So I just bought my first Hill about 2 hours ago. A 66" Wesley. Boo limbs, bocote riser and tips, and brown glass.46@28 which should make it about 50lbs for me. I'm pumped! How old would Howard be today? Hopefully it will see action tomorrow.
Good for you! Have fun!
Well, I believe I have it now.
How about Howard's birthday? Anyone? (http://i153.photobucket.com/albums/s220/osta-doc/ws4.jpg)
Grats on the new bow - you know we must see it. :-D
He would be like 107 or somethin i think someone correct me if im wrong
Very nice!
I only shot it for about 30 minutes before I decided that it was going home with me.
I picked it up from FlyinCedar here at Tradgang. I think it's gonna be one of my favorites.
Just hope to put her to good use.
And if I did the math correctly, Howard was born 110 years ago today.
Enjoy it Irish!
I saw it for sale, and if I had the money right now you would have had to beat me to it! I would have loved to have that one!
Congratulations!
What a perfect bow!
John
He would be 110. He was born Nov. 13th 1899. Happy birthday Howard.
You'll enjoy your Hill. I a Wesley. and it is a joy to shoot. Congrats, and enjoy!
Tim
I just got one too. Mine shows some superficial battle scars but is a real nice shooter. I've had Northern Mist and Big River interpretations of the Hill style bow but never an original until now. The one I have is 70" and has a Myrtle riser and black glass. Real smooth drawing and sweet shooting bow at my 30" draw.
Have a great time shooting it,I love shooting my Hill's.There is just something about shooting Hill bows for me.
I guess I was just kinda feeling magical tonight when I was shootin it.
I'm really not a good instinctive shooter, but one four arrow group at 20 yards could have been covered up with a silver dollar.
I just could not believe it. I'm sure that tomorrow I'll come back to reallity with my sub-standard groups.
And, on average, where do you brace these Hills at?
This is currently at 6" even. What do you think?
This thing doesn't have a scratch on it anywhere.
6.75" to 7", or something like that.
68" bow braces at 6 3/8", so go from there to find the sweet spot for your setup. That's a nice one you got there - enjoy!
Ken
The start of a great relationship! Hill shooters find the connection w/Howard almost as satisfying as the simple elegance & performance of his bows. Just received another 66" Big 5 which shoots like magic. It's a perfect weight for me. (Much obliged Rick!) Can't put it down. Welcome to the club.
So do most of you use fast-flight or B50?
And, if some of you could post some photos of your favorite Hills on here, I'd love to see them......IA :jumper: :jumper: :jumper:
I use a 6 strand 450plus.
I will get some pics of my Cheetah :)
Glad to hear your enjoying your Hill.
Ken
My instructions from Craig read as follows: "The conventional model 70" longbow should be braced at 6 3/4" fistmele as a starting point. For shorter bows the brace height should be reduced by 1/8" for every 2" of bow length (i.e., 68" bow should have a brace of 6 5/8"; 66" bow=6 1/2"; 64" bow=6 3/8"; 62" bow=6 1/4", etc.)" There you have it right from the man who makes them. ;)
I'm just flat out jealous !
I had a bunch of Hill bows and especially Wesleys. They are great bows with a good cast.
Shoot a heavy arrow, they love them. I was shooting between 11 and 13 grains per pound. They feel like a different bow with a heavy arrow. I did some testing though a chrono with the Wesley against some fast flight recurves at the same weight. When the arrow got heavy the two shot the same. When the arrow was light the reucrve won.
Enjoy the longbow, it can be adicting.
Looks great - I hope you perforate many whitetails with it!
I use B-50 Flemish on mine on my Halfbreed - the 15 strand one that 3Rivers sells.
Did you ask for pics? Why certainly!
Here's one of Chili Maker posing with a groundhog...

I stand corrected David. I never got a manual for mine just what i'd heard.
Ken
Great looking bow! Hope she brings you many a season of joy and shooting. Howard really new his bow business!! :clapper:
Well I didn't make it out today because of house duties but tomorrow I'm going huntin'.....Yes I am.
I'm still waiting for all of those Hill photos everyone.
T.W.,

Dacron string, by the way, Irish.
Make sure you check out www.howardhillshooters.com. (http://www.howardhillshooters.com.) They have a lot of great info about proper brace height, hand placement, etc, etc, etc. They also have an email list you should try joining where entusiast talk about all of these things pertaining to HH bows.
Cool! I love those real longbows!

That's what a young, dumb one looks like anyway. The fletching on the head is optional but recommended to mask head trauma (couldn't get a broadhead through the sticks to get him but an Ace Hex Head to the head worked).
Ben,
Great pictures. Is that a bocote riser? Nice looking bow.....Keep'em coming boys.
A few I own or have owned. My favorite right now is a Shultz!

The next generation preparing for his Hill bow!

Yep, Irish, it is bocote. SpankyNeal, that ebony looks great!
Yes, I agree with SpankyNeal. When I got my Wsley, I called Howard Hill Archery and was told to start at 6 3/8 as a begining point. I really like mine and wish I could afford a couple more. Yours looks really nice. I think you will enjoy it.
Well, my plans fell through again today as far as hunting goes, but I did loose a few here at he house. It was really warm here today.
I believe that I'm really going to like this Wesley. I appreciate you all posting photos of your Hills. I like to see all of the options because I'm already thinking of my next one.
One more thing,
How many of you have a Hill T/D? I drive an old truck that has a standard cab and it sure would be nice to be able to store one behind the seat(out of sight) someday.
Do they shoot the same the same as the one-piece. I've asked this before but it's been a while back and didn't get too many responses.
Thanks.
Thanks Ben! I really like the ebony with black glass. A guy posted one not long ago on here that he ordered that had a Chechen riser with black glass and elk hide grip - boy what a beauty! I think that will be my combo for the Big 5 i'm planning next.
All the best with that Wesley Irish! Just remember that Hill's are addictive! :bigsmyl:
Ken
No difference in the way the takedowns shoot as long as you can get on with one of the two sizes of grips. If the wide, straight grip doesn't work for you then you'll have to stick with the one-piece bows.

love my straight end longbows !!!!!
and as for strings ... i started with dacron ... tried fastflight and last year returned to dacron ... cheaper too !!!!!
enjoy ya Hill mate !
best
ben
Spanky, the grip on this one is fairly deep from back to belly, but tapers from wide at the back to thinner at the belly.
Maybe that T/D grip would not be too much different.
longshot, those are some nice photos. Looks like you've been busy. Good shootin' :goldtooth:
Irish , i've had a few t/down Hills . the grips are bigger and rounder . i found them really comfortable and they are built like a tank !
also check out Belcher bows as they are using the socket locket system i believe .
but gee those t/downs are handy .
regards
ben
One last time for some more photos.
I have a Tembo TD and the handle is wider and more round but not difficult at all to get used to and you just can't torque that grip if ypou try :) The circumference on mine is 5 1/2 inches. I picked this bow up on a trade and it is the best shooter in my Hill line up actually....Dave
This is the last time up for a T/D in central Ohio to try out, then we'll let it go.
