Title: Bighorn Ewe Hunt?
Post by: Izzy on November 19, 2009, 11:23:00 AM
I recently readd about the high odds of drawing a ewe tag in Montana.Has anyone ever put in for one or know anyone who has hunted them? This hunt sounds like a good option to get to hunt sheep without waiting a lifetime to draw.Any info would be much appreciated.

I'm going to give it a shot in Mt if I draw anyways.

There was a recent thread of a bowhunter who shot a bighorn ewe in MT in the first 10 minutes of his hunt in MT, but it was on another site.  PM me for details.

I drew a ewe tag in CO on my second try.  I believe I'm trying for MT ewe this coming year myself....

Saw alot of sheep hunting montana this year for elk. The area I hunted would have been no problem shooting an ewe with traditional equipment. They would let you walk right up to them. Closest I got was 15 yards from a group of 7 ewes lambs. I did see 6 180"+ rams all in a group. Unbelievable they were the same way. Would just watch ya and not run away! Oh course they probly know that I couldn't touch them and that they were safe! Kind of like turkey hunting and having deer look into the blind and vice versa!

I say go for it. We have to draw up here too. In the bow zones it takes a while now. They aren't too tough. The experience in the mountains makes it. The venison is the best. Too bad they aren't bigger. If you ever get to hunt them pretend like you are having a picnic.

There are a few units in MT where you can buy over-the-counter ram tags I believe.  It is a quota hunt and open to all weapons.  I've heard the country makes it one of the toughest hunts in the lower 48.  Lots of grizzly bears in those areas as well...

My friend that use to own a small hunting magazine had tried to talk me into hunting one of the ewe tags(I couldn't afford it at the time). He said it was real good hunt. I have been putting in for cow moose and a nanny goat tag because of odds. I know it may be the only why I can draw those speices here in utah. I say go for it!

The beauty of a ewe hunt is that it doesnt have the usual penalty of not being able to apply for 7 years if you are drawn.  You can hunt a ewe if drawn every year.  It is a good hunt and a great way to get experience sheep hunting while waiting for the ram tag.  Joseph
