Title: Rabbit hounds and recurves
Post by: Stiks-n-Strings on November 25, 2009, 01:50:00 AM
Do any of you guys bowhunt rabbits over hounds?
I gun hunt over my hounds and just stand where they jump the bunny and it most always comes back. I think it would present a good shot oppotunity as I have killed alot of rabbits with a shotgun that could have been taken with a bow.

I love to rabbit hunt with a bow. I lost my last beagle and haven't found a replacement yet. I take a quiver full of arrows as we shoot alot and miss way more than we connect. I pack some flu flu arrows for grouse also. I've yet to connect with a grouse on the wing but I love trying.

You already know how much fun rabbit hunting with a dog is.  Now multiply that times 10!

I tried last year it was a blast! Running shots at rabbits are hard and I never connected but ill be back after deer season.

I shoot a few in front of my beagle with a bow every year.  Not the best way to get rabbit stew, but you get MUCH more mileage out of a rabbit than if you gun him down on the first circle!  Had one circle 13 times and never killed him.  Had to pull off the beagle when it got dark.

The Indiana Bowhunter Association used to have a rabbit hunt in southeast Indiana every January.  Finally got down to only 3-4 people showing up to hunt and it died out.  I am sure we could have the hunt again if there was any interest.  I think there is a traditional group that hunts at Atterbury north of Columbus in January.  I will be out before dinner tomorrow with my daughters and a buddy.  It's a tradition for us for the last 20 years or so.

I loved the couple times I made it down to the IBA rabbit shoot at Joe's.  Those were some good times.  Going to have to start making the trip to Atterbury now!

Where exactly are you Indians boys located, I'm 30 minutes north of Evansville,
I wouldn't mind getting together and bustin some bunnies once or twice a year with a few trad guys. It would be a blast for sure or should say a fling LOL

BCWV if you are looking for good hound I know of several guys in your area that could probably hook you up with a fine hound, Just let me know and I'll put the word out.

I live in Columbus. Atterbury is just up the road, so maybe I can make it this year.  Joe has said that he would be glad to have a rabbit hunt if there is enough interest.  His property in Switzerland County is loaded with rabbits!

Hey Fellas
I killed all 50 of my snowshoes last year, 14 of them were with my longbow. The rest were with a pistol.
I run a med speed dog and usually only one or two at a time. Its a great time.

Shoot Straight

I went on a snowshoe hunt in the UP several years ago with some Hoosier boys.  Man those white rabbits are just hard to see, let alone hit with an arrow.  I think I would have a hard time killing one with a shotgun.

Oh yea!

Beagles, bows and bunnies just go together!

Best to have fairly slow running dogs and you really need to stay still to try for a shot on one that's doinky-doinking along.  Them bunnies all stretched out going like a blur are tough with a shotgun let alone a bow.  Slow dogs and careful positioning of the hunters helps a lot.

We had a Beagle when I was a teenager we used to hunt snowshoes. She was one of the shorter varieties and not in the best shape, so she was a kind of slow lol. It was more like the dog would gently push the rabbits instead of chasing close behind. Once the Rabbits would get out in front of her a little way they would just hop along and stop periodically to see if the dog was still on their trail. I didn't take a rabbit with a bow while hunting over the dog but took quite a few with the shotgun that were just sitting and would have been easy shots with a bow. Dad shot a few with a bow while hunting over the dog.

Our little group of trad shooters has a bunny hunt every year. More fun than should be allowed in a single day. Just wish we could do it more often!!

I've got some good dogs that can push a rabbit but if I stay put and be still it'll come back around and.... Thump!
Can't wait to give it a whirl this weekend.
We'll have to get together some of Hoosier boys and give it a go.
