I shoot almost all my bows bare shelf, no rest at all. The rug rests are all about equal, best natural material I've found is seal skin. (no I don't know of any source of adult seal skin in the lower 48, it ain't easy to get here)

Fuzzy side of industrial Velcro works well, is cheap and easy to get.

I use the gel filled tennis handle tape they sell in sporting good stores to wrap my handles. Costs under $3 and doesn't get slippery when wet and is warm when the temps drop.

Nope at least not that I, moose, bear or caribou have noticed. In bows I like to remember the kiss principal "Keep it simple stupid" is my mantra.

There may be a confusion of terms here.
When I see "arrow rest" I think of a raised rest of some kind, usually plastic but possibly metal or metal and plastic.
When I see that someone says they are shooting on a "bare shelf" I am assuming that their arrow is resting on the shelf and not an arrow rest, but that the shelf is covered by some kind of material like fuzzy Velcro, sealskin, or a fabric "rug."

Right Now, i have Leather on My Rounded Shelf, and I also use the Shure-Grip! It Helps Me, anyway, get that same Hand Placement. I left a Little Wrinkle that my hand just naturally goes to! Good Luck and Have FUN!!

I use a feather rest on one of my long bows. Looks cool and shoots great. I haven't used it in wet weather yet?
My individual bows and my shooting style kind of dictate the material used.
The rest of my bows have rug or seal skin.....

I use Bear Hair and have been for over a decade. It works for me and I'm sure there are others that are just as good, but I haven't tried them. I tend to stick with what works.
