Title: Rainy Day Buck
Post by: BMOELLER on November 15, 2009, 05:13:00 PM
If ya'll happened to see my thread "Shot a Double" a week and a half ago, I stated I was in a managed hunt here in K.C.  Well its still going on and Tom Porter, Dave Poore, and myself hunted this weekend with a few sightings, except for Tom who found an untapped resource.  Not much was moving the whole weekend for me.  Today I got set up in my treesaddle an hour before light and had laid a estrous scent trail on the way in as well.  A coyote was alarm barking probably after crossing my trail and kept barking up and down my ridge for 20min.  Finally he shut up.  It was really windy and out of the NE.  Nothing stirred early on, and then a light rain began to fall around 8:00am.

I was starting to get cold and wet, and thought I would try to stick it out till 9-9:30.  The rain quit but still nothing showed.  I tried the can and a few grunts to no avail.  The rain started again so I told myself 8:45 I was calling it a day.  8:40 came and I decided to get crazy on the grunt tube before getting down.  I let out some really loud long aggressive grunts and put the tube away.

I just got it in my pack, when I looked up the brushy field edge and a buck pops out. I spun around in the saddle to keep the tree between him and me.  He came trotting in from 150yrds and stopped about 30yrds licking his lips taking in the scent I laid down. He also was looking around for the buck that made the grunts.  I was ready for a 25yrd shot if he turned and came into the scent, but he decided to keep coming down the trail putting him to my left where some trees would block his view of me drawing.  At a steady walk, he went behind a small oak with the leaves still on.  I made my move and drew the chekmate h2 back and held.  When he cleared I thought about stopping him with a maaa, but didn't.  I let the arrow go, and drilled him just in front of the crease.  Complete pass through. He bolted into the brush and all was quiet.

I immediately text Tom who was at home doing Honeydo's   "[dntthnk]"   and let him know the good news.  Then gave Dave a call who was sitting it out at home     as well. Got down and went to the arrow

Congratulations Brian!

As slow as things have been, this didn't look like too bad of a day to miss.

Yeah, Tom it wouldn't have been bad to sleep in.  I think they're moving now.  Rain kinda quit at the house and I stepped out and saw a small half rack six eyeballing my deer target.  Looked like he had love in his eyes.

Good blood at the arrow, and it was coated.  Can't really see it by the pic.  Anyhow, blood didn't really pick up till about 8yrds from the arrow. I decided to just go the way he did and finally found some sign.

it also started to rain pretty good.  I felt a little panic in me, but by the way the shot looked he had to have folded up pretty quick.

It was raining pretty good and I was getting soaked so I guess I forgot to get some better hero pics.  I got home and thought I'd seen this buck before.

I need to thank Dave Poore for coming out there in the rain to help pull the deer out on his cart. I owe him and Tom Porter a drag out sometime.

Autopsy revealed he died of cold carbon and a Magnus Stinger 4 blade right through the heart.

Great job Moeller!  Sometimes it just feels right.  I'm going out Friday afternoon and all weekend to try and tag myself a doe or a couple.
