Title: D-Shaped Longbow
Post by: Seb77 on November 08, 2009, 03:47:00 PM
Hi there,

I am looking for a great and FAST D Shaped Longbow (IFAA Rules).  What would be your suggestions?

Thanks!!

Seb

A nice heavy Howard Hill.  I'm shooting a 60# @ 29 Halfbreed and it seems to move the arrows downrange pretty quickly.

You might want to checkout Northern mist longbows, Steve makes a great hill style bow.

I have 2 Hill style bows by Dan Toelke, handshock is almost non-existant, they are smooth, forgiving, ridiculously quiet and I recently chronographed my 49# bow with a 540 gr. Sitka Spruce at 172 f.p.s. You can go to page 5 here and see pictures on a post: "new Toelke D bow w/pics". Dan's website is  www.montanabows.com (http://www.montanabows.com)

I've got to second the Mohawk! I love my Hill bow more but, I don't think it is as fast as my Mohawk was. Regret getting rid of it to this day.

If you are looking to shoot in IFAA competition, you'd better follow the prior winners... Fox Royal Crown. Most of the others mentioned are great hunting bows, but for pure tack driving all day accuracy in competition shooting weight there is a reason the big names use the Fox.

Border Griffon GL from Scotland. The "GL" stands for "glassless". The Griffon has carbon-lighter than glass yet more torsionally stiff. The speed rivals many recurves without being basically a recurve like so many hybrid "longbows" of today that wouldn't meet the rules criteria (or even look like longbows in my opinion). I understand the bow has won more European tourney's than any other. I have also heard great things about the Fox longbows as well.

My experience tells me a Dwyer or a Mohawk.  Pretty fast, real quiet and very forgiving.  Also, bioth bowyers are great folks to work with.

Best of luck with your search.

Bob.

I will second Marty's Apex Predator Cumberland.  Mine is 75# at 27" and shoots a 715 grn arrow about 160 ish fps and a 650 grn arrow about 175 fps.  Not too shabby for my shorter draw length.  Not quite as fast as my Hill but it definately shoots consistently where I look.

I think the Liberty English may be the best D-shaped longbow out there.  It has a mild reflex/deflex in the unbraced profile but strings up in a perfect D.  Really the best of both designs.  Makes for a stable, mostly shock free release.  I havent strung mine up in little while since I have been working with my Whisperstik recurve.

Is Allan Boice still making bows anymore?

without a doubt, for me it's a  mohawk longbow (http://www.mohawkbows.com)  all the way.

this mild r/d is 'D" braced ifaa legal longbow has all the right features built in at no added 'options' cost.

this is one of the reasons I have a Toelke "D" on order,  we all know that speed aint everything, but everyone ive talkd to that has shot a Toelke "D" really likes it,   and for a "D" they are fast!

I've been going through the same dilemma and decided on a Northern Mist Superior. I talked to several bowyers including Steve at NM, Ron at Fox, Jim Martin at Mahantango, Dan at Montana Bows, and Vince at Mohawk, and they're all awesome to deal with and very helpful. I chose the NM because they seem to produce great speeds for the design, they have the look I'm going for, and from what I've read they're really sweet shooters. I came really close to ordering a Mohawk and a Fox. The only thing that made me go NM over fox was a slightly shorter wait time. You may want to call Ron at Fox, he'll be able to help you out if you're interested in one of the "Crown" bows. He may even have a few in stock  ;)

How about a Belcher Union Jack?  Has anyone shot one?

I shot one (Belcher Union Jack) a couple of years ago at the Ohio Deer and Turkey Expo and liked it very much. As I recall, it shoots very much like my Hill.

You may have to phone or e-mail Ron for information. It doesn't look like his website has been touched since 2007.

He does build a very nice bow.
Good luck with the search.

The Fox Royal Crown is NOT a true D shape and not legal for competition, but it is an outstanding shooter and worthy of another look.

However, the Fox Triple Crown is a true D shape and IS legal.

I realize it's only a name, but did not want anyone buying the "wrong" bow.

Liberty Enlish, I just shot one and it shoots right where you look, clean lines, and spits an arrow out pretty quick....

I've got to throw Bama Bows into the mix. Nathanael makes a light, sweet-shooting, D-style longbow. I admit that I do not know much about IFAA though.

I'm new to the longbow crowd, so I haven't shot a longbow other than my Mohawk, and she sure shoots smooth and quiet and looks good to the eyes. Can't go wrong, when you get a Mohawk, it's a great package deal. Great bow, bowyer, quality, price.
