Today was the opening day of general firearms season here in VA. Sounded like a good day to fill my last buck tag.
I had a doe with a crippled leg coming by at 40 yards. I was hoping to kill her, but she wasn't close enough. She was just getting past me when this guy showed up trailing her....however he was skirting the edge of the wood lot where I was set up.
He stepped out at about 15 yards, and I managed to make a perfect shot. He only made it about 50 yards before piling up.
He is not one of the big boys that show up around my spot every once in a while, but it sure is hard for me to be a "trophy" hunter when something like this gives me such an opportunity, especially now that gun season is under way!
Shot him with my Silvertip 50@27, Axis FMJ, and Snuffer SS. Had a complete passthrough.
I'll get better pics tomorrow.

great job allen
You need to play the lottery, filled all your tags Nice, And a trophy is what you see it to be. The hunt for any deer can make that animal a trophy!
Awesome! Congrats. on a great season!
Great job!
AS GOOD JOB!!!!!!!! your having a good season! If killing deer was a crime you would be on death row!!!!!!!
What a way to tag out! Congratulations. :clapper:

Thanks guys! I still need to thin out a doe or two. I guess I can really concentrate on them now!!

Oh trust me, this IS a trophy to me! I went for many, many years (while living in W VA) never even seeing a deer like this!
Congrats!!
Way to go Allen-glad someone is having a good year. Nice buck!
Well done. Congrats.
Nice Harvest!!

LOL I see this! I might just have to suck it up and drop that 5 lbs
:biglaugh:
Good work
Nice job Allen- what FMJ are you using- I just got some 400's I was hoping to use on a critter.
Bill
Bill, I'm shooting the 500's cut to 28". With the 125 gr Snuffer SS, they weigh right at 420grains.
They sure are nice shafts.....but they can be bent if you punish them. I have managed to bend two of them shooting deer this year. I also managed to straighten them perfectly...just like you would a crooked cedar shaft. I was pretty impressed.
Allen
I am planning to use the 400's with 225 up front cut to 28.5 inches, hope they work. Sent you a pm
Bill
I may try some next year with some added weight up front...not sure why though, these seem to be working great!!
Alan,
That is a fine trophy and you are having another great year. Congratulations to another straight shooting lefty!
Hey Allen.......Man o man it's like work trying to keep up with you! :saywhat:
Congrats again for a beautiful buck and a fantastic season! Looks to me like all your bows are getting a workout. Every photo's gotta a different bow!
Does your wife know how many bows you really have?? :jumper:
Nice!
Tim....SHHHH.....I'm thinking of ordering a new one.....not quite sure how to break it to her! :bigsmyl:
I'm sorry Mrs. Shafer.
Well-done!

Way to go Allen. Where do you get the pink fletching? Been thinking of trying some. Don
Don, I got the pink feathers from a local shop. I used up all he had, or I would pick some up and send to you. I have bought them in the past from Sipsey River.
They are pretty bright, but I think I see the Flo. Yellow ones beter when shooting at a deer.
Allen,
Congrats on a dandy buck. I hunted over the weekend and obviously missed seeing this thread until today.
You're having a great season.
Thanks Billy! I've really had a few great days in the field this year!!
