Michael
A question for you Tim. What brand of drilling jig is that one you are using?
Very cool! It is amazing to watch a true craftsman at work.
Great Stuff thanks.
First, :bigsmyl:
Great thread! Thanks Tater
I love Tim's bows , class all the way , I love the 3 piece treesick!!! and the 60 inch longbow..must have on any archers list! Mark
Got some questions...how do you keep the glue up pieces in the riser in place when applying pressure to them? The glue makes them slip around a bit for me until the full pressure is applied...do you know what I mean?
Also is that a 1" dowel sander you are using for the yoke of the grip?
Thanks, David
Wow!!!!
Hope to have more pics next week. I'll also follow up with Tim to make sure that the few questions posted get answered.
Happy Turkey Day!
Michael
David,I just clamp the center 1 st and work out from there in both directions trying to keep the pressure equal as I go.
Mike,I don`t know what brand center jig I use,I`ve had it a long time, but I`ll check and see if it has a brand name on it.I got it apx. 17-18 yrs ago from John at Old Master Crafters for about $40 bucks.
I hope this helps guys.
I sent Tatersalad about 50 more pics today.I`m sure he will post them when he gets a chance !!!!
Thanks again,Tim--Acadian Woods
:wavey:
Try this site its call a dowel jig http://www.woodcraft.com/ HELPER
As Tim promoised above....here comes another batch of pics. This batch is mainly Tim working/sculpting the riser. It shows some close work on the different sanders and some real close work on the grooved /ridged shelf area and how it takes a healthy amount of hand work.
I've quote Tim below:
"I really enjoy this stage of sculpting the riser. They`re all a little different and a joy to watch as they come alive and turn into a beautiful piece of functional art".
Well it's pretty obvious he loves what he's doing. You don't build something that pretty just for money! You got truely love it. Enjoy!

Only a few more steps left....final limb tillering, adding the antler burr limb bolts (hopefully we will get to watch Tim make them), adding the antler tip overlays, adding some final limb overlays, finish sanding, applying the finish, and adding the leather grip.
Looks like i'll have my bow before long....I'm guessing i'll have to post some pics of her on her maiden hunting voyage..and when she draws first blood!
Hope everyone is enjoying this as much as i am. I got about 300+ pictures of a stack of wood and fiberglass turning into a beautful bow by one of the worldest finest bowyers!

Michael
Awesome work!
Wow thanks so much for sharing those pics.I now know why Im a salesman and not a bow builder."No Talent"
Dewayne
Ready for more.
Tim, This is just what I like to show people who want to know why a true custom made bow cost as much as some do...I for one appreciate the time you guys put into these bows and with the price of materials and certain woods really wonder how you can put bread on the table...I know it has to do with really loving the true meaning of building it with the hands "God" gave ya and at times when ever I get out in the shop and make arrows, strings or even a new leather wrap on my bow I sit back and wonder now how did I ever learn such a craft and I give the praise's to "He" who created me...Man I don't know how you can do such pretty work and details with those "Giant Paws" you have but keep it comeing and Thank You for showing us all the hard work that go's in to a bow...God Bless, Keefer's <")))><
Alright...fianlly a few more pics..Tim had a little trouble matching my limb weight with the first set of limbs..so he built another pair. Got perfect this time. Here are a few pics of the second set of limbs and Tim putting on the Moose horn tips!

Should have some more pics tomorrow...Tim expects to finsih the bow this weekend. I'll post some more pics of the additional limb overlays, antler limb bolts, Tim appling the finish and leather grip!
Take care
Michael
What Keefer's said regarding the "custom vs production" thread that's running on the PowWow..could not be more true. Having built several bows my self and knowing the hours it took me to build a bow that ends up 1/3 as nice as a custom bow...its a wonder these guys stay in business.
Assuming 10 - 15 hours of labor to build a custom bow (in my case it took me about 20 hours on average) and the cost of wood/fiberglass...lets assume $150 in materials (proably on the low end given the costs of highend materials these days), and ignoring the cost of equipment and its maintenance (replainc blades, belts, etc)...they way i see it these guys are getting paid less than $57/hour.
Cost per hour = $1000 (Cost of bow) - 150 (cost of materials) = $850/15 (hours to build a bow) = $56.67!!!
Now lets put that into context...lawyers bill anywhere from $150 - $1,000/hour...and they sure don't give you a beautiful bow at the end of their 8 hour day...for roughly the same cost!
So where am i going with this....Support your Bowyers!!!.....Thanks Tim!!!!
Michael
A great thread and beautiful bow!
Thanks for sharing
Michael, thank you for your kind words and support !!!I really enjoyed building your bow.It will be ready to pick up sometime next week and mean while,I`ll send more pictures as it gets completed. Thanks again !!!
Keefer,I could`nt agree with you more.I thank GOD every day for all his wonderfull blessings that he continues to give me every day.
It truly is Magic to me also to build and create these beautiful bows all the time asking GOD,how can I make these better.I look at the completed bows and think there`s no way,but building these things is a continuous refining of ideas and methods that is just simply has to be directed by GOD.
I truely hate to send some of these bows out to my clients being selfish and wanting to keep them here to just admire and maybe show someone that happens to come by for a visit.
I`m sorry to run on too much about this calling of mine ,but I see treads from time to time about the cost of ,or how long it takes to build this bow ,or that bow and I`ve really got to say that for me ,it`s definately not about the money. The ugly reality is that we all have to have it to get along in this world and I know that there`s been lots of other jobs that could have made me lots more of the green stuff, but my wife and I have really enjoyed and embraced this bow building buisness for going on 18 years now.
Thanks again,Tim------Acadian Woods
Tim, you are a man after my own heart. I get in building a bow and asking Jesus what I should do next. Its just awsome having God show you . He gave me all my bow designs and as David said he teaches my hands to war. He gets all the glory and I have most of the fun. I glorify God in everything I do and he makes it all work. Its just an awsome thing and I apprecieate you saying what you just said. It makes me feel great to know that someone else was taught by God and knows it and glorifys him in it. I have always admired your work. Now I know Why ,. God Bless Steve
Amen

GREAT THREAD,, Looks like shes gonna be a perdy one.
great bowyer! the first really nice bow I ever owned was one of Tim's 1 piece tree stick longbows...a most excellent bow!

Bob
Damn, beautiful work. He moves gracefully for a big man.
Ok...just a few more posts before i get my bow.
Let's see where we left off...how about some limb base overlays and horn limb bolts.
Here is Tim turning a antler into a limb bolt. Notice a few tricks he uses...adding extra surface area on the bolt head to adhere better to the expoxy and the little holes he dremels into the inside of the hole to keep the bolt head from spinning loose.

Almost done with the antler limb bolts...see the next set.
One more close up of the holes he drills inside the horn bolt to make sure it doesn't come lose.

Man, that bow is going to be too purty to hunt with! :saywhat:
Mike
No chance Tim!! You'll have to pry it out of my dead hands! LOL.
Can't wait for the pics!!
Mike - you bring up a good point...I'll just have to be extra careful and only hunt with it on pretty days (no rainy day hunts for this bow...at least not for the first few years).
Thanks
Michael
Thread of the year. Great Job Tater
Simply stunning! Can't hear anyone complaining about the price of bows on this thread.
Simply amazing!
As we say in Norway
"Jeg tar av meg hatten, og bøyer meg i støvet"
(I take off my hat, and bow down in the dust)
Stunning!
Sorry guys,I got busy and did`nt get the pics today, but promise to get some in the morn.
Thanks again and Merry CHRISTMAS !!!!!!!!!
I think I gotta have one! I can't remember a thread being more entertaining! Great job!
Can't wait for the final pics! I'm not too sure I'd have a grip wrap installed on that riser. It looks perfect without one.
Still amazed at Tim's work!
Thanks guys...I'm glad you are enjoying the post.
Tim's work is pretty amazing! Thanks again Tim for indulging me on the build along...I know a lot of other guys would not have taken the time to indulge a customer on a request like this...so my hats off to you Tim!
Michael
I need to try one of Tim's bows. One of the few out there I have not shot. His bows are "working art"
Im with you on that one Irish, Tims bows are just that, working art. There was on in my specs for sale a few months back and am still kicking myself for not jumping on it.
Great build along, and thanks again Tim for taking the time to walk us through, I have really enjoyed it!
Tim how thick are those overlays on the limb butts? How do you keep the glue from squeezing out so you dont have to sand later and loose the sharp lines of the overlays?
Merry Christmas to you all down there. CS
Well..i hate to say it but she's done! I have a few picks of Tim applying the leather grip (almost to pretty to put on top of the cocobolo riser...its really pretty...the pics don't do it justice)
Enjoy.

I would like to express a big THANK YOU to Tim for taking us on such a wonderful ride. Could not deal with a nicer fellow. Tim you earned a customer for life! Thanks for everything and good luck with your surgeries..hope you recover soon!
Thanks all for watching this post...I've really enjoyed it and got a really nice bow at the end.
I'll be in the tree with her the day after Christmas and will post a few pics of her when she draws first blood!
Michael
WOW!!! Beautiful!!!! :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy:
That's a real nice one, and thanks for sharing the build along.
I love my Tree stick and know you will love yours. Don't forget to order the long bow limbs instead of another back up bow. It's great when traveling you basicly have a back up bow. Enjoy
Greg
Awesome job! super bow! thanks for taking us along.
Bob
Truely amazing bow. I would have such a hard time taking such a work or art into the woods as I'm such a clutz. I'd cry when it got it's 1st scratch...
Take care of her and hope you draw that blood soon!
Tim,
You are truly one of the best at your craft. Awesome looking bow. You make it look to easy. Great job! Ken
WOW!!!
Awsome thread! Thanks for taking the time to do it. I admire craftsman like Tim. He does great work!

Thanks Tim for taking your time to let us ride along and see how it's all done...I for one will say I appreciate you taking the time to take the pics...Making bows is a very costly job with all the equipment needed such as forms, power equipment, bonding agents, dust collecters and the list can go on and on...Next time someone says "You paid HOW MUCH for that " I can say Well if you only knew what went into the guy making it and It hardly put food on his table...God Bless Tim and Tater for letting us watch! Keefer's <")))><
Nice.I think back when I had my Classic recurve. Tim makes a nice bow.
I would love to have the patience, talent and gift to build a bow like that.
Well..its offical she shoots as good as she looks. I've put a few 100 arrows through her already and she can really sling them.
Tim - All i can say is well done! The bow looks and shoots like a dream!
Michael
very very nice!
What an amazing transformation of raw materials into a fully functional work of art!
Tim, you have a real gift. :clapper:
Great looking bow.
Just curious how long of shelf life with the leather built in rest.Kip
I beautiful bow and great thread build along,I really enjoyed watching the start to finish, thumbs up!
Beautiful bow !!!!!
Thanks for taking us along on the journey.
What an excellent looking example of perfection! The only thing I would have done different is leave the grip free of the leather wrap. Is this one of the 925 dollar bows or did you add more options? I really enjoyed reading this thread! Many thanks to you and the bowyer.
Thanks a BUNCH for all the kind words and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL !!!!!!!!!!
Tim---Acadian Woods
WOW !!!!! Awsome Tim, I cant wait to get my tree stick. If you want to do anything different to mine, just go nuts and send me the bill.
Merry Christmas
Darren
Great post! This helps everyone who says, "custom bows are too pricey" understand that they really aren't! This thread shows the many, many hours of hard work and skilled labor that go into a nice bow and that a good bowyer earns what little pay he gets for his passion. My hat's off to you, Tim.
Well done, sir! :clapper:
Tim's a great guy who makes a top-notch bow!!
Great looking bow.
Awesome Tim. That is just to darn beautiful man!!!
Great thread!
I was thinking that this thread would be good to add to the How to - Resources section....for future referrence.
How does one go about moving a post to another forum page?
Michael

That about sums it up nicely, well said.
Thank you all so very much for all your kind words. I really do appreciate them all. Makes my day and has lots to do with why us crazy Bowyers do this stuff. It`s one thing to build a bow every now and then, but something a quite a bit different to do this custom stuff on demand on a commercial basis. Building a specific bow design that is built with selected materials, to be used in a specific place, built to a specific poundage at a given draw length and blended together to be visually pleasing and tuned so that both limbs pull together in unison is a challenge that I really enjoy. One limb being ever so slightly weaker than the other to produce perfect arrow flight can be tricky. These bows also have the longevity to be passed on to our Great Grandchildren !!
I`m truly thankful for all the Blessings that GOD has given me and carried me through all these years and lead me forward in perfecting my craft.
Tim-----Acadian Woods
Well said Tim and we really do appreciate your God given talents! Thanks for sharing them with us.
Ohhh yeah....it should come as no surprise to you but the bow shoots great!!!!!!!!!!!!! My groups are tighter than ever and am really liking the grip.
I took her (the bow) on her maiden voyage this past weekend. 3 hunts and didn't see a deer. Sure glad i had such a pretty bow to stare at or i might have got bored.
Hopefully this weekend my luck will change and I'll get to exerise those beautiful limbs. I'll send pics if i get lucky.
Also, let me know if you want any pics of the bow for your web page. I took a few with the bow sitting on my bear rug and the riser really jumps out sitting on a black background.
Take care.
Michael
Thanks a bunch Michael!!! I`m glad its working for you and I sure hope you let the air out of one this week end.
Thanks again. It`s been my pleasure working with you !!!!!!!!!!
Take care,Tim----Acadian Woods
Amazing!
Thank You for a great post! That is a beautiful bow!
