folks wouldn't do it. I just saw a beautiful bow (won't say which one) I'd love to own in the Classifieds. Maybe it is just me, but I absolutely can't get myself to pull the trigger on a bow with someone else's name on it. I don't consider myself a superstitious person...possibly I am just being silly. :knothead: ;) Anyone else suffer from this malady?
Should probably clarify that...I am referring to a personal name. Someone naming a bow and putting that on there is completely different...that just adds to the character. :archer:
I'm seeing it less and less. It does bother me a little, but if it's a good deal, I wouldn't turn it down just because of that.
Kind'a a kin to wearin' someone elses underwear?
I bought a Black Widow PLV here on the classifieds. It has a name on it and not the person I bought it from, so I am at least the 3rd owner. I've killed two hogs and a deer with it. I never notice the name and couldn't even tell you what the name is unless I get up and go look right now.
I thought it would bother me, but its a non-issue.
If the deal is good and it is a bow you want, buy it!
That being said, when I order a new one, I won't even put my own name on it! Go figure.
John
I gotta say that when I buy a $900 or over bow it had better have my name on it or the bowyer will hear about it. I have shot several bows with other archers names on them. I like the idea of it. I am carrying on the intent of the designer and purchasers desires for the bow. I can't imagine a single hunter who would not want his or her bow to go to another hunter when they have passed on. The tradition and their investment is carring on. It is the ultimate recyling. You get to add to the history of the bow, and your being green.
All you guys who are uncomfortable with bows with other guys names on them, feel free to send them to me. I will read the prior owners names and wonder about their experiences with the bow every time I shoot them.
Names on bows are like snake skins.
I don't like either of them.
I never understood how someone could take a beautiful piece of wood and cover it up with snake skins.
No names on any of my bows, mainly because I know that someday they will be for sale.
John
Doesn't bother me. My favorite bow has someone's name on it, I don't even remember who. Bow still shoots great.
Guy
Wish I had one with Chester Stevenson, Howard Hill, Fred Bear... who knows what names will be looked back on some day?
Shaun,
Give me a call, I'll but anyones name on them. LOL
Mike
Doesn't bother me either. One of my favorites was purchased here in the Classifieds and has a fellow TradGanger's name on it. I cherish it just as much as my other bows.
A few with my name are floating about and I've had bows with other names pass through my hands. Current crop are all nameless. It doesnt really matter much to me.
Its not hard to remove a name.400gr then 600gr automotive sand paper used wet, when its dry give it a light coat of minwax satin spray poly, next day another let it dry for a couple of days then hit it with 0000 steel wool to blend the edges a coat of paste wax on the whole bow and it will look like new...PR
Non Typical, you had to think about that awhile didn't you? Underwear? Hardly. A name is merely part of that bows history...doesn't bother me. And it's the easiest way to buy a $1000.00 bow.....for $500.00 in the classifieds.
If someone thought enough about what they wanted in a bow I'd like to know who it is/was and yes it is part of the bows' history. That makes the bow more special, not less. IMHO
God bless,Mudd
When I order a custom bow I want "Custom made for Dave Lohr" on it. I purchase a bow with the intent to keep it forever. Doesn't always work out that way.
My Thunderhorn has my name on it, and I'll soon be getting my new Brackenbury. It too, will bear my name. I plan to be shooting both until the day I croak.
I have one that says "Custom Bighorn for Gene Wensel". It doesn't seem to bother me, but maybe I should just throw it away. :D
Doesn't bother me a bit. Like Goerge said, if it means getting a $1000 bow for $500 all the better.
Ya, I'd toss it Fletcher.
My PSA has someone elses name on it. Didn't seem to bother the bow, but sure did bother the doe it was pointed at.
I am in the process of buying one right now. The fella whose name appears on the bow is an honorable gent, avid hunter and has given true service to his country and to all of us. I am honored that his name is on something of mine.
I have one bow with "Killdeer" on it. I figure that ten years after I croak out, someone will figure that it is the name of the bow, and allow the weapon to fulfill its intended purpose.
Everybody to their own kick...

I get that...I think it is a bit different if it is someone you know and respect and certainly considerably different if it is someone that is tied into the history/tradition of the sport...who among us wouldn't want a bow with Fred's or Howard's name on it? Surely a different story when it is Joe Schmoe. In pondering it, it is not even the name so much as the implication. This bow has been "crafted especially for_______". " ________" being someone else other than me. No biggee either way...just a random thought I was having when perusing the Classifieds.
BTW: any bow with Killie's name on it would be a treasured keepsake. ;)
I had a Widow PLX that had Biggie Hoffman's name on it...couldn't help but wonder what kinda hunts that one went thru. It doesn't bother me one bit
Well, I have two bows that were custom made for me and they both have my name on them. A couple weeks ago, I pulled a boneheaded move and left my longbow leaning against the side of the SUV and then got in and drove home. Didn't realize until the next morning that it wasn't inside the vehicle.
Well, long story short, about 5:30 that evening I got a call from a man who said his son had found a bow with my name on it and wondered if I wanted it back. For THAT reason alone, I like to have my name on my bows. This bow cost me $480 several years ago, the bowyer is no longer alive and I could not replace it if I'd wanted to. It's very special to me and I'm darned glad to have it back. I'm REALLY glad I had the bowyer put my name on it....
I sort of liked the idea of heritage, the bow passes "down the generations".
If i got a bow with someone elses name on it, i would put my name beneath and maybe in 50 years, there'd be 4-5 archers on there.
Sort of a family tree.
What would also be nice then, is for the first archer to make some notes on the bow/good experiences in a small book, which could be sent with the bow when sold, so everyone writes some notes. For me, that would add to the bows history, and give it more uniqueness.
I have a bow with "Custom Made for Steve Tottingham" (me). Another bow that I ordered my name was mistakenly left off. I was happy to take the offered discount over having my name put on it. Given that most of the bows that say "Custom Made" are not truly custom (ok, you chose the woods, big deal), I now think the first bow looks a little silly with my name on it. I don't know, maybe I'll add "Custom Made for Fred Bear" on my nameless bow! :biglaugh:
I know when I bought Bill Foreman's personal SR Swift "Blackhawk" [and yes it does have a custom grip] I had him "personalize it" for me.
It now says "Bill Foremans personal bow passed along to L.E. Carroll....Happy Hunting"
Pretty special to me and you should see the Cocobolo veneer's he picked to put in that "Baby" :wavey:
You must be passing up some great deals. I just picked up 2 Dale Dye Trails End recurves for the price of a new one. Both have names on them. Great bows, even better deal. I'd like to think of them as bows with a history.
Glad some of you don't like the names on the bows, I get them cheaper that way .
Would you not buy a custom gripped bear take down that Fred wrote his name on the bow handle. come on now ?
It's a legecy of the bow , make and keep memories.
Jack
I lost a bow a few years ago (long story) but luckily the fellow who found it saw my name and did a internet search and called me...I tried to give him a reward but he wouldn't take it. that bow would have been gone without my name on it...
I'm with George, I like getting them cheaper on the classifieds. I'll sand the name off it bothers me that much.
Removing the name is usually quite easy, especially if it has a satin, low gloss finish that is easy to match. Many of the bowyers will do it for a reasonable fee.

Funny...all these replies in favor seem to suggest that every bow with a name is of someone famous, unique, legendary and/or historical to the sport of hunting. Of course I would like a bow with Fred's name on it...just like I said in a previous post. Guess there are absolutely no bows out there with a regular person's name on it. Just a thought...if it really doesn't bother anyone else, how come the sellers are forced to take a much lower price for them? Anyway, I am going back to check the Classifieds...seems like I am missing a ton of bows that with Fred Bear's, Howard Hill's, Jack Howard's, Ben Pearson's, Earl Hoyt's or Ishi's name on it. :readit: ;)
I like to know the history of a bow when I can. I just bought a used one that I tracked down from birth.
She was born & raised in Montana. Then she moved to Wyoming where she didn"t feel very wanted either. She was later transplanted to Jersey but was rejected there also.
But the story ends very well. She's now in Ohio where she is thought very highly of and loved very much.
You just never know where someone is going to land.....Peace
Red Boar asked: " Just a thought...if it really doesn't bother anyone else, how come the sellers are forced to take a much lower price for them?"
I really can't believe you asked that question, when you are the one complaining about a person's name on the bow. Really! The answer is there are people, like yourself, who hate to see someone elses name on a bow, hence they will not pay top dollar for it.
:knothead:
By the way.....I happen to have a bow with Ishi's name on it....signed and dated. I'm just waiting for the ink to dry and it will be ready to go. :p

I sold a Jum Brackenberry "Old Timer" about 4 years ago that had my name on it and sure wish I had it back. Anybody seen it???
Donald
I bought an older bow in good shape made my a high quality known maker. The snake skins on it were old and beat looking so I asked him if he could replace them. He refinished the bow and put on new skins, reshaped the shelf a little, put in a small compass for fun and TOOK OFF THE OLD NAME AND PUT ON IT: CUSTOM FOR ....me....... The point is that althought almost all my other bows are custom to me with my name on them, it is nothing big to take one off an put another on.
Once I bought a bow for me and one for a friend of mine ,when they were ready I drove up the bowyer and saw in made a mistake and he inverted the names on the bows.It took him a minute to cancel the wrong ones and write the corrects. So undesired names on the bows are not a issue at all.Plus for me if I decide to buy a used bow well the old owner's name is part of the history of the bow itself and it is a plus for me or I don't buy a used bow...
I would love to have a bow with a name on it like Fred Bear or Ben Pearson or Fred Asbell... well you know what I mean. Even Barry Wensel or Mike Mitten the list goes on and on.

Nah...not really complaining at all. :) It is not even that big of a deal. It was just a thought I had. Guess I got a little irritated with all the replies suggesting EVERY bow with a name on it belonged to some super famous, historically significant person and why wouldn't I want it. :knothead: Possibly folks are intentionally ignoring the question...I was talking about a regular, unknown, every day guy. Admins can delete the thread with my blessings.
I have had my name put on two bows. Not anymore. I trade bows alot and am not going to take the hit when I sell. It's not like it's a black widow and I can't tell them apart from other bows on the rack :D . No hate mail please, just having a little fun.
I got one with my name mis-spelled on it! (seriously) And I wouldn't change a thing about it! Anyway someones name on there doesn't bother me in the least and I will always have my name put on any new ones I order (hopefully spelled correctly)!
To me it's like not kissing a pretty girl just because her last boyfriend kissed her first. Just think of all the fun you'd be missing! In fact some things get more interesting with a little experience.
Been married quite a good while now and thankful that I figured out which one was for me ... and she wasn't brand-new when I got her. Glad I didn't cull her over a college sweetheart. What was we talking about? Oh yeah, bows! Well ... same point.
I am not sure who said they all have a famous archers name on them. I don't care who's name on the bow. It just doesn't bother me. Like it was said before, it would be like not kissing a girl.......... I would have missed out on a lot of fun and good memories if I worked that way. The name on the bow is part of the bows history, and for me it makes them that much cooler to have in hand.
Bothers me a bunch! I would never buy a bow with someone elses name on it. But, if I absolutely had to have the bow, the name would be off in a pair of skinny seconds. Heck, I have three very high end bows which were made to my specs and I didn't even put my own name on them. Putting your name on a bow to me is like tatooing your girlfriend's name on your arm... not a good idea for a number of reasons. On a more philosophical lever, we don't own any of our stuff, it's just on loan to us while we are here.
I'd be less weird about buying a bow with someone else's name on it than I would be selling one with mine. It's like selling a book that has been autographed to you. I found a Patrick McManus book at a Half Price bookstore that had been autographed to someone else and bought it, but who the heck would sell it?
Same with bows. :-)
Dang, I hate names on bows too! Better go get some sand paper & spray paint :) Doc
