Title: Wood Combinations for a New Bow
Post by: tntsl on November 02, 2009, 11:39:00 PM
So I plan to order a new one-piece recurve in the next month or two and I've been thinking about what woods to use in the bow.  I've more or less settled on the idea of a bow with woods commonly found in the continental USA.

I was thinking I'd go with three woods, one  common to the eastern US, one common to central US and one common to the western US.  I'm leaning towards Hickory (eastern US) and Osage (central US) in the riser and Pacific Yew (western US) in the limbs.

How do you think those woods would look together?  What other woods would people recommend to represent the three areas of the continental USA?  What other combinations can you think of?

I like the combo of Yew and Osage and have built a few bows with it.  I'd find a darker wood to instead of the Hickory though.  The riser will be Yellow and white.

Walnut is a nice looking wood that goes very well with osage and strong enuf in a riser when laminated.

I like wood that stays together when glued 8^).

Well, actually I like osage with elm limbs.  I'm not a big fan of gaudy limbs and would want something stained dark or just have black glass.
Red elm makes a nice limb that blends well under satin finish clear glass.

Second on the Red Elm, a very grainy good looking choice. Not sure which part of the country most of it comes from but worth a look.

The Slippery Elm,  Ulmus rubra[2] is a species of elm native to eastern North America (from southeast North Dakota, east to southern Quebec, south to northernmost Florida, and west to eastern Texas). It is similar to American Elm in general appearance, but more closely related to the European Wych Elm, which has a very similar flower structure. Other common names include Red Elm, Gray Elm, Soft Elm, Moose Elm and Indian Elm.

Maybe Red Elm on the limbs with osage and desert ironwood in the riser. The yellow from the osage would contrast well to start and as the color changes I think it would still look nice with the red elm and ironwood.

Walnut and Osage are great together. Check out the Bowyers forum and Bjansen's newest creation. Osage and and grey action Maple, sweet looker!

I also like the looks of red cedar. Good shootin, Steve

Just what I was thinking.  Many folks don't know it but the desert ironwood is pretty amazing stuff.  Looks of cocobola but with incredible density and a mass weight that would be great in a riser.

I searched under Osage and Walnut and found a few pics of that combination.  I really like that combination in the riser.  So now I'm thinking an Osage riser with Black Walnut overlays and accents and tigerstripe maple limb veneers stained dark to match the walnut.  I imagine that would be a very nice combo.
