Title: bear grizzly recurve..pics added
Post by: erierik on November 07, 2009, 07:28:00 PM
Just wanted to say hello, and tell a little about myself,I am new to recurve hunting and really enjoy it.I am a longtime duck hunter and walleye fisherman located 15 or so miles south of lake erie.I shot a deer with a compound about 20 years ago and drifted away from bowhunting.About 15 years ago I pulled a Bear Grizzly recurve out of a garbage can by the road.I put it up in my garage and it sat there for years.Had it strung this past summer and it shoots beautiful. Can anyone tell me about this bow?The numbers on it are FJ053,62",53#,L  I know what the 53 means. It has leather grip and a copper colored bear coin.I thought maybe the L mean't left handed but its not,it is a right handed bow.Blondeish colored wood. some darkerwood also. and cream colored and dark colored fiberglass laminations. This is my first year hunting with a recurve and I am really enjoying it.Maybe I should hang it in my den and buy a newer one but it shoots so nice I am using it at least for this year.Havnt shot at a deer yet but maybe soon..Great site thanks...

Congrats and welcome!!

I dream of the day of driving down the road and finding a Grizzly in a trash can.

I would love to see a picture. Others here can probbably tell you based on the info provided but in my case I just need a little more.

The leather grip indicates it might be from the late 50's era but again I can't be sure.

Great score and if it is a 50's era Grizz they are super shooters.

It was one of those cleanup days where everyone puts there junk by the road..at the time I didn't think much about it,but when I really looked at it I was excited.I know Fred Bear was an icon his recurves were great..I will take some pics tomorrow and post..

Pics will be great and really help with the ID.  Being 62", it may be a 59-62 model, some of the best ever made.  Congrats on your find; you are lucky and blessed.

without pictures it is hard to tell for sure, but as far as I know copper coins were only in the '59 and early '60s. Brass coins '63-'70. the leather grip was discontinued in '64 so without knowing specific color of the glass or type of wood in window I would say it is possibly a '59 (one of the most sought after Grizzlys) being 62"......What a find !!

A "dogleg" would be a Kodiak though.....Kodiaks didn't have leather grips after '61

A very nice '59. At 53# it's a good collectable weight too! I have a couple of them and preferr to shoot them over any of my other bows.

I live just an hour south of you near the crossroads of 44 and 619. There's a great club about 20 minutes from you, Geauge Bowmen. Bowmofo on this site is the Prez and a great guy.

If ever you need anything, feel free to pm me.
