Title: gut shot ?
Post by: huntman on November 16, 2009, 10:28:00 PM
Is there a chance the meat would not taste good or be bad on a gut shot deer?

I shot a buck and didn't find it till the next afternoon, unfortualely it was warm and the deer was no good. If you can get them in a reasonable time I think most deer will be alright.

Depends on temp and how long it took you to find and dress it. Remember you have a responsibility to recover the deer whether you think it may have gone south or not!

A friend recently returned from a hunt in Minnesota where another party had put arrows in 3 animals and only recovered one of them. He found one of there bucks bloated within feet of the main trail leading to camp. In my opinion you arrow a deer that's your deer for the season, period!

Please disregard if you behaved responsibly and recovered your deer as soon as you could, there is a good chance I'm misreading the reason behind you post, if so my apologies I've just seen way to much unethical behavior in the field lately.

Yea ya got to hate field dressing those gut shot deer but no harm done just wash him out with a water hose or lay him in a creek to wash him out. And oh yea stay upwind.  :biglaugh:

I did not think the meat would be bad but im from tx. & the deer i shot was from kansas. The ground up meat meat tasted different, maybe its from all the soy beans they eat. The deer was a troghy of a life time, rough score 208, with 7" base 21 total pts. over an inch. My bow got sent back to bob morrison & had to use my compound instead of my recurve thats why i never did post pics.

The only thing ive noticed is the tenderloins are pretty much ruined. Not the backstraps but the little tiny filets inside the body cavity. If they've been marinating in gut contents for any legnth of time especially a messy one left overnight they go to the dog. Never noticed any real difference in the rest of the animal tho.

Use gutless method & you have no worries! As long as meat is tended too before spoiling. Just remove all quarters & backstraps & misc. scrap for burger & you're good to go! Leave the guts inside where they belong! (grin)
