Just got a call from AdkKen that Chris[BowSpirit] shot a buck in the northern zone during the rifle season with the longbow. A friend of Kens was going up to help him get it out. He got it from the Medicine stand for those who know the area......I'm sure theres more to come from BowSpirit.....A job well done!!! ron w

Ken,put him back on....finish this tale!!!!
Cmon, I have to go to bed soon. Big day at work tomorrow. I'd hate to go in all red eyed and such, looks like I might have to since I'm glued to here! :banghead:
Just talked to Chris.....
He said to tell you guys..... KEEP YOUR PANTS ON!!! He's typing as fast as he can!!!!!!!!!! :biglaugh:
Alright boys, alright...
Things started out pretty interesting this week. Took two days off to do some serious deer hunting. Now, in these two days, I've seen turkeys and deer. I've shot at countless squirrels. Was even serenaded by a pack of coyotes. Yet, nothing on the meatpole.
Now, Ken and I have a truly special stand. It really is an amazing place. It's also smack-dabe in the middle of a typical northern zone gun season. I've been told time and time again how impossible it is to take a deer; heck, a buck (anterless aren't legal up north during rifle). So let's see...highly pressured deer, antler restrictions; that occursed blaze orange wrapped around me. A hike up a mountain vs a nice level field. What's a bowhunter to do?
Ten minutes after this pondery, I was relishing the burn as my legs took that mountain for all it had...
Where is Killy when we need a verbal smack down? :biglaugh:
Im glued to this post.
uh huh! And?
Anyone wanna guess which tradgang mod I wanna be when I grow up??? :goldtooth:
Now, I wasn't smart, I wasn't psychic. Just a good ol' boy who loves breath-taking views and the most beautiful scenery in the north. Besides, seven years have taught me that you can't kill a deer with a bow anyway. So, where's the harm?
Of course, I also like a little action on my plate. So after a few hours of nothing straight, I was getting ready to call it quits. But by god, what kind of example is that? For my friends, for my family? Heck, for TradGang? So by God, I was going to sit there until dark or I saw a deer.
Imagine my surprise when I heard brush being crush underfoot, not 100 yards from the stand...
This would be killin' me if I already didn't know the whole story..... ;)
And then...?
Alright Chris way to go. I should just sign off and read the whole story in a few days when your done telling it. Congrats. Skippy
Yeah, well, once I start I just can't stop. Don't know how Mr. Lamb does it...
Anyway, 100 yards out, two does burst from cover. They were panting, too, like they'd been running for a while. Now, I may have the deer hunting sense god gave paste, but even I knew that that's when you sit still. For the love of god, think TREE!!!
Of course, that planning allowed for them to run to the left of the stand, certainly down the mountain and out of my life forever. Yet, my spirits weren't to be dashed, for 2 more does appeared from the same spot to take there place. Also running, and also headed to the left. Alas, they, too, soon left me.
But what on earth had been chasing them?
I'm going to bed, Chris PM me your phone # I'll get the story in the AM.
I'll help you quarter and clean the meat if you need it. In fact we can try out my new gambrel hook and pulley system in my garage. Let me know if you want help.
That's a fine offer, Charlie, and thank you. But I'm just going to have it processed.
I wasn't surprised when a forkhorned 6-point came out of the brush, same place as the doe. Of course, I had already run in with him earlier in the season. He'd offered me no shot before, so I was eager to return the favor. Yet, grim fate threatened to swallow him up like his "harem" should he continue on.
Sometimes, though, fate rewards us when we least expect it. For just as he began to disappear, the first two does came running up a game trail. Running right up to the stand.
One by one, the does passed my stand within twelve paces. And just as the last one was coming up, the fork was closing the gap. Big-bodied and a true beauty among an already beautiful race, I wasn't about to give a second chance.
As his head passed behind a tree, Supertramp (my Montana longbow) came up like so many time before. And as he stopped, vitals exposed, a big white-fletched fir covered the distance between us. It had a perfect arc that I swear I'll remember forever...
Glad to be surrounded by family and friends...
and then..... ;)
Comon on Mom! Let him stay up and tell the rest!
Anyway, the windage on the shaft was perfect. But the elevation was high (does that alot this season; thought I had that fixed). Only by a bit, but I have never shot a deer before. I have this urge to aim for the mid-line of a deers vital area. I know it's the bottom third, but still.
Turned out the shot was high enough to spine him. The woodsman blew completely through both sides, and his back legs went down. He started to lash out and grab with his front legs, tearing down the hill. By thirty yards, I had another arrow away to finish the job. Of course, I was panicking a bit, and missed.
Now, normally, I would fall into such hysteria that'd this story could have gone down a bad path. But I didn't. Somehow, common sense and an overall calm feeling of needed responsiblity came over me. So, I got within as close a range of the animal as I could.
The first shot was vital, and I suppose I should have just waited to let him die like the books and bowhunter ed say. That doesn't fly with me, or at least, not then. Not that moment. So I muttered something to him. Not some new-age, showy, spiritual gesture. Just a promise that I intended to help him. So, I drew down, focused, and let fly. The arrow caught both lungs and his head arced back like a crane. One second...five seconds...ten, and it was done.
And then I took of down that mountain. 7 years of close calls and no shows, and I had no idea what to do now. I ran, and I ran, and I didn't stop till I was in my car...
Since you've all been so patient...

Congratulations. Very proud of you Chris! Well done.

My Heart is Glad Little Brother!!!!!!!!!!
The Great Spirit is pleased,You have done well!!!!!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!! :clapper:
CONGRATS brother! Great story!
Nice! I can remember my first deer blow for blow down to the smallest detail. I spined him also. First animal I had ever killed. I did the same thing you did. Ran all the way home and called my mentor. That was October 28, 1988. You won't forget it!
Well done,and good night!!!
Great job and great story.Congrats!
Yeah...I'm there too, Ron. Who knew dragging a buck down a mountain could be hard? 'Bout thought a few times that I was going to expire right next to him...
Anway guys, I know this isn't the Golden Globes, but there are alot of people to thank, and properly. So, I'm going to wait and see if this really is a dream, and tommarrow I intend to give thanks to those who have deserved it for sometime...
But before I go, anyone have a frame?

Great story, Congratulations again!
Great buck and awesome story young man! It sounds like you've earned this deer. Enjoy.
Awesome pal.Good story telling. If hes still hanging and you change your mind Ill be glad to butcher him with you.Its very easy and after youve done it once you can do it a milion times. That is a true accomplishment to kill a deer in the north country of NY with something like 2 1/2 deer per square mile, and with a longbow and wooden arrows even.Way to. :notworthy:
Congrats
Awesome Chris!
I'm am so proud! I am only saddend that I couldn't share it with you, but that's just my selfishness. I am delighted that you were able to share it with the rest of us and keeping the campfire lit!
Hope to see you this weekend.
Charlie
Excellent! I knew if I waited until the morning, the story would be told completely.
Im happy for you Chris, and Ken, both of ya did great!
Well done! :notworthy:
Great Story and a nice Adirondack Buck too. Awesome
YA done good Chris!
Got my first just outside of Childwold too many years ago to count now.
No matter how many follow, you'll remember this one forever!!
Congrats on a nice Adirondack buck!
Larry
Beautiful!!!! Don't need no sniper rifle, give the man a longbow and he get's it done! Congrats Chris, very well done!
Jim
:notworthy:
Give Chris a long bow and he can hit his mark at 100 yards.
Great shooter! I saw it myself!!
Good story and pictures. Thanks for sharing them. Glad it went so well. You are a patient man.
First off, guys...let me say that this still feels like a dream. It's unreal, and to say I'm stoked is a grevious understatement.
Thanks to those who offered to butcher him, and I would have taken you guys up on it, but I wanted him processed as quick as could be. There's a gentleman down the road from where it was taken who'll do it, so I figured that fit the bill.
Alright, I think of all the people who need to be thanked, Adkmountainken is right up there. For two years, this man has taken me under his wing. No, more than that, he opened up his stands and little piece of hunting heaven to me.
Now, I'm sure he'll say that it's public land, but no. No, the way that man is tied to it, that's his property up there. At least in my opinion. So Ken, my hat is off to you man. This thread wouldn't be up, nor my deer down, if it weren't for you. Thank you, bro.
To all of you here at TradGang; from Terry to the moderators (Dave, you've taken my shooting up a notch), to everyone one else here. Guys, I've been on TradGang since I was fifteen, and it's always been there. So, to everyone; every last one, I thank you. None of this would have happened without the 'Gang. So thank you, TradGang members, and thank you TradGang...
Aside from the Medicine Stand in the fall, it's my favorite place to be...
Congrats Chris.
A big woods buck with a bow is quite the acomplishment. We all knew you'd connect when the time was right.Perhaphs if you make it up to Dave's on a weekend we'll get to meet up.
Thanks Rich...once this deer returns to my possession, a trip to Vermont is right on the top of my list...

Exactly it Charlie, though not an easy drag by any stretch. Not only did he drop within 50 yards, but the blood trail wasn't anything difficult...at all. The gentleman who came up with me actually asked if I'd used a 12-gauge...and he shoots big mechanical heads...
way to go Chris , congrats Drew :notworthy:
its hard to put in to words how happy and proud i am of you brother! you deserve this deer more than anyone i know. you have worked hard for him, put your time in, payed your dues and walked the walk! that mountain eats up pretenders and egos. its takes a hard hunting man to make meat up there and to do it during rifle season with a longbow is icing on the cake. the ridge we hunt is absolutly beautiful and during early bow/muzzleloader season myself and a few friends are the ONLY ones who roam the ridges. when rifle opens it gets HEAVY pressure. to take that buck like you did from that ridge is one hellll of a feat bro!!!!!!!! i hope that ridge, day, deer and everything about that hunt stays with you FOREVER!
Great story!! Much congrats on your first, a well deserved prize. You guys enthusiasm and love of the outdoors can be felt and heard through the computer. I'm glad we didn't loose you on the drag ;) . We've all been there with natures on version of a stress test. A price worth paying every time. Congrats again Joe
here is a pic of the stand where Chris put it all together! it sits on a shelf between 2 ridges. bear tracks are scar the tree from many a climb. you can see through the bottom yet it is a very healty, LARGE beech tree hence the MEDICIENE STAND.

I would look good in that stand :bigsmyl:
i would say i'll put ya in it Jim but that stand now BELONGS to Chris, i have to ask permission!
Hey KILLER now that ya got a nice buck in the freezer lets go up to Carl's in the mornin and shoot Big Foot! me, you and Charlie, that ought to get it done!
Congrads! :notworthy: Good times and good things for my mountain brothers.
You look up patience in the dictionary and your picture is there .
Congrats on the deer, the first is always the hardest, more will follow .
Jack
I thought I was Bigfoot? Or is that only with the ghillie??? :bigsmyl:
Nah, Killer's going to sit this one out and devote some much needed time to family. Buuuuuut...I better see a picture of a short blood trail and a big ol' deer at the end of it next time I'm on. Good luck, Ken and Charlie. It's your turn now...
And thanks again, guys. Between Tradgang, my family, and getting to FINALLY punch a tag after 7 years of buying them, well, I'm still in awe...
Mr. Vic - That stand was put there for you around 4 seasons ago and never moved.
Great deer and awesome story.
Congrats chris great story and buck!!
Fantastic job Chris! Way to "endeavor to persevere"! I'm sure some of you old coots will get the reference!
Again, very proud of you Chris! Keep at it young man, it brings a life of adventure and happiness!
I leave you rapscallions to your own devices for a week or three, and look what ya go and do! :saywhat:
Chris, your story kept me glued to this time-suckin' machine for a good hour. I was right with you every crunch of the leaves. You did yourself proud, and I am sure that Ken is needing a bigger hat as well. The giving that has come from the both of you has brought a glow to my sometimes jaded heart, renews my faith in the spirit of Man.
I know that you are walking on air, as are the friends and family who have helped you to receive that magic gift of inclusion that comes from the universe, in the form of a deer.
Believe me now, when I say that you, in your part, have given the rest of us a glimpse of our own beginnings, fresh and new. Most folks want to know that what we do is worthwhile, and no stronger reinforcement of that exists than to see someone catch sight of it, love it, grab it and make it his own.
Thanks, buddy, for the gift of the story well told, for the honorable hunt, for the friendship. Proud to be in your company.
Killdeer :) :wavey:
I'm sorry, I believe that the request was for a "verbal dressing down."
Sometimes I can't do anything right.
Killdeer
Kathy where's your story :readit:
bout time you popped back in there sis! now whatchagot to say????????
Thought I just pretty much said it... :readit:
Killdeer :goldtooth:
Awww Killie, you're way with words is simply astounding. Something to really aspire to. Thank you...
Just picked him up tonight. Got home and put 99% of it in the freezer. The tenderloins, however, were salted, peppered, basted in garlic butter, grilled hot and pink, and served with a nice salad and some crusty, italian bread.
To you, TradGang. Without you, all of you, none of this would have been possible...
Now I'm hungry.
