Title: 2nd Trad Harvest - on the ground
Post by: Hooper on November 09, 2009, 01:57:00 PM
This has been my second year Trad hunting and the first year I have scored, shot my first last week a doe and Saturday morning my 2nd deer a 5pt,the first deer I have ever shot on the ground with the bow. I was walking to another treestand I have set on the side of a standing corn field for a mid day hunt at about 9:00am. As I was walking along the edge of the corn, almost to the corner that I have to go around don't I walk into 3 bucks chasing a doe in the corn. A spike, nice 8pt and a 5pt. Man, they where ripping through the standing corn right beside me,it was so loud, they came as close as maybe five rows in even though I could not see any of them yet. They would stop and start up again. I never seen deer do that before, it was quit a intense moment. Then I thought to myself, hay dumpy, nock a arrow, so I did. And then the doe,8pt and the spike all ran out of the corn in front of me except the 5pt. I guess if I was Berry Wensel that I could have pick one and shot it but no way am I even close to being that good. I just stood there and watch them run up and over the old railroad bed half in kind of shock of excitement and disappointment that I didn't get a shot. I did not even draw the bow back, it all happen so fast. After that I thought I better hurry up and get in my stand. As I was walking around the corner of the corn I hear a buck grunting his head off coming around the outside edge of the corn right towards me. Thank God I still had a arrow nocked. I came to full draw just as he came into view at about maybe 16 yards. That crazy deer came wheeling around the corner right at me, he didn't even see me standing there until I yelled 'hey!' at him. I looked at the rack for a split second ( I seen a tall spike ) as I was focusing on my spot for his turn at 8 yards I released and drilled him a little to early than I would of liked, but I knew I got the back of a lung and the liver. He ran right under a low apple tree and snapped my Gold Tip right in two. He had 11 1/4" of broadhead and shaft in him. He went up and over the railway bed and I found him in the ditch on the other side. My brother helped me drag out the deer and at the time he asked me if I was using my compound at the time could I have made that shot. And after thinking about it I said no way. No way did I have the time to look through a peep site and find the pin at that close a range and it happening all so fast. I got to tell you guy's something after the shot I shook like a leaf, that has not happen to me in about 20 years. I will for ever now be a Trad hunter and this winter all my wheelie bows are heading to ****.

Great Job and story. I hear ya about the pins and peeps, the longer I shoot a stickbow the more I appreciate the advantages of it.

Thats a great deer.  Quick target acquisition is one reason the trad bow is a superior weapon (in many ways) than a compound.

Great job Brian ! Isn't it the best. Your area looks like the area betwenn Mt Morris and Geneseo. I drive that way often.

You have a good eye Bob, your right. I was right on the river. I am very lucky because I was hunting with my brother who has the rights to hunt this land. If it wasn't for my brother I would not have got him. I am very thankful to him.
