Anyone here made a home made ghillie, something that is bow friendly and has held up decent?
Thinking about doing it and wondering about design pitfalls I may want to avoid.

I tried it once but the amount of time you spend on it you can work a couple of hours overtime and buy one.It's way easier to buy the kit if you want a do-it yourself ghillie.
ive never made a ghillie suit but i have made a ghillie net, so sorry i cant realy help you by telling you about the longevity of the suit but the net lasted along time and im pretty sure its still one piece (its at my friends place). i can tell you some tricks to tying the burlap and that for a 6'x8' net it took like 6 hours for us to make and it is very tedious. just let me know if you want the advice or any other imput,maby you could do a build along on the suit and post it somewhere here

yeah those work but you have gotta remember that the coloring on the store bought ones is never right and they are kind of cheap unless you buy a really expensive one
Recently purchased a Rancho Safari Guilli on this site. I'm impressed with the way it is put together. I'd rather spend my time shooting and hunting then tackle that project. For those that do, more power to ya, but for me, I'll buy mine ready made. :archer:
I bought a kit recently and am just finishing it up. The directions said it will take just over six hours tying something like 2900 knots at 8 knots per minute.
Maybe working in a sweatshop! I feel bad if they have productivity standards at their factory.
Either that or my math is off because I have about 15-20 hours into it and still have to finish the hood.
Pros-Can pick your own colors, make it the size you want, design your own camo schemes and the satisfaction of knowing you made it yourself. Someone says hey thats cool you can tell them yeah I made it. Cheaper than buying one.
Cons-amount of time to build. Not hard to do at all just time consuming. Price
I made my own this past summer. I was doing my clinical rotations in a hospital, and i was required to wear a long white labcoat that hung to my knees.
After I was done with it, I died it dark green, sewed camo netting to it, then tied pieces of jute twine to it. For color, I hit it with camo spray paint. I like that I can change the color like that to correspond with the terrain an the seasons.
I've worn it several times so far, and I am pleased with it, however, I know that the labcoat material isn't very durable, so I dont wear it walking or stalking much. Rather I just put it on and sit in my blind or bury myself up in some scrub.
With the price of the labcoat, surplus netting and twine, I think I may have $30 wrapped up in it.
We made our own Ghillies in the Marines out of an old set of utillties.(BDU's for you Army folks)
Take a thin bladed sharp knife and "pinch an inch" of cloth,then poke the knife blade through. Run your twine through the 2 holes and tie a "granny knot" (the opposite of a "square knot") You can run 2 or 3 pieces of twine through at a time if you wish. To make it "Bowhunter Friendly" just don't put any twine on the inside of your bow arm from the elbow down. When your all done,run it through the washing machine a couple times and let it get good and tangled. You can start out "thin" then add more twine as time goes on. (like between now and next Hunting Season)
I just made one. I bought a basketball net and tied on strands I pulled from a big burlap sack. I tied in bundles of synthetic camo yarn I bought at Walmart. I made a head piece out of a green bug bug net that slips over my hunting hat. I throw the net over my shoulders like a cape, put on the head piece and it really works! Took a lot of work to make.
