Title: Recommendations please.....
Post by: Scott Bradford on November 17, 2009, 06:29:00 PM
After much consideration and my love for archery and having shot compound bows for 13 years I am getting ready to buy my first recurve bow.
I have narrowed it down to two bows, the PSE Blackhawk and the Greatree Volcano.  Starter bows, but I have got to start somewhere.

I am getting it in a 45# draw weight. My draw length shooting a 55# recurve is about 26 and 1/2 inches.

The only difference I can tell in these two bows other than about an 75.00 price difference is the Greatree is 58" long and the Blackhawk is 60" long.

Any opinions and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Drawing 26 1/2" @ 45#, either bow length should be fine. Since I don't know anything about either of the bows you mentioned, I shouldn't give an opinion.

They are both handsome bows. I have not shot either model.

You said that you wished to get a 45# bow. Is that at your draw length? You draw the same length as I, and I find that a hair over 50# @ 28" gives me 45# when I reach anchor. I hope this helps, and that you enjoy whichever bow you decide on.

If You have shot both, which one do You like better? That would be the one I would get.

The Volcano is the shorter of the two and is a great shooter.  I had one after they first appeared here in the USA and was impressed with how it shot.  If I'm not mistaken, it has ash limbs under the clear glass, and the ones I've shot have all been good performers.  That probably has more to do with the design than the wood, but you know how we archers are 8^).

Right now I have a Red Stag T/D that shoots incredibly well.

I have shot both and the Greatree is the better bow. It's fast, stable and surprisingly well built for the price. My 50#er was my "Go to" bow till my son threw it off the loft onto our tiled kitchen floor. It now has a crack in the riser and since it was a gift from the wife I'd rather have it as a wall hanger than have the crack spread more, besides I have lots of bows.
