Title: Aging my PSA X osage widow
Post by: joevan125 on November 13, 2009, 10:48:00 AM
Hey guys is it ok to leave the bow unstrung outside to darken up the osage. I have been putting it out in the sunlight for a couple of hours at a time but was wondering if i could leave it out all day.

Thanks

SO long as someone doesn't steal it or it rains, it should be fine. Just remember to flip it over once and while to get it even.

Thanks vermonster13 im not worried about it getting stolen so i think i will hang it on a bird feeder stand i have so it can move around a little bit. Man this bow was bright yellow when i got it and im new to trad archery so my first though was YIKES. I cant even begin to tell you how cool the wood is starting to look on this bow. It has copperhead limbs with osage and it sure looks cool.

Osage is a great wood. It gets so rich looking as it ages.

Don't worry Joe that osage will turn a beautyful honey color. The older it gets the richer it will look. And yes sunlight will aid the aging process.

I have a 15 years old recurve with Yew limbs and the colour is turned a beautyful orange just shooting it,for sure living it outside at the sunshine will speed the process, but I don't know if it ages also the fiberglass

Probably wouldn't hurt it unstrung but just to be safe I wouldn't leave it out in the hottest part of summer when it is close to 100 degrees.Right now should be fine but it will increase the chances of you forgetting it someday.

If you have tree rats in your area, I'd rather you let it age slowly rather than gnawed on.

just put it in the window sill and open the blinds.  Osage is the best with copperheads.

Cacciatore may be right, the UV's may damage the glass.  Just look at the gunwhales on older fiberglass boats and the cracks and deterioration in general.  Maybe, let time do it naturally as not to pre-age that beautiful bow.
