Yeaa haaaaw!
Showed up today! Barely started reading it. So far just the forward and stuff but I know it's gonna be a good read.
Thanks Gene.
By the way, kudos for dedicating it to the armed forces.
My favorite books about whitetail hunting. This one coupled with Come November are by far the two best books ever written for the serious whitetailer. Jumping around alot right now. What exactly is he calling a "header". Is this the highest point of a drainage or highest area of a ridge? I probably missed how he uses the term since I've been jumping around! Thanks Gene for giving of your knowledge.
Dave
Got two packages in the mail yesterday: Gene's new book and a new Dale Dye (new to me). Yes, I did unpack the Dale Dye first (I was like a kid on Christmas morning), but I spent most of the evening reading the new book. I had to force myself to put it down and get to bed. Hard to go to sleep thinking about some of Gene's new ideas....the man really makes sense. I'm sure the book will eventually get tattered pages from being read and re-read.
Yes, yesterday was like Christmas!
Ya I was wondering about what is meant by a header..I'm guessing where the ridge or drainage begins?
Man my mail person must be slow. I didnt get mine yesterday and I am closer to Gene than SteveO is!! Hopefully today it will come.
Gene left for the timber again this morning so I'll answer the header question. What we usually refer to as a "header" is the top of a washout (wet or dry) where water has eroded out the ridge side. In otherwords, when you have a ridge, because of the terrain, running water (either from rain or an underground seepage) washes out a slight drainage on the side of the hill. This washout creates a slight obstacle for deer walking across the hillside. Yes, they can cross it wherever they want, but it's a lot easier for them to loop around the top of the seepage rather than having to cross it. The top of the header creates a pinch-point of deer movement. BW
Have had my copy for a few days. Great reading. It is awesome that men with so much knowledge on hunting whitetails are so willing to share. For me, I have been on my own learning this world of deer. A lot of trial an error. My poor husband has to be so sick of moving my stands! He is a great man and does it with a smile everytime:)
I do not know many other deer bow hunters. At least ones that share the same hunting values that I do. I relish the chance to get inside info from someone who has already come up the ranks. It almost feels like cheating! I was in my stand yesterday thinking of what tress to drop as to funnel the deer to me. What time of the year I will clear my trails with weed killer. Watching the wind move the trees. Wondering where my sent is lifting and falling. Love it. This book has opened up a whole new area of hunting whitetail for me. Thanks to Gene for his willingness to share with us youngins in the sport.

You know, speaking of 'headers', I've always caught on to Gene and Barry kind of inventing words they need along the way. It may have been back in their 'The Horse You Rode In On' book, but they were talking about quilted toilet paper having more "gription." :) Well, I was leafing through an industrial/custodial catalog the other day and saw where there is actually a company either called "Gription" or producing gloves by the same name. Wonder if the boys got a royalty from that or had been borrowing it all along. Had to laugh.
Another way to describe his headers might be that you have a valley down below, but several usually dry 'tributaries' (valleys/dry creeks/etc.) that feed down into that dominant valley/creek at the bottom.
I haven't bought it yet....I was concerned by the name that it may be about Gene's dating years or something similar 8^).
OK, so Barry's explained what they mean by a "header", now would he explain what the heck a "crick" is?? They talk about them all the time . . . I figured it was some kind of term they used when they were practicing chiropractors, you know, when you describe a tight or painful muscle in your neck, it is a "crick.":^)
Humorist Patrick McManus explained it best. A "creek" is a small, clear, free-flowing body of water suitable for trout fishing, skinny dipping, etc. A "crick" is a creek after it has been visited by cattle. Sounds like Gene must be hunting a small body of water frequented by cattle.
I got mine in the mail today. It will broke in tonight before shut eye time.
You know, I read quite a bit. I own perhaps/nearly every book on archery and its history back to the 19th century. I love adventure and passion in literary prose. My favorite books are from Howard Hill, Saxton Pope, Aldo Leopold, Sasha Samuel and others..not to mention ....Gene Wensel.
Gene has written his 4th (so he claims) book. It is a re-visit to his 40+ years of whitetail hunting tactics and theory. In all the years I have known gene he has always shot straight from the hip. NO BS and funny. Nothing has changed. It is bare bones no BS "Whitetail Wonderama" at it's best! Got it yesterday in the nmail .. taking it with me on my Wisocnsin hunt next week.
His first book 1984's "Hunting Rutting Whitetails" was a groundbreaking piece that turned whitetail hunting on its ear with regard to hunting the rut.
This book is destined to be a classic like his last three. I encourage all of you to get a copy for your den.
Rich Lopez
Thanks Barry.
Got mine 2 days ago....and I'm in Gawgia...who knows?
You gotta love those "creeks" John!
No luck yet for me! Probably cause I was late sending him a check! Serves me right. Next time I won't delay!
Dont worry man no luck for me either. Hopefully today she will be at home waiting for me.
Who's gonna read it to Biggie?
I got mine the other day and dug into it so much that I actually foregoed sitting in a November treestand to read it! I read the whole thing and am in the process of reading it again. It is a masterpiece. Gene wrote that this would probably be his last book on whitetails. I sure hope this is not true, but appreciate what he and Barry have given us passionate whitetail hunters. I have said it here before, but I read Hunting Rutting Whitetails, and One Mans Whitetail as a youngster and those books really helped shape me to be the type of person I am today. I'm a big music fan, and music can be very influential in a persons life, but no other art form has influenced me as much as these writings. My father does not hunt. He took me deer hunting when I was a kid simply because I was interested in it. It took him awhile to realize it, but he finally seems to understand that my job is simply not worth the money in November. He used to shake his head at me, but I think now he respects and even envys me. What I find the most fascinating about the "Brothers of the Bow" is that their passion for what we love has not wanned in the least bit. Hunting needs more of these type of people, and thankfully a number of them visit this site. I still love to watch "Bowhunting October Whitetails" and fantisize about growing up in rural Montana and hunting big bucks with Gene and Barry. I should also say, that I am grateful that Barry has decided to write a book and share his experiences with us. I can't wait to read that one!
By the way, I thought the art work done by Andrew Warrington was amazing. I can only draw stick figures, and even caveman artists would have laughed at me. Artistic talent is proof that there is a god, since artistic talent has no biological function. Humans may have evolved, as did whitetails, but I certainly like to think that God directed our evolution, and that the whitetail was a gift to us.
WOOHOO! It came in the mail today! Cant wait to dive into reading it!
Mine was in the mailbox today!! It starts this evening..
Thanks Gene.

I had to go to Buffalo on business, I checked the mail on the way to the airport and it was there. I read half on the way up and half on the way back. Can't decide which half was better....
Oh well, back to Sarah Palin......until Barry's book comes.
Got mine last week. Great reading! Was going to try to wait to read it on a train ride to Nevada at Christmas time - but the temptation was to great and I'm half way through it now.
Now that is funny Biggie! Let us know how Sarah's book is :)
Gene this is a swell book. Lots of insights and information from a very "seasoned" (OK, old) bowhunter. Thanks.
I got mine early last week, and as usual when I get a new book- I read the whole thing in a couple hours.....
I read extremely fast, (ticks my wife off when I can read a Patterson novel in 3 hours), but still retain everything I read. This book will be just like my Come November, I'll read bits and pieces all the time.
Its already got me rethinking some of my stand sites- and I did a quick midday visit to one of my spots today, found a very faint trail connecting the far cornfield with my little swamp. I already had a stand set near it- just had to spin the stand a bit in the tree to cover that run. It got me thinking about the 2 small bucks I saw moving through that spot when sitting in a different stand. Gene has a way to make it sound easy- I wish it was for me. Great book, if you don't have it, you better get one.
A great read!! Once again Gene has written a book worth owning and reading again and again!
Awesome!!
Peter Iacavazzi
Finished mine the other day - enjoyed it as I enjoyed "Come November" - I always come away with an image in my head of a story Gene told - this time it was the one when Gene was a kid, rode his bike to trade in his furs in for money and the women screamed (would have loved to see that one).
My wife just gave me my copy, it's a early Christmas present. I started reading last night. It's another good one!
rraming when I read that part in my study hall i just busted out laughing. It made all my friends curious to see what i was reading so I let them see and they all thought it was hilarious too. Now they understand why I read all those hunting books and magazines. lol
Ordered it on Nov.29th.It arrived around lunch today and I finished it about 30 minutes ago.Great tips with some funny stuff throwed in by Gene.I wont spoil it for those that havent finished the book. Thanks Gene.
my wife got tired of hearing me talking about it and out it came last night.Early Christmas.Awesome again, just like the other ones. She said Barrys wmay be aNew Years gift.Thank You Guys so much, and you to sweetie for the early thing.Gene, how was the hunting for ya.I never see any new pic's on Brothers sight
Gene is still trying to close the deal on the last day of the regular archery season in Iowa- today. He has passed more bucks than I have even seen this year. Word on the street is that he is more selective on big bucks, than Tiger is on women. Most of us would take the throwaways from either guy! Good luck Gene!
Don't tell me how it ends. I got to wait to xmas
I`m hoping for it to come for Christmas :D

Amen brother!!
:clapper: :biglaugh:
Great Book! Even better the second time read. A lot of you probably will agree how much our values are exactly the same.
I'm lookin forward to Barry's book- he's obviously a better hunter as he got one this year and Gene didn't. Course there's always the second Iowa season. Good luck Gene.
Best of Gene !!
Really enjoyed the book..
Marty... Marty... you need to ask Santa for a new canoe paddle this Christmas to stir things up. BW
My paddle works just fine Barry, could use your book though, Gene's was such an easy read-I'm finished. Hope yours is longer.
Mine IS longer. bw
When is the Release Date on your book Barry?
I am back home for a while now that the Iowa gunners are doing their thing. We can't handicap ourselves with bows during Iowa gun season so I have two weeks to catch up. I want to thank everyone for the nice comments on the book and apologize for the delays. Once its in the printers hands, we're at their mercy. I have had a lot of fun so far this season and passed up many nice bucks waiting for the right one. Marty, do I have to post a photo of the biggest I let walk (twice)?
Ryan: They've finally got all the high-tech computer problems fixed and have promised me delivery right around New Year's Day. Just in time for people to finish up reading Gene's. If you're a slow reader mine just might get you through until spring turkey season. 8^) BW
Both books will become part of my most treasured bowhunting items. Gene's was a great read and I'm sure Barry's will be just as good.
Sure did like Gene's book. If you've read Come November, you've got the gist of the first half but the cool thing is, he's not to stubborn to say everything he wrote in the past is still gospel. Lots of revisions on past theories and sort of mental editing of what is important to look for. The second half is awesome! Just some great stories, insights and armchair conversation about archery, hunting and the world in general that evidently takes YEARS to figure out. (Gene's a lot older than I am....) :bigsmyl:
Go ahead and post the photo Gene, it will prove the insanity case that Donna is building! Don't forget my quote when I saw the picture!
Marty, I know you can hold your own with the boys, but Gene has some pretty rough video in his possession...
Gene, is this the one that needs another year before he is ripe?

What was he, 12 yards and getting ready for a nap?
Yeah I would have passed on him too 8^).....
Steve-O, Those video's were misses on purpose! See what I mean- what man in his right mind would pass up that buck! He has lost it. I told him it was bein in a bar and Bo Derek in her prime was coming on to him and he said he was busy cause there might be a better looking woman showing up later!!!!
Seriously, I'm proud of Gene for passing him up (on film). Not many guys would let this buck walk at under 15 yards. This is what a world class whitetail looks like when he's 3 1/2 years old. A symmetrical 6x6 in his teenage years is what dreams are made of. Sweet dreams to all. BW
I just hope he had the camera's image stabalizer turned on! Ha! The season isn't over, but he has had a great one so far.... and you too Barry. I hope one day we all get to hunt as much as you guys get to. But, until then, just keep sharing the stories!
Marty--
If we had Jayne Mansfield, Sophia Loren, and Raquel Welch waiting in the cafe less than 40 yards down the street, Bo Derek at the bar would be a little easier to pass up
I like that, a lot... My esteem of Gene just went up a notch, like the man needs my approval, lol... Passing up a nice buck like that is commendable. I find myself wanting to pass on deer that I would have killed without a second thought 20 years back... Let 'em grow, the sign of a mature bowhunter. And I mean that in a most flattering way..
Steve-O: Jayne Mansfield, Sophia Loren and Raquel Welch??? We're you around six years old at that time? BW
Man you guys that have those caliber of bucks to hunt are some lucky dudes.
Sorry brothers...I'm still on the only one that's got her 'sleep number'. :biglaugh:

(Inside Joke) ;)
Uncle B--I was considering my audience...they should be right in Marty's wheelhouse.
Plus, quality like that crosses ALL generations!
And they say Texas has the biggest Bucks. That's crazy..Talk about control..Good for you guys to have the op..You will be rewarded..
That O must not stand for Osceola! Ha! My wheelhouse all right!
I balance out these guys- I've been known to premature release around animals like that! You figure out which ones.
How about Farrah Fawcett?
Gene, thank you for autographing one of the books for me, just started reading the book and I like it alot. Waiting for Barry's.
Terry
I've got to hand it to you Gene, the last chapter is so spot on it is scary (I re-read it again last night). I hope a lot of our younger folks read (and re-read) that chapter.
It's great to read a book that echo one's own sentiments! Thanks again Gene for a great book!
Barry- Steve O is into Older women like Gene is into older bucks, that's all. I heard he couldn't even sneak into a gym for a shower without getting caught- how's he gonna outsmart an older buck?
Holy cow! I just couldnt do it Gene. Passing that one up. But then again, few people would look at that buck and think 3.5 years old since he is already carrying so much headgear. But I hope to get to that point when I reach your age. What's the scoop with Tyrone? Have you seen him this year? Hopefully he is still around! I'm buckless this year, but have had an excellent season. Passed up many young bucks and had a few close calls with a really great one. I shot a beauty of a 5x5 but the arrow just glanced down the rib cage or shoulder. Steeper angle than I thought when I took the shot. I saw him the next day and he appeared to be fine. Thankfully.
Boys...I dont know what the big deal is...I pass up super models all the time...Of course I learned all I know from Gene and Uncle B.
But...I'm just that way.
Petey
Please tell that big ten from 11-22 is "ripe " enough
Terry, notice how our stomachs give your bride more of an hour glass figure :>)
Steve is making me look like a man of steel. I did pass up that biggest buck but only because he was over forty yards. Most high tech guys would have tagged him but thats okay with me because they didn't.
Jon, Tyrone is dead. He strayed too far on November 6. Sad but true.
Barry,
I think Steve's saying those deer have "real racks." Much like the names he mentioned.
It's hard today to find three beautiful famous women who haven't been "enhanced."
I give you "The Pam Anderson"
