Title: Picking a recurve?
Post by: EpicBowman on November 17, 2009, 12:57:00 AM
Hello all,

I recently bought an older Bear recurve off **** and had a great time shooting it until the lower limb cracked on me. I was even getting pretty good. My local shop tells me its finished.

For now, I'm just going to continue shooting at targets, possibly moving towards hunting soon and I want to buy a good recurve. I would like to spend around $200. Although I'm just shooting at targets, I still want to get one with a natural wood look to it. I don't really like the "competition" ones I've seen. Also, I don't think I want one that breaks down, but am not as concerned with that one.

Is it possible to get a new recurve like I'm describing for that price? Any and all thoughts/advice/information are greatly appreciated!!

There are a lot of nice used recurves for sale these days, although it will be a challenge to find one for $200.  Watch the classifieds and you might just get lucky.  I have seen a few sell in the $225-$250 range that were very servicable bows.  Once in a while one of Kent Ostrem's bows or a 1 pc Check Mate come up and they are often a good buy.  Also, lesser known bowyers bows sometimes sell very inexpensively.
Even though they don't have clear glass on the limbs, most old Bears have wood risers and shoot great!  I have a few that I bought from $175 -$250 that are just gems...and shoot almost as well as most of my very expensive bows.
Good luck on your search!

Claudia

That's so funny because I just ordered the Samick Volcano.  On a previous suggestion, I checked out a few places, found the Volcano and he definitely has the look I want. After an hour of research, all the reviews were absolutely glowing and I couldn't be more excited.

Quick follow-up question:  I bought a RH 40 # bow. Can I later put higher weighted strings on this bow, or is each bow made specifically for the # string specified when its bought.

Finally:  What did you do or would you suggest I do to "set-up" the bow once I get it?  While reading reviews I saw quite a few posts where people described different accessories, etc they put on their Volcano. Thanks.

Try to find a good old Howatt Hunter. They have that good wood grain look, they are good shooters and most are in your price range.

Thanks Outwest.
Hopefully I'm as happy with the Volcano as I think I will be.
