Fellas, I need some help. I got me a darn nice new hybrid longbow that is 62" and pulls 56#@30". My average draw length is 29.5". The problem is it needs really heavy spined arrows. Only GoldTip 7595 (195grain tip and 32" length)and Heritage 350 (145 grain tip, 30") fly well. If I use wood shafts that are my favourite and that I need for tournament shooting I need at least a spine of 90#! All calculations I have done said that 75# should be enough. I even glued a 3/16" thick piece of leather under my sideplate but it did not help.
What may be the reason why this bow needs such stiff shafts?
My big problem is that I do not know where to purchase wood shafts with such a high spine.

well, you could use ipe and have extremely heavy arrows (1000-1300 grains), or shoot telephone poles

A little more info, how deep is the shelf cut before you added the leather? and how long do you cut your arrows BOP

Try a heavier point. Just too find out how they fly.

90 seems awful high, even with 145 points. I figured 70-75. 75-80 tops. How are you figuring spine?

Yup, does seem high. I had a couple bows that liked 20 and even one that liked 30#s over marked weighted. Than again if ya add 5#s for every inch over 28"s and than 15#s because it is a high performance bow that is 35#s and ya take 35 and 56 and that is 91#s so it may not be that far off the mark. Be leary of anyone telling ya they have a bunch of cedars over 90#s. Kelly(Arrows by Kelly) once told me you would have to go thru a 1000 shafts to get a dozen spined that high. I like wood also , but I have learned to love carbon as it is more durable and ya can make it look pretty as well. Shawn

I shoot tapered 95-100 pounder cedars out of my 60 at 30 inch hybrid longbow that I pull 32 1/2" so it's about 66 to 68 pounds at my draw and the arrows sometimes seem a bit weak. I think about 105-110 would be the ticket but good luck finding them. I always got them from Rogue River archery but I have not ordered any since it recently changed hands. Incidently, if you are wondering, I had to food the arrows to 34" to get a 33" BOP shaft.
Sometimes it sucks being a knuckle drager.

Laminated Birch will get you there. Shawn, sound like you calculate your tuning like I do. Never could gaet a bare shaft to fly right, just do the math and I am there every time.

Danny, you and I usually
get it right, I keep an eye on ya, don't ya know!! Dave I know a guy who used to get them from RR as well, than he got a spine tester and found they were all 15# or more less than they said, this only involved ones they said were 100-110# spine or above. Their others were on the money. Shawn

Thanks for the info so far. I cut my shafts 29" so my field tip is on the shelf but does not touch it because of the crowned form. The bow was cut 1/8" to center I believe. Heavier point would make them weaker not stiffer, right? What is the idea behind this? I use 125grain tips on my woodies and I do not know where to buy heavier parallel screw on tips.
@ Dave: Who is now operating the business of Rogue River archery?
May it be my shoting technique that demands heavy arrows? If so what do you guess I do wrong?

I doubt it is your shooting technique. Modern bows demand more spine that what the draw weight of the bow. All of my bows are 60# and I shoot 80 to 90 # spine from them just depends on the point weight. You are correct, adding weight to the front will weaken spine as will the length of the arrow. I draw 28 1/2" and cut my arrows to 29 1/2 for 80# spine shafts and 30 for the heavier spine. I shoot 160 gr points for the 80# and 200+gr for the 90#
As I said, Laminated birch will get the spine you need. Most arrow suppliers carry the lam birch. Maple would probably get you close also.

Wapiti Archery has taken over the Rogue River equipment. I've tried some of their "stumpers" and they definitely were stumpers. I had no complaint though as that was what they were billed to be. I've not tried their top tier stuff yet.

Danny thank you for being so generous! I live in Germany so I think shipping will cost you too much trouble. I have already tried lambirch but I found them too heavy for tournament shooting where the distances are becoming longer and longer. Just too much work for my brain too calculate the arrow arch on distances up to 60 yards :) I have found a source here in Germany that sells Northern Pine up to 95#. They will weigh about 650 grains which is my absolute upper limit. I think I will give them a try .
By the way: May it be my tab that causes this need for high spined shafts?

Nope, not the tab. I shoot one that looks the same as that one. It is the bow and its high level of performance. I bet Danny and I could shoot each others arrows off of our own bows as we have the exact same specs. although I am going lighter lately. Shawn
