. We hunt as ethically as we can but sometimes a LIVE animal does what a LIVE animal does. Congrats on the hard work and a fine buck!
-
Awesome deer. How far did he go from shot?

Gerardo could you give us the details of the find? Having lost a great buck last year from a similar shot I am anxious to hear the distance, search, etc. I didn't sleep for 2 months after mine and never found hide nor hair. WAY TO GO ON THE FIND!

down times. Way to stay after it.
-
 :clapper:
-
Way to stick with it, beauty of a buck.
-
Thanks
My posts where getting more into a depression forum than a trad bowhunting one, so I am very glad I did find him. He really didn't go to far.
100 yds from the place that I shot him there is a dry stream that eventually leads to a little pond , he was traveling in the dry stream when he feel. When we were searching for him he was probably still alive and was in the heavy brush beside the stream, you know Mexico and Texas brush is pretty thick, 400 yds total from where I found him
So thanks to all and I am glad things turned out great.
I stayed in these weekend and my buddies are trying to get their bucks so probably I will post some pics on Monday
I still have two more tags, and lots of time
-
Yes! That is sweet!
-
Nice! Beauty of a buck!

Shot the two javies near the main house of the ranch. Both were moving shots, first was about 20 yards, second about twelve. We had the smaller one for dinner and he was quite tasty. Could'nt get the cook to share the recipe though.
It has been a great season, I hav'nt had much luck with deer, but I hope to get one soon! Good luck and Merry Christmas to all!!

I'm jeleous.

Enhorabuena Gerardo,
Un post magnífico.
Un abrazo desde España!!
-
nice buck - and good one you for sticking with it. When they are wounded like that they need time...that's it. A friend shot an elk in Canmore once and same thing...didn't wait and he pushed him from his bed......took us four days of tracking...fifth day we were out of time.
He was huge and he went up a mountain of dead fall. His original bed was FULLL of blood...he was going nowhere. Buddy was so excited though he would try to get another arrow in him. The elk saw him and that's the last we saw of him.
I still am haunted. Rolling stones used to sing.
"tiiiiiiiiime is on our side" - but we need to use it wisely.
Congrats and I think you learned lots on this trip and now you can pass the lesson on.
jer bear
-
Thanks Jerry
Yes , a lot of lessons learned , the hard way , but with a happy ending, It is a lot tougher for it to happen on an elk because of all the time and expenses involved in it, but it is not a good thing to leave a wounded animal , not even one that will have died.
Mike
I still have a cold and a coughing that doesn't stop , my wife says the deer will hear my coughing for a mile, but time is running out, and the bucks are fighing and breaking so , hopefully persistence will pay itself and I can redeem myself with a better shot
-
Good Luck!!!
-
Gerardo...nice postings of your deer and your friends. Really cool. Did you get yours with your Treadway...great bow!!!
Dan

Gerardo, buena suerte amigo, take care of the cold, yo tambien estoy poco malo con resfrio, mi familia se bino para el norte en el ano 1946.

Thats what I'm talking about brother!!!!!! Love pics of dead javies.
-
Mike we will soon be hunting some javies together, they are very tough and I believe that a bad shot on a javai, makes it a very difficult recovery, they really are made for the bow
-
Our season is now over, two more months and we while be chasing Rio Grand Turkeys in the Sierra Madre, and Gould Turkey´s in Zacatecas.
Here are some pics of a Javi I got these week.
thanks
