Title: Arrow Weight ?
Post by: 90coupe on November 19, 2009, 12:41:00 PM
Right now I am shooting a Tomahawk 55# at 28" draw 58" longbow. I am shooting 3555 goltip with 5" shield cut and 125 grain tips. I ordered som eof the weight tubes from 3 rivers, which add around 140 grains to the arrow. therfore at 20 yards + my arrows drop dramatically really throwing my groups off. Would you recommend staying with first setup around 400 grains or would you go with the arrows with weights at 540 and just get used to the heavier arrow, and advice would be great thanks.

I would get use to the heavier arrow. I think the 400 gr arrows would be to light especially from a 55# bow. All of my arrows weigh no less than 500 gr.

Kinda answers you own queston seems to me.  ;)  If you plan on hunting I suggest you stick to smaller broadheads with that arrow weight.Other than that I see no problems if they shoot well and you like the trajectory. jmo

400 grains is pretty light for the bow and doesn't carry much penetration with it if you hit a high rib or long angle shot.  I would keep my arrow over 500 grains and adjust your sight picture thru practice.

I would add the weight to the tip to get the grains up. I have some of the same arrows, similar # bow, similar draw length, and need to at least 100 grains more up front to get them to bare shaft or broadhead tune. Try it....I bet it works. Good luck!

Im shootin 53# and using 600 gr. arrows. I was previously at around 640 gr. and was having the same drop off problems

540 is not heavy for a 55# bow. Just right, IMO.

WOW!!!  What bad advise.  How can anyone answer that question without knowing - what your shooting - targets, rabbits, whitetails or moose.

I would assume your asking for hunting whitetails AND the hunting season is going on NOW.  My answer would be get rid of the tubes.  Accuracy is more important than weight.  400 out of 55 lbs is plenty for this season.
