Title: Silvertip recurve BH
Post by: vtmtnman on November 25, 2009, 07:14:00 PM
I recently got a new to me 60" 54@28" silvertip recurve.I was out today trying to get her tuned and it seems to me the bow is loud on the shot.I'm running beaver hair silencers,I wrapped the ends of the string with wool yarn, and I have a double tied on nock point, all on a FF flemish string.I played with the BH some, but I'm unsure what is best.I started out at about 7 7/8",went down to about 7 1/2.7/8 seemed a little better.Maybe I should try 8-8+"?

What is the recommended BH you guys are using your ST curves?

Rich

Rich, on the newer models, Dave recommends a bh of 7 1/4-7 3/4". I think some of the older ones used a slightly higher bh.

I think you may be happier if you try a string silencer other than the beaver hair. I've been using wool yarn and it works great on my Silvertip. I think cat whiskers would also quiet your bow better than the beaver fur.

I agree with Allen.....Beaver silencers look cool, but are the least effective silencers I've used on recurves.

I like cat whiskers.

Mine is a 62" bow, built in 2001.  It is really quiet at 8.5" with bow hush and hush puppies!  I set my hush puppies at the 1/4 points on the string.

What is the total weight of your arrows?

I agree with Allen go with the yarn balls.

I have a 58" Schafer  @ 60# and shoot a 7 1/4 BH. Have rubber whiskers and use a felt pad on the limbs at the contact point on the limbs, 610 grn arrow.. Whisper quiet

I would be happy to take it off your hands if you are unable to quiet it down to your liking  :)

I use Llama wool on my Tip and about 10" down from the tips is whisper quite. It seems to shoot the best with the B/H at 7 1/4 to 7 1/2.

the old Silvertips that Paul made all he used and I had to use was brush Buttons. but that was with dacron strings. I have a new bow that Dave made and the Catwhiskers did the job, its the fastest and best shooting Silvertip I own. Good luck you have a awesome bow.

TJ,I'm just bare shafting right now to see what's going to work for me.I did notice a large difference between a 30"BOP POC and a 30" BOP 2213 though.I think for this bow I'll be running some heavier arrows this time around.

Mine is the same specs as yours, and they shoot heavy arrows very well! Jason

Glad you found one and that you like it. I was just ribbing you a bit    :)   . I have a few Silvertips in my stable and I am very pleased with them as well. In fact all my bows are Silvertips except for one very special Dale Dye Snakewood bow. I have owned close to 200 bows over the last 5 years, the Silvertips for me take the cake! Cat whiskers are the ticket!

Kevin,No worries brother.

I got the catwhiskers on.Helped a little bit,but I think those plus a heavier arrow and some BH adjusting to find the sweet spot is the way to go.

One sweet shooting bow for sure.Very happy I got it.One crossed off the list, several to go.
