I went back down to hunt for a couple of weeks in October. Camera crapped out mid-hunt, so this is the only picture I have. I ended up with this small buck, a doe, and a turkey. It was great to get back and hunt with the guys.

And here's one of my buddy's camp in Bath Co.

Yep George, that's a right nice trout stream. At the base of the hill across the road, National Forest land starts. We've arrowed deer right across the road, within 100yds of the cabin. Not to mention a severe infestation of limb bacon in the area.

Wow that really is beautiful. Ive seen the most der out of all my seasons in VA this year just never have the right shot opertunity. We do most of our hunting on private land in Appomattox but we also hunt Raggid Island, Chikahomony, and cavalier when it opens to the public in early December.
And A.S. thanks for the info ill check that out.

Always,
I hunted 12 days for those 3 shots. I saw deer every day, but like you, didn't have a legitimate shot on most. One thing I do  is set up in tight, thick bottlenecks. Unlike up here in Maine, down there you can see a good long ways in the woods. So can the deer, IMO. I try to find old fence rows, a brushy neck between feeding and bedding areas, anything that will funnel the deer in and make them give me the most shot opportunities possible. I set each spot up with two stands, to cover the winds changing, then stick to them. I went back in the next morning to retrieve the arrow on the little buck and spooked two does standing in the exact same place I shot him. This spot has given me and my friends over 20 deer in the past 10 years. Do your homework, stick with it, and you'll put one on the ground.

Good luck!!

Like Kevin, saw deer each time I went out (with work, that was only a total of 3 times this year).  I kept seeing activity / movement over "that away"...so, next time out...(Nov 05, at 6:49 a.m.) this was the result.  (8 point.. 18 yards, photo taken with a cell phone camera!)

I couldnt find the va forum, so I will post one here, it is my first trad harvest, and my largest whittail to date. I have never scored him, I could care less, he was a mature deer that I stalked to 28 yds, and made a perfect shot on. I shoot instinctive and use a Hoyt Gamemaster 45#@28" and shoots 51#@ 30" which is my draw. I used a beman ics hunter 32" with 50g brass inserts and 125g rothar snuffers with a finished arrow weight of around 475g.

Good gravy Forest! Bravo!!

For me, I just wanted some meat (Yup, I'm hungry) and some antlers that I can make businss card holders out of.

Heck Forest, I could make tri-fold business brochure holders out of those antlers.    :)

Mr. Bartholomew, that is a fine animal that you harvested!! It would not walk buy my stand with out testing his fate! I bet he is delicious! I just harvested a spike with my 66 bear kodiak hunter, its a 40# bow so I limit my range to 20 yds and he was every bit the trophy to me that the big boy was albeit for different reasons!
