Title: How far have you had to "tote" water?

Already been in the backcountry looking at areas that I was unable to explore as much as I could/wanted to during Elk season. Found a great wallow and a real nice area to pitch my backpack tent. My drinking water source will be downhill (mountain) 240 yards. Reading Herdbulls book he carries in a collapsable 5 gallon container. Going to do that instead of making  a trip every night  :pray:

I have had an instance where i packed in 5 miles at night to an area i had scouted a few months earlier and expected to be able to get water out of a small pond. The small amount of water left in the mud hole that was a pond was unfit for use. I had to go a half mile over some rugged terrain to get water, luckily i had a enough water bottles and a hydration pack that allowed me to carry a full days supply for drinking and cooking. After a few days of that though, it became easier to just move camp closer to water. Moral of the story is prepare for the unexpected because the unexpected usually happens. I now make camps near streams I know to flow even in dry times. I also try to scout in or near the season I will be hunting so as to have a better idea of conditions I will be facing.

In the Marine Corps we learned how to obtain water from other means. I always keep a trash bag with me you can put it over a bush with a rock in it and tie it around the trunk over night the condensation will puddle in the bottom of the bag.,This is only in case you ran out of water.But it works.

Butts,

There are some nice 2 gallon dromedary water bags that work great for that also and are not as heavy as the 5 gal tank when full.  Heck 240 yds is easy.  Looks like our camp in Alaska is going to be nearly 1/2 mile and 400 ft of elevation.

Half a mile is the furthest and I moved camp closer very shortly.  Last thing I want to do is waste time at the end of a day traipsing around to get water.

Had to carry about 2 gallons to get me thru for the day on Isla Mona.  That is to make it thru one day and carry that while hunting!  Heavy!

Longest day was something like 14 miles.
