Title: glass kids bow recipe
Post by: Scott F on November 12, 2009, 02:35:00 PM
I'd like to make my son a glass bow.  He has a couple wooden laminated bows that I built for him, but I want to make him a glass laminated bow.  He is the shooter in my avatar with one of the bows that I made for him.  This time I plan on making him a Hill-style straight limbed longbow, but I'd like it to be around 48 inches long.

To make it simple, it will only have two maple laminations in addition to the glass.

What are your suggestions for the thickest part of the limb?

Scott

Scott I made a few kids long bows back in the early ninties.  I found one of the old receipts.
I used .60 glass on the back and belly a .090 x .002 taper and a .030 parallel.

I ordered everything two inches wide and split it all down to inch wide with a utility knife. Unfortunately I did not write down the fisnished draw weight.  I built several along these lines for friends kids etc.  Hopefully I can find some additionsl info, if so I will post.  Hope that is helpful.

Thanks for the information.  I was going to try and only use parallel laminations but I guess I should go ahead and buy some tapers since I will probably need them when I make bows for myself.

Also, thanks for the tip on buying everything 2" wide but unfortunately I already ripped my lams down to 1.5"!

Scott I know you said longbow.  I have also built several 36" recurves, I used inch and one half glass and parallel lams.  Cut one piece of glass and one lam. into four eighteen inch sections.  Used a twelve inch riser, simple straight (no deflex) limbs with recurves.  The kids have not complained at all.

In fact I am finishing one up for my grandson now.

Jess,

What is the radius of your curves on this type of bow?
