Title: Li'l Favorite by Ron LaClair
Post by: buckster on November 26, 2009, 02:16:00 PM
Any of you Shrew owners that have experience with this recurve, please let me know your thoughts.  On my short list is a two-piece LH 54" model.  Also would be interested in what wood combinations you would suggest.

I am on the list for a bow by John McCullough, but I am not certain if he makes anything close to this model??

Happy Thanksgiving and thanks in advance!

Buck I had a 54" Li"l favorite osage and rosewood. It was a very fast little bow I could tell the difference in FPS vs my Super Shrew and classic hunter longbows same draw/weight. Matt has a 56" right now also they are shooting little bows and great in a turkey blind.

I had one that was a super shooting bow, just a little too heavy and had too get rid of it. Very smooth and stable for a 54" bow.

I have a Li'l Favorite, and it is absolutley the best bow I have ever shot and hunted with. I was fortunate enough to have been able to hunt with the prototype for this model 3 seasons ago (3? I think...) and ordered one immediatley.

It is light and handy in a tree or pop up blind, and I can shoot it sitting on my butt on the ground. It is lightening fast (mine is 57# @ 28") although I couldn't tell you HOW fast, as I have never had it through a chrono.

I shoot a 650 grain arrow, and it never fails to get a passthru on whitetails.

Ron & Crew are building some very beautiful versions of this bow, but mine is the Chameleon version...beautiful, but a true practical hunting bow.

I truly love mine, I can't imagine hunting with another bow.

Barry,

I have several, including the one that Cody (Steel) used to own. They are wonderful little bows, just like the other people posting say. I do personally prefer the Classic Hunter, but only by a little. You have to add carbon backing to the Classic Hunter to get it to shoot as fast as the Lil Favorite without carbon backing. I used to be strictly a recurve shooter and still love them, but I have become a huge fan of reflex/deflex longbows too. Get one and you will fall in love! The Lil Favorite is a Shrew through and through. The wood combination I like best among the LFs I own is the Bumblebee - Osage and phenolic. I do recommend the foam core limbs.

Barry,

I had and sold, regretfully, a Bumblebee Lil Favorite that was a very impressive little bow. 54" 41@28. That bow now resides in Allan's "stable of Shrews" so I know it's in good hands    :)      :)      :)  . As everyone say's, pound for pound, it is a very quick little bow. I was drawing 30" with it and getting 47@30, 185fps with a 450gn Goldtip. John McCullough does make a recurve, his Fiftyniner, which is his takeoff on a 1959 Bear Kodiak. That bow is only available as a 60" bow. I think you'll be pleased if you get your hands on a Lil Favorite. The question you have to ask yourself is "are you a longbow guy or a recurve guy?".

Thanks guys, those are some beautiful Li'l Favs! I think that I am going to have John make me a two-piece 59'r instead of the Griffin.

Also, in the near future I think that I'm going to order myself a 54" Li'l Favorite 2-piece with foam core limbs, maybe in the Bumblebee.

Yes, the Bumblebee Lil Favorite I have used to belong to Michael. She is a beauty! You would love one like that Barry. The three things I would change on her if I had the choice would be to increase the draw weight, increase the length to 56", add a Bow Bolt, and substitute the foam cores for the boo cores.

I have a Lil Favorite bow bolt (also sold a 1pc).  They are cool little bows but I guess my love is for short longbows.  The Shrew Classic Hunter in 54" is my favorite.  I have a bow bolt & two 1pc classic hunters.  I suppose I keep my Lil Favorite cause Gregg made it for me...Doc
