Hey all,
What do you all use to carry your water when you're hunting? I would rather not use one of the CamelBack type things if possible.
I have been looking at the metal type water bottles but cannot find anything to carry them on a belt.
Any ideas? What do you all do?
Nalajr
metal is a bad thing. Ask anyone that was in southeast asia on holiday back in the "60s and 70s what it sounds like when water moves in a half empty cantene.
That being said, I use a plastic 24 oz bottle or two when carrying a pack.
If you get good quality they will last you a lifetime.
Mike
Colemans military surplus you can get a plastic canteen and a canteen cover very cheap.
Why don't you like the bladders? That's all I use. They are a light weight container and will conform to your pack. Some of the newer ones don't make the water taste like plastic either. I bring a small filtration system and can fill up anytime during the hunt.
I like a bota bag. They are quiet and they reduce in size as the water is used.
John
I use a plastic bottle I bought at the hiking/climbing supple store. Some kind of bullet proof material..lexan maybe? Works well and is very durable.
Amen to what was said about the metal canteens.
Ed
Nala, I use these here.

Standard plastic sports water bottle..but the pouch is great. It clips onto my pack straps with the buddy lock system...but it also has a wide strap down the back that will fasten around my belt(velcro)
Low cost, simple, and effective.
Only dislike I have is that it only has a snap close lid. Its never been a problem for me...but would prefer a lid that closes more securely...something with threads maybe.
I use a gatorade bottle.
VTer..now that you mention it, Ill bet one of the smaller gatorade bottles would fit Perfectly in the Fieldline pouch.
Theres the screw cap lid I was looking for!
You can also get the gatorade with the squeeze top lid.
A few years ago there was a product called a "Flexiflask" which was a laminated plastic flask with a neoprene pouch. It held about 1 liter. I had one but like a dummy I left it in my truck with water in it during some really cold weather and it bust. The company went out of business, but I found a "1/2 Liter Platypus" flask at Campmor that's pretty much the same thing and fits in my neoprene pouch. They're about $7.The good thing is they're flexible so you can loosen the top a little and squeeze the air out and you have a quiet no sloshing water bottle. You could make your own pouch out of neoprene or something.

Leftover 16oz Sprite bottle....same one for the last 6 years...yeah...I'm cheap.

Hey Wingnut they must know your right because they are plastic now.
me to... 20 oz Mt. Dew bottle...
I like the platypuss water containers. They are cheap, don't make the water taste, can be froze, can be filled with very hot water, come in a couple sizes. And most important they collapes as you use the water, if you keep the air bubble out they are silent.
The pop lid is easy to use with one hand. My original one is going on 6 years old now. The small ones fit nicely in my packs side pockets.
If I take water with me,(actualy most times I don't) I usualy just throw a small bottle of spring water in my fanny pack.
Guess I'm lucky living on the west coast. I just find the nearest stream.

Mil surplus green plastic canteen with pouch and shoulder strap.
Speaking of which, they have a port in the top of the lid that looks like it's for a tube like a camelback has. Anybody know if that's what it's for? Where to get the tube?
The port is for consuming water from a tube on a mask which protects from chemical gas and agents. It has a custom tube which plugs in. I am not aware they have a cambelback adapter. I left the army in 1997 and the camelback was not around to my knowledge back then. Even if it was they didn't adapt to the canteen.
I read this a while back haven't tried it yet but sounds good. For those of you that don't like the sloshing around of a half empty container try this. Get some new unused plastic pot scrubbers and stuff them in the water bottle. They act like baffles to keep the water from sloshing. John
Just checked out the platypus bottles. Those are just what I've been looking for. Will have a couple for my pack by next week. Thanks RoughCountry!!
Mike
Plastic GI canteen,or Air Force plastic pilots flask. The flask fits in your back pocket and hold enough for lunch. If I take the flask I carry 2!!I do have a pack thats hydration capeable but I don't need that much water most times.
Since this year was the
"use what you have first and not buy anything new"
approach and since in Colorado its easy to use 60+ oz of water in a day if you are active I carried two 34 oz nalgene big mouths. I bury them in my pack so the sloshing is muffled rather than have them on the outside. One is straight water the other diluted 50% sports drink or juice.
Joshua
Your more than welcome Mike.
A tip that I do, in the warmer weather I keep a few of the larger size in the freezer ( fill 3/4 full and freeze) I pull one out and top it off with water and go. Usally this keeps you in cold water most of the hunt.
camelbak striker xt with 2 liter hydration reservoir.
finally bought a pack / remington at wall mart / best dang thing ever has 2 water bottles

That is so you can hook up the tube and drink when you are wearing your gas mask.
I use a "Stainless Steel WaterBottle" 'As Seen On TV',(but Purchased at Walgreens  ) with the Cap that Screws on, and has a 'Doo-Hickey' to hang it from a D-Ring.....thats not the Right word, the Ones the Rock Climbers use. I Insulated with 2 Can "Huggies" or "Koozies" cut to Fit and wrapped it all in Black Duct Tape! Nothing too flashy,I thought about covering the Duct tape with Camo Tape!! :archer:
I use the CamelBak Better Bottle. You can drink from it without tipping it kinda like drinking from a straw. Just flip out the spout, bite down on the tip and take a drink. It's also spillproof. Works great.

I use the empty pancake syrup bottle , and you can still taste syrup for days after , don"t laugh it works
Camelback backed up by a few 1 liter platypus bottles. I love the Camelback as I tend to keep hydrated more than ever before. Being hydrated really makes a difference at the end of the day and especially after several days hard hunting.
I love the platypus bottles. I have the 1/2 liter bottle and a larger one with tube.
Bota when it's not freezing out and Army canteen when it is. I've had two botas freeze up (mostly) and dump ice cold water all over my hands when hunting in freezing weather.
I'm not such a big fan of that.
